Source: In July 1977, the museum was looted and several pieces of art were stolen. The heist was carried out by 15 year old Laurence McCall from Chester, Pennsylvania who would skip school and frequent the museum. The museum had limited security and McCall was able to steal paintings valued at the time at $450,000 by simply taking them off the wall and sliding them out of the museum's windows.

Ready for review- I struck ALT1 because it's obviously false, in spite of what the source says. For example, the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened over 40 years earlier. I removed the relevant text from the article, which was copied word-for-word from the source. Whoever reviews this, please carefully check for copyvios. MANdARAX • XAЯAbИAM 23:52, 1 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Mandarax: For the fact about the museum being the only one of the East Coast - that is taken from a reliable source. The Daily Times may not be The New York Times, but they are a newspaper with an editorial process which matches the criteria for WP:RS. It states "at one time", not "the first". In my reading of the Metropolitan Museum of Art page, there was a time when they were looking for a new space and that may be when the Deshong Art Museum was the only public art museum on the East Coast. I don't really care for the DYK since I feel the first hook is stronger, but I think it should be added back into the article. Thank you for catching the copyvio and for AGF. I had copied the language from the Alfred O. Deshong page which I had written when I was a less experienced editor. - The Met was just the first example that popped into my mind. From the page of the Wadsworth Atheneum (Hartford, Connecticut): "Founded in 1842 and opened in 1844, it is the oldest continually operating public art museum in the United States." There are other East Coast art museums that predate the Deshong, including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and probably others. I guess it's possible that these were all temporarily closed down at the same time while the Deshong was operational, but that's certainly unlikely, especially since the Atheneum claims to have been continuously operating. It would've helped if the Daily Times had specified when instead of just saying "at one time", and maybe they used some different interpretations of the terms "public" or "art gallery" or "East Coast", but I think the most likely answer is that they were just wrong.I agree: the first hook is by far the best. Another nomination that I am surprised took a month to be reviewed. The article was nominated within days of being created, it is long enough, and sources are cited. The original hook is just mind-blowing. I have some concerns, however. First, the source cited for the claim that the authorities could not prove that McCall stole the paintings appears to say no such thing. Secondly, if the authorities did indeed fail to prove that he did it, is it appropriate to state that he did? If McCall is still alive, is this a violation of WP:BLP? - @Surtsicna:Thank you for the review. Somehow one of the Philadelphia Inquirer articles was missed. I've added that reference back in and updated the language stating that he was convicted for stealing $300,000 worth of the art and served 3 years. Dwkaminski (talk) 19:00, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
Given the multiple issues (see WT:DYK#Deshong Art Museum this would require considerable work to become DYK eligible. RoySmith (talk) 23:37, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
