Byzantine units
edit... that Byzantine units varied depending on the fertility of the land being measured?
- ALT1:
... that the medieval Venetians, Pisans, and Genovese extracted concessions to avoid using Byzantine units when trading in Constantinople? - ALT2:
... that the emperors sometimes lengthened Byzantine units of measurement as a form of tax relief? - Reviewed:

- It's kind of rough going for (essentially) a list page, but you've got a pretty good ear for this kind of thing if you don't mind clicking over and seeing if there's anything that would work better hookwise. I actually ended up trying to clean up the mess at mile and yard from working on this page but I've got some Dumbarton Oaks papers I can use to add some more material later if you don't see anything. — LlywelynII 14:54, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks for the compliment. I've only just glanced at it, but when I got back I may be able to make something of the empress-bust-weight. EEng (talk) 16:26, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
- Hmmmm... this isn't easy because all these weird-sounding words gum up the wordplay. How about:
- ALT3 ... that some Byzantine steelyards employed bronze empresses?
- EEng (talk) 00:48, 15 April 2015 (UTC)
- Nice, @EEng:, but the "empress" expression only appears in a caption, and is unsourced. Yoninah (talk) 15:38, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- On mobile for a while but if you try steelyard empress (sounds like a rock band) in Gbooks there are plenty of sources that could be used. No reason hook can't come from a caption. EEng (talk) 15:49, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
- Of course a hook that comes from a caption is fine. @LlywelynII: can you supply a source for the "bronze empresses" description? Yoninah (talk) 19:08, 16 May 2015 (UTC)
