Shouldn't the _external_ link come first, like {imdb}, {gutenberg}, etc.?

Something like:

[https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/COUNTRY_CODE.html COUNTRY] entry from the [[CIA World Factbook]]

Notes on codes

The CIA builds the Factbook around the FIPS 10-4 two letter codes; a list of these codes can found at List of FIPS country codes. However, there are a few codes used in the Factbook not at the above link. They are:

• xx - World
• xq - Arctic Ocean
• zh - Atlantic Ocean
• xo - Indian Ocean
• kv - Kosovo
• zn - Pacific Ocean
• oo - Southern Ocean
• um - United States Pacific Island Wildlife Refuges
• ee - European Union

When using these codes on this page or in the link, the codes have to be lowercase or you will get a 404 error.

Contry Code ist now upper case

{{editprotected}} Country Code in CIA Factbook has changged from lower case to upper case a month ago. So please change:

• geos/{{anchorencode:{{{1|}}}}}.html to geos/{{anchorencode:{{uc:{{{1|}}}}}}}.html

URL Change

The CIA World Factbook is now at https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/, and each country is listed by its name under the countries subdirectory (e.g., https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/switzerland/). — Preceding unsigned comment added by MasqueOfTheRedDeath (talk • contribs) 19:28, 17 January 2021 (UTC)

Each instance of the template has been replaced with this wikitext:

[https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/countries/belgium/ Belgium]. ''[[The World Factbook]]''. [[Central Intelligence Agency]].

Some are dead links for example:

Belgium. The World Factbook. Central Intelligence Agency.

..those will have archive URLs added. If someone really wants to have a template, they will need to rewrite this one then search/replace the above wikitext while also dealing with the dead link issues now and in the future. It is ultimately easier to maintain atomic URLs in the article rather than trying to deal with changing URL schemes in a top down template which failed in this case to live up to its promise of easy change, since the URL scheme changed the identifier, and some migrated to the new scheme and others didn't (dead links). -- GreenC 02:04, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
