About this template
editThis template shows a timeline of states existing on the island of Ireland since 1171. It includes the Gaelic order for consistency given the overlap of this polity with the Lordship of Ireland and the first 50 years of the Kingdom of Ireland.
Some controversial entities are also included, such as Southern Ireland, the Irish Republic of 1798 and Free Derry. These entities at least nominally had the authority to govern, or represent autonomous areas of historical merit. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is included as it has authority to exercise government over a part of the island of Ireland. The European Union is not included since it is a supranational entity.
