Vanguard Cave
edit- ... that Vanguard Cave (pictured) is one of four caves in Gibraltar which have been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
- Comment: I know ... the hook doesnt tell you why they were nominated.

- alt *... that, this week, there is an international team digging inside the seaside Vanguard Cave in Gibraltar?
- Verified creation on August 24, 2012. The article is well beyond the necessary length, which is a plus. The sources look fine; there were some minor syntax errors in the parameters of the citation templates which I fixed. I did a little additional cleanup, as the prose is rather awkward at parts, but this is a DYK, not an FA, and they were minor issues. There's lots of interesting information on Neanderthal society in this cave. :)
- The one main issue I have with the article is that a map of Gibraltar appears at the beginning of the article with the caption "Map showing location of Vanguard Cave in Gibraltar", but as far as I can tell, no such location is actually labeled in the map (the article claims that Vanguard Cave "is located on the southeast face of the Rock of Gibraltar", but I couldn't find any such label in the southeast part of the map). It's okay if Vanguard Cave isn't actually labeled on the map, but the caption needs to describe/specify exactly where on the map the Cave is if it is not labeled. I'm content to pass this nomination, as it satisfies the DYK criteria, though I would like to see the map issue fixed.
- (Edit: Actually, the map isn't even an issue at all, as I was originally looking at the map image, rather than the map as it appears in the infobox template, wherein the location of the cave is marked via the coord parameter of the infobox, so yeah, things look good with the map.)
- Also, I would suggest the following hook, which is far more interesting than just saying that Vanguard Cave is nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as there are literally hundreds of such sites (moreover, the cave has only been nominated, not actually given that status), but this alternate hook indicates just why this particular potential World Heritage Site is so special:
- ... that Vanguard Cave is one of the last known habitations of the Neanderthals and indicates they had a varied diet ranging from red deer to bluefin tuna?
- Thanks for the review and copy edit. Unesco say that the cave is at "base of the eastern face of the Rock of Gibraltar." which is where I saw it. Ive changed the article to use that thought. There are more images coming from the archaeology team as soon as they have a break from digging in the cave. Victuallers (talk) 22:01, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
- I have also added a picture if one is useful Victuallers (talk) 22:27, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
