Still needs work
editThis is a version of the infobox from Wynn Las Vegas. It still needs work, like updating to only display entries when data is available for a file like in Template:Airline infobox. I tried to do this from the start and was not able to get it to work right so I went with a simple version to get this started. Vegaswikian 07:30, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
casino types
editThe inital list was:
- Land Based
- Riverboat
- Permanent Barge
I'd like to add add the following:
- Land-Resort
Vegaswikian 19:51, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
Adding "Land-Resort" is odd to me. For example, Beau Rivage in Biloxi is a permanent barge, but is marketed as a resort (spa, high-end restaurants, golf availability, marina). When I originally thought of that line item, the line was intended to describe the casino itself, regardless of whether it was attached/connected/associated with a hotel or resort. Rooms
editI think it would be in the best interest of a encyclopedia to change # to number. If anyone has any objections please talk here. --Ben 23:11, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
Changes
editI made a number of changes:
- Actually added the table - closing and opening tags, which replaced the previous, rather cumbersome, {{Infobox frame}} and {{end frame}} templates between this template. I thought it was ridiculous to have to use those - just add it into the main template that it is being used in!
- Added logo header. This was for the Ceasar Palace article, which had a logo that stuck out quite badly; it looks much better in the infobox.
- Added "Usage" header with an easy-to-copy bit so new users aren't intimidated by the mess of HTML. Added {{esoteric}} as well.
Thanks. Hbdragon88 04:00, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- The logo parameter is screwing up the infobox; see for example Bellagio (hotel and casino) and Paris Las Vegas. --Mathew5000 22:07, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- Yea, if missing it defaults to the code. This can be fixed, however I have problems with fixing this myself. I have tried for other templates without success, so someone else needs to do the fixing. I did fix the Paris page by moving the logo into the infobox. However after doing that, I'm not sure I like the way it looks. Vegaswikian 23:45, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I haven't looked at any other pages, but the Paris page looked better the other way. --Mathew5000 05:27, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
- There's something to make it optional, but I don't know how it is done. But we definitely need it for hte logo paramater. Hbdragon88 01:25, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
I just looked at the Paris page - perhaps the image should go before the logo? I like the logo in the infobox much better - I felt it was distracting to have the logo on the left and the infobox on the right. Hbdragon88 01:27, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
logo images
editMGM Grand doesn't have a logo image either. a broken link above the infobox is annoying. Janviermichelle 16:23, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
- Surely someone knows how to fix this. Vegaswikian 19:49, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
- Okay, I kind of fixed it...it has an "if" parameter now. The only problem is that there's a small white sapce if there's no logo there. Hbdragon88 00:52, 17 June 2006 (UTC)
Optional fields
editShould the following also be optional?:
- theme=
- image=
- rooms=
- date_opened=
- attractions=
- restaurants=
- renovations=
- names_pre=
Address
editThis needs to be removed ASAP, per WP:NOT#Wikipedia_is_not_an_indiscriminate_collection_of_information... i.e., this is not a travel guide. Leave that to WikiTravel. --Madchester 17:03, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
- Addresses are standard for facilities on this level, like location and such. Thewinchester (talk) 12:57, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
{{{casino}}}
for casino name
edit
I've added this element back in to the template, there seems to be an issue on some pages where the {{Infobox frame}} and {{End frame}} templates are used causing the title to be mis-placed and appear on the left of the page instead of on the right above the infobox. Not sure why. johnwalton (talk) 10:01, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Just to add, I've removed as many of the redundant {{Infobox frame}} and {{End frame}} as possible, though there are bound to be occurences I've missed. johnwalton (talk) 10:14, 30 August 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for the cleanup. I couldn't believe that the casino infobox was being supplamanted with two other templates...especially when the contents were as simple as {| and |}. Hbdragon88 00:23, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
Overhaul
editIt seems that this template has been dormant for quite some time and due for an overhaul into house style. I have just completed the template overhaul now, and am in the process of updating the underpinning documentation to go with it. Amongst the style improvements are newly included fields location, coordinates, architect, and footnotes section for references to go with the information within the infobox. If you have any questions, just drop me a line. Thewinchester (talk) 12:57, 21 December 2007 (UTC)
Suggested major overhaul
editI think that it is time to split out the hotel information from this template and to use {{Infobox hotel}} when the casino includs a hotel that is included in the article. At the same time we should consider adding a {{Infobox resort}} template that could serve as a unifying shell for the other templates. At some point it may be useful to also consider attaching {{Infobox convention center}} for those resorts or properties that have significant convention centers. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:59, 5 October 2008 (UTC)
- ay. Let's use the Venetian or Mandalay Bay as talking examples, since they cover all categories. Are you proposing that we remove the casino infobox from their articles, and replace it with a hotel infobox, a resort infobox, a casino infobox, and a convention center infobox? I think I support your suggestion, but just need your thoughts to be more clear for my own purposes. SpikeJones (talk) 00:23, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
- What I would like to see is a resort template that could include any of the other templates mentioned above, or maybe a new template that covers parts of the other templates and is included in both. For example, if we are going to include the address, it only needs to be displayed in the resort template and not the others. However any of the other needs to be able to be included in say a hotel article about something that is only a hotel. Or maybe only two if say there is hotel and conference center.
