Poor Dionis

edit
  • ... that a rhyming passage from Mihai Eminescu's novel Poor Dionis proposes "that this world is merely dreamland and a cat's fantastic vision"? Source: Leon Levițchi's translation, in Garber (ed.), Romantic Irony, 2008, p. 196.
    • ALT1:... that Mihai Eminescu's novel of 1872, Poor Dionis, would be "illegible, were it not for the beauty of each passage"? Iorga, pp. 145–146: "Sărmanul Dionis [...] amestecă într'un chip care ar fi ilegibil fără frumusețea fiecărui pasagiu în parte și fără magia stilului elemente culese mai de pretutindeni" ("Sărmanul Dionis [...] pours in, in a manner that would be illegible, were it not for the beauty of each passage and its stylistic magic, elements picked up just about anywhere").
    • ALT2:... that readers who identified Mihai Eminescu with his character Dionis were surprised to discover that Eminescu was "stout and round-faced", "short-haired and dressed like any other"? ("Vlahuță, 8 years younger than [Eminescu], provides us with a very interesting sociological record of how Eminescu was seen by youth circa 1880. In secondary school, [...] he had conjured in his mind a romantic portrait of his beloved author, his face and appearance those of Dionis: young, slim, tall, pale-faced, wearing his hair long and curled, pacing about 'like a sleepwalker, as if floating'. [...] One day, as he and his friends were walking back from University, they hear this fella, from behind the Roman Gallery [...], 'Hey look, that's Eminescu!'. And so, Vlahuță writes: 'We all stopped to catch sight of him. A stout and round-faced, aging, man, short-haired and dressed like any other... there he is about to catch his trolley'.")
