Additional parameters

edit

Three events are related to this template:

  1. AfD closure, which places {{afd-mergefrom}} with 3 parameters
  2. Redirection, which triggers bot replacement of {{afd-mergefrom}}
  3. Copying of content, which may happen contemporaneously, later, or never

I propose that optional parameters be added to properly record (3). {{Copied}} is a relatively new template that provides attribution information for copied content. Flatscan (talk) 03:17, 4 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

How long should this template remain

edit

Does anyone know how long this template should remain on a talk page for following a AFD merger? In most cases its likely that such mergers will be of small amounts of information which can easily fit into the place of another article. Is there a need to keep the template on the talk page in such circumstances?, it seems excessive for what is basically just a redirect. BritishWatcher (talk) 19:13, 12 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

If content was copied from the redirected article to the other article, the redirect must be kept to provide attribution and cannot be deleted. This template is intended to note that the copying has occurred and lower the chances that the redirect will be deleted accidentally, similar to {{Copied}}. For more information, see WP:Merge and delete and Help talk:Merging#Best practice. If these tags are taking up too much space on a specific article, I can look into writing a combined or reduced size version. Flatscan (talk) 03:14, 14 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Combined template for multiple merges from other articles?

edit

Is there a template designed to include/list multiple instances of merges from other articles in this way, like {{Old XfD multi}} does for AfDs of the article itself? (That template can't be used for this purpose, since it only mentions the article it's on being nominated for deletion, not for another article being AfD-ed and merged into the current article.) Many D&D articles especially tend to have had multiple articles merged into them, so it gets a bit cluttered to have 4+ instances of the {{Merged-from}} or {{Afd-merged-from}} templates at the top. V2Blast (talk) 23:21, 10 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

One possible solution is use {{banner holder}}. Use {{Banner holder |collapsed=yes |text=Content from multiple pages has been merged into this article through the [[Articles for deletion]] process. |image=Mergefrom.svg |size=48 |1=, add the various {{Merged-from}} templates on separate lines below that, and then close the banner holder with }}. I just did this on Talk:Features of the Marvel Universe and while not perfect, I think it helps. —Carter (Tcr25) (talk) 14:37, 10 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

– These templates' names should have standardized hyphens, though I'm not sure what to standardize it to. I would personally recommend replacing all of them with spaces, but I'm not sure if there's a naming convention for hyphens. Additionally, while this is not a discussion for this venue, is there a reason at least the first two aren't merged? • Weak oppose: Template:Pam see also documentation gives a good view of what the current standardization is. It seems to be that talk page templates use "merged-from" (or to) with a hyphen, while article page templates use "merge from" (or to) without a hyphen. I don't think we need to change the status quo here – it gives a weak distinction, and standardization isn't necessarily helpful here. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 06:32, 1 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