- Using Mandalay Bay, I'm not sure which direction I would go. Given that there are three hotels, would we use one hotel infobox or three for the resort? I'd argue three, but maybe some stripped down version with a full one if there is an article for the hotel. Your question makes it clear that this needs discussing so that a good solution is produced. Vegaswikian (talk) 05:58, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
- Well, let's start with the main one - what should be in the casino infobox? What *makes* a casino? SpikeJones (talk) 12:30, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
- Well today we have these entries:

- I made notes on what to do with these in a combined template. The blank ones would be included, and the others handled as noted.
- When the infobox was being constructed there was a discussion about listing the number of slots or table games. However these change all of the time and are generally not not disclosed and published by reliable sources. They may appear in some trade publications. Adding these could become a maintenance nightmare. Vegaswikian (talk) 17:00, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
test version of templates
editHere is a test of a template idea. Fell free to play with these to try different looks and update the source as necessary. One big thing missing at the start is including the sub templates in a master one like is done for airports. Vegaswikian (talk) 17:59, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Merging
editI think this could easily be merged wityh infobox hotel. Many casinos are on the groundfloor of hotels anyway. The parameters can be added to the hotel infobox in my view and this easily replaced. Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:48, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
- Not all casinos have hotels. A better result would be to develop the resort template which uses both to cover projects that are marketed as a resort offering one or more casinos and one or more hotels/condo hotels. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:01, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
- Actually I have proposed that the casino and hotel templates be merged into {{infobox building}}. Forgot that this thread was still here. Vegaswikian (talk) 21:34, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
Parking and public transit
edit@Zzyzx11: I don't believe these rows belong in the infobox. Wikipedia is not a travel guide. Toohool (talk) 23:48, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
- As I mentioned in the edit summary, it was merely a test -- importing two parameter rows, which are current found on Template:Infobox museum and Template:Infobox convention center. These "parking" and "public transit" rows are also found on Template:Infobox venue, Template:Infobox shopping mall, Template:Infobox park, and a few others. I just wanted to be bold and see how they would technically work here. As for whether they violate WP:NOTGUIDE, apparently there is no such consensus that they do, given the 5+ infobox templates I just cited. Zzyzx11 (talk) 00:26, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
- I don't see a consensus for adding these rows either. There's been little discussion that I see, other than some opposition to them at Template talk:Infobox venue#Addition of parameters and some lukewarm support at Template talk:Infobox shopping mall#Parking parameter. The public transit row is basically telling readers the most convenient way to reach their destination, it's not much different from including driving directions in an article. The parking row (which, from the linked discussions, is apparently meant to list the number of parking spaces) is an odd bit of trivia that I don't think is important enough to be in an infobox. Both parking and public transit are aspects that are not often mentioned in good casino articles, which I think is generally a good metric for whether something should be in an infobox. I also don't see why you refer to this as a "test", when you've gone ahead and added these rows in several casino articles, and there's nothing unusual about these rows that would appear to require testing. Toohool (talk) 20:16, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
- Is there a discussion or guideline on what a good casino article should consist of (WP:WIAGA is a general guideline, and there seems to be no Wikipedia:WikiProject casino)? Just because they have not been added yet to the article text does not necessarily mean it's a "good metric" -- it may be only because nobody has yet attempted to have been bold and added something to those casino articles like Madison Square Garden#Accessibility and transportation or Sun Life Stadium#Parking. The bold testing I did also includes going through several individual articles and attempting to fill them in. I will concede that, at least after adding the few that I have done, the public transit parameter will apparently only affect a handful of Vegas articles in proximity to the Las Vegas Monorail. Many casinos do not seem to be in close proximity to a public transit line. Zzyzx11 (talk) 22:48, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
- Why do you think these parameters should be added? The fact that you have added them to other infoboxes with little opposition is not a good reason. Infoboxes generally do not contain every possible piece of information, they only contain aspects that are found across many of the transcluding articles, so that this data can be quickly viewed and compared in a uniform format. Any well-developed casino article will include, for example, the date the casino opened, and any previous names that the casino has gone by, so these are good rows in the infobox. A well-developed casino article will probably not contain the name of the nearest train station or the number of parking spaces. I have read a majority of the casino articles in Wikipedia, and when I find such information, it's usually in the middle of stuff like opening hours, driving directions, and lists of restaurants, that are more promotional than informational, or are better suited for Wikivoyage. That's why I say that good casino articles don't contain this information. By the way, it's no coincidence that you found not many uses for the public transit param. Casinos, at least in the US, tend to be located in rural areas, because urban casinos often generate too much opposition from people who think they will lead to more drugs and crime (and many casinos are on Indian reservations, which of course were created on the most worthless land that could be found.) Additional parameters
editThis template is quite similar to Template:Infobox building. I would suggest merging this infobox into that one, or adding more parameters. For example, should the number slot machines and gaming tables be added? --Daylen (talk) 04:37, 24 September 2017 (UTC)
Mapframe maps?
edit{{Infobox building}} and {{Infobox shopping mall}} have both recently been updated to automatically show dynamic mapframe maps by default. I am proposing to similarly show such maps by default for this template, with the same optional parameters to adjust the size, frame center point, initial zoom level, and marker icon; and to similarly allow the mapframe map to be turned off using |mapframe=no
. See Template:Infobox building#Mapframe maps and Template talk:Infobox building#Change to the map parameter so Kartographer works for further information. (FYI: I'm making similar proposal for other buildings infobox templates) - Evad37 [talk] 15:35, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Add a demolition_date
parameter
edit
I propose to add a demolition_date
parameter just like in the {{Infobox building}}
template. Some of the casinos such as the New Frontier Hotel and Casino have been demolished. Abhiramakella (talk) 23:03, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
