  • Long enough, new enough, copyvio ok, character count of hook ok. It was her students who discovered the planet. Also, notably it was discovered by a relatively small telescope. Hook should give credibility to her team/students. I noticed that article is written by a student of the university(+paid). However, it appears neutral and therefore ok. I query notability. Can another reviewer advise please? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Whispyhistory (talkcontribs) 20:36, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

I am going to reject this one as apart from the concerns about the hook and the author possibly having a COI, I am not convinced that the subject is notable. I won't AFD it but someone else might. Philafrenzy (talk) 15:03, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

  • (ec) Comment. @Whispyhistory and Skyes(BYU): The fact of having led undergraduate students to discover a planet, and getting media coverage[2] of that seems to me to (just) meet WP:GNG. In other circumstances I would approve the nomination, esp since if Stephens was a footballer her notability would be automatic per WP:NFOOTY; it is a point of extreme systemic bias that a footballer is deemed automatically notable if they make one very brief appearance for a professional team, while WP:NPROF denies automatic notability even to a tenured professional academic with a notable discovery to her credit.
However, I am wary of using DYK as a vehicle for paid promotion of marginally notable people. Congrats to Skyes(BYU) for writing the article; if anyone AFDed it, I'd oppose deletion. But I'd want notability to be less marginal before approving a paid promotion, esp when the newspaper which published the relevant article is owned by the organisation which owns the university. It's all a bit too cosy for my liking. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:16, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
  • Notability is an issue for AfD, not DYK. Article is within policy, therefore the nomination should be approved. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 22:18, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
  • Agreed. If you think it isn't notable, start an AfD. Otherwise, no policy based reason to reject this hook. Joseph2302 (talk) 22:40, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
  • noting this comment made elsewhere by User:PaleCloudedWhite: Has anyone not noticed that the source given for the hook doesn't support the wording of the hook? The hook states "that Denise Stephens discovered a planet larger than Jupiter?", whereas the Salt Lake Tribune article being used as a cite states that the planet was discovered by three of Stephens' former undergraduates. • Comment:Note the article has been nominated for Deletion Here .Hence suggest closing this till the end of that discussion.Pharaoh of the Wizards (talk) 22:18, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
  • Closing and reopening this is a pain. Just leave it open, but it can't be accepted til send of AfD. And if it's deleted then close the DYK. Joseph2302 (talk) 10:48, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
  • Per DYK rules, nominations are held open while an AfD is in process. When it closes, the nomination resumes if the article has been retained, and closed if it no longer exists as a article. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:13, 4 February 2018 (UTC)
  • ALT1: ... that Denise Stephens and her students discovered a planet larger than Jupiter? (She encouraged her students to participate in the project mentioned in the article.)--Ipigott (talk) 10:31, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
  • Reviewer needed now that article has survived AfD. Struck original hook due to concerns raised in initial review; ALT1 should be checked. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:33, 7 February 2018 (UTC)

The article is only about 1,200 characters of prose (presumably as part of the trim related to the AfD), which is not long enough. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:41, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
