Something like:

COUNTRY entry from the CIA World Factbook

Since it is generally used in the External links sections like those other External link templates. 76.22.4.86 01:05, 24 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Notes on codes

edit

The CIA builds the Factbook around the FIPS 10-4 two letter codes; a list of these codes can found at List of FIPS country codes. However, there are a few codes used in the Factbook not at the above link. They are:

 • xx - World
 • xq - Arctic Ocean
 • zh - Atlantic Ocean
 • xo - Indian Ocean
 • kv - Kosovo
 • zn - Pacific Ocean
 • oo - Southern Ocean
 • um - United States Pacific Island Wildlife Refuges
 • ee - European Union

When using these codes on this page or in the link, the codes have to be lowercase or you will get a 404 error.

I hope this helps. - Thanks, Hoshie 13:05, 26 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

This template would much more useful if it dispensed with the codes. They're not common knowledge. SamEV (talk) 04:15, 12 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikify

edit

editprotected Please wikify The World Factbook in the generated code (similar to CongLinks). Flatterworld (talk) 05:02, 3 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Documentation request

edit

editprotected

Dear admins:

Can someone please add a Documentation tag to this template, to create an editable documentation page? I will write the documentation myself, it shouldn't take long. Also, move the categories onto the page. Thanks. --Eastlaw talk ⁄ contribs 23:54, 10 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Done. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:27, 11 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

 • geos/{{anchorencode:{}}}.html to geos/{{anchorencode:{{uc:{}}}}}.html

Done. --- RockMFR 21:31, 11 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

They've switched back to lower case... So please revert the last change. Thanks, Nevuer (talk) 11:57, 2 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

editprotected What Nevuer said above, country codes are lower case again so change:

 • geos/{{anchorencode:{{uc:{}}}}}.html back to geos/{{anchorencode:{}}}.html

Done, I think. Not watching this page, so hit me up on usertalk if there's an issue. Ciao,  Skomorokh  18:35, 7 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

accessdate

edit

Would adding accessdate field be appropriate? When used as a source it comes handy. --Muhandes (talk) 11:13, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

What Muhandes said. Can we have a field for that?—Chowbok 21:56, 24 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

  Already done I've updated the documentation. — JJMC89(T·C) 22:54, 24 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

URL Change

edit

The CIA World Factbook is now at https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/, and each country is listed by its name under the countries subdirectory (e.g., https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/switzerland/). — Preceding unsigned comment added by MasqueOfTheRedDeath (talkcontribs) 19:28, 17 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Each instance of the template has been replaced with this wikitext:

Belgium. The World Factbook. Central Intelligence Agency.
Belgium. The World Factbook. Central Intelligence Agency.

Some are dead links for example:

Belgium[dead link]. The World Factbook. Central Intelligence Agency.

..those will have archive URLs added. If someone really wants to have a template, they will need to rewrite this one then search/replace the above wikitext while also dealing with the dead link issues now and in the future. It is ultimately easier to maintain atomic URLs in the article rather than trying to deal with changing URL schemes in a top down template which failed in this case to live up to its promise of easy change, since the URL scheme changed the identifier, and some migrated to the new scheme and others didn't (dead links). -- GreenC 02:04, 25 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Greetings and felicitations. Would you please be so kind as to change "(Archived 2000 edition)" to "(Archived 2000 edition.)" (ideally with only the "Archived 2000 edition" as the link text)? That way it will match the rest of the citation's punctuation.—DocWatson42 (talk) 03:33, 9 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
