ESPN not supported

Removed because of unstable links per rationale at Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2012_June_16#Template:ESPN_NBA.—Bagumba (talk) 22:43, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

When this was done (at [1]), the espn support was not completely removed, such that a transclusion of:

{{Basketballstats|nba=blake_griffin|espn=3989/blake-griffin}}

resulted in:

"Career statistics and player information from NBA.com, or "

instead of

"Career statistics and player information from NBA.com"

Template:Basketball-reference

{{Basketball-reference}} is now deprecated, with this being its replacement. I have looked at all articles using {{basketball-reference}} and updated almost 400 articles to use this template, but there are still about 454 articles that use {{basketball-reference}}. These could not be updated automatically as they use the template without parameters. When no parameters are used the template automatically searches basketball-reference.com using the article title. Unfortunately this template does not include this functionality so, in its present state, it's necessary to modify each article individually, replacing {{basketball-reference}} with {{basketballstats|bbr=<id>}}. It might be prudent to add search functionality to this template so that remaining uses of {{basketball-reference}} can be replaced, as it's easier to modify one template, than it is to modify 454 individual articles. --AussieLegend (✉) 11:50, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your effort! Earlier consensus at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_National_Basketball_Association/Archive_19#External_links_template was not to support it. It simplifies the user interface with fewer options (and eases maintenance), not to mention there will be occasional problems when the article page name is ambiguous (e.g. Bobby Jones (basketball, born 1951) and Bobby Jones (basketball, born 1984) is in the title, the common name is not used on the , there are diacritics in the page name, etc). As for replacing {{Basketball-reference}}, there is already has a note on the template documentation that it is deprecated, and there is no deadline to get the remaining ones converted. Reenabling ESPN support

Support was removed in 2012 per Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_National_Basketball_Association/Archive_19#ESPN_NBA_bios. Sites like ESPN.com (and frankly even NBA.com) are notorious for changing their URLs and not redirecting the old ones. Mainaining them on WP ends up either being a time suck, or nothing is done and readers are left with deadlinks. Frankly, I think other sports are guilty of WP:LINKFARM with all the stats links they list. What would you argue is gained by adding ESPN links? Regards.—Bagumba (talk) 16:18, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

WNBA bbr

I think support should be added for WNBA basketball-reference.com links. It would be added using the same format as bbr but using the parameter wbbr. Will add in a few days if noone objects. --Trialpears (talk) 09:14, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

Support. Wonder if it's better to do a separate |wnbabbr= or continue to accept |bbr= with an optional boolean |wnba=yes. The links are pretty similar: /wnba/players/d/douglka01w.html, so in the presence of |wnba= it'd just be a case of adding on the extras. ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 09:22, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

They are very similar and that would certainly work, but I'm mostly concerned with ease of use here. Having to use two parameters seems less user friendly to me. This would only make sense if {{WNBA player}} were merged here as well. Add parameter to toggle bullet on/off

I was wondering if the option to display without a bullet could be added as a parameter to the template? I see that a majority of the template's use means that displaying it with a bullet makes sense (i.e. at the bottom of an individual player's page), but there are some uses (such as in 1977) where the bullet creates problems in a list of footnotes.

Bagumba: Sure; I'll start with detailing how it's currently in use on that page.

Under December births, specifically December 30, there is a bullet for "Kenyon Martin, American basketball player" which uses this template in <ref>...</ref> tags. The accompanying footnote displays in the article's "References" section as footnote 36, as of the time I compose this. For the sake of completion, the wiki markup and rendering look like:

My thinking is that a parameter could be added to this template that allows for the same text output, just without the initial line break and bullet, so that the template could be used in footnotes without taking up so much superfluous/empty space. The default value of the parameter would preserve the output with the bullet, for the many pages for which that is desirous.

However, this might be a "solution" in search of a problem! If there's an alternate source-specific template to use in this circumstance, or the specific footnote in question should simply be changed to use {{cite web}}, I'm happy with that as an outcome to this idle thought of mine. ––Peloneous(t)[c] 20:11, 15 September 2021 (UTC)

@Peloneous: This template was intended for use in the "External links" section, where items are bulleted. It was not designed for citations. Footnotes can be formatted instead with templates like {{cite basketball-reference}}, {{cite basketball-reference WNBA}} or the generic {{cite web}}.—Bagumba (talk) 01:18, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
