Size and alignment issues

edit

I wish I'd thought of this instead of developing {{Related portals}}!

I noticed that the icons are all displayed at 120x70px, which will make "flag" icons much larger than before. I put together a "test cases" framework using Template:Related portals2/testcases, Template:Related portals2/sandbox and Template:Related portal item/sandbox to investigate this. I think 70x70px will give better results, eg at Portal:Africa.

But the test cases page shows that there are alignment issues when the portal icons have different aspect ratios. This shows up even in the current version with 120x70px icons, and more so when the icon size is reduced. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:12, 10 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Image licensing problem with current code

edit

With the current template code that uses {{Related portal item}}, the portal image links to the corresponding portal. While this is good for usability, when the icon image has a GFDL or CC license, we must link back to the Commons version to fulfill the attribution part of the license.

I've fixed this in the sandbox (see testcases), looking up the link in the Portal image database, but now the template output is less friendly. Given that this template produces links that are not license-compliant, we have to do something, but I wanted to open this for discussion before I made the change go live.

Comments? Suggestions? — hike395 (talk) 03:54, 5 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

I've come up with a better idea, which is to modify {{Portal bar}} to make larger icons and fonts. For example:

(The lines above are for illustration: they would not be in the template). This seems better than having very large unclickable icons above the Portal links. Any comments? — hike395 (talk) 05:28, 12 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
