Template talk:Rugby box
On 15 December 2022, it was proposed that this page be moved from Template:Rugbybox to Template:Rugby box. The result of the discussion was moved. |
Documentation
editI wonder if those in the know could produce a 'how to use' guideline for this page? Murkee 10:08, 27 March 2007 (UTC)
- I've produced something quickly for {{rugbybox2}} and marked this as tdeprecated. Hope that's okay. --StuartBrady (Talk) 12:34, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
Needs to change
editThis template is awkward to use, forcing the use of template names for the home=
and away=
input arguments. This has led to the proliferation of templates such as Template:WASPru (for example), which is far less clear than an inline link to London Wasps. Even stranger is the need for templates such as Template:ReverseLSF1ru, which merely emits the text string "Loser of semi-final one".
Therefore, I will update this template so that the embedded template transclusion is removed. Of course, I will update all the pages that transclude this template first, using template:rugbybox2 as a temporary replacement so that nothing breaks. Once the transition is complete, I will change back to the rugbybox
name. Andrwsc 19:55, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
What happened to attendance and referee?
editI noticed that the tags for attendance and referee were gone from the new version. Any way they might come back? — Dale Arnett 00:17, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
- The last edit says "made attendance and referee optional parameters", so they are still there, I think! —MC 01:33, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Change "home" and "away" to "team1" and "team2"
editPer {{footballbox}}, I believe that the "home" and "away" parameters should be changed to "team1" and "team2". This is because some matches are played at neutral venues, and therefore there is no home team or away team. Does anyone know how to do this without removing the functionality of the "home" and "away" parameters. – PeeJay 11:30, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- What utter nonsense. Whenever a match is played at a neutral venue, one team is assigned home status and the other away so this is clearly superfluous. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.150.211.99 (talk) 16:12, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
- How can a team be "assigned home status" at a neutral venue? One team is listed first, sure – I mean, one team has to be first, right? – but neither team is at home! – PeeJay 20:57, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
New fields added
editI added new fields into the template - all optional - for the other match officials. There is no reason not to have them included. For presentation it would be nice to see them moved to arrange across the bottom, but I will leave that up to discussion - and I fear I will mess it up more than improve it. SauliH (talk) 00:10, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
- There is a good reason not to include the other match officials, and that is the fact that they are not that important. They hardly make any actual decisions during the game, and even then the on-field referee has the authority to overrule them. They should only be mentioned in conjunction with the team line-ups as at 2007 Rugby World Cup Final. – PeeJay 00:22, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
- hmm... I will agree that the secondary officials are not as important, but they are crucial (at least the touch judges) to the operation of the game. I would debate your point that they hardly make decisions, the touch judges certainly do, and the referee relies on them to be his second and third set of eyes for infringements that take place out of his sight. But really it should not come down to whether we think they are important or not, they ARE a part of the match, and if we are going to the extent of writing about something as specific as a match, surely the officials overseeing that match are pertinent enough to merit stating as well. I can assent to including them with the players, but this then disjoins the referee from the remainder of the match personnel, which results in poorly organized information. I think the inclusion as fields along with the referee, resolves this disjunction, and presents it far more clearly. Their inclusion in the template does not obligate editors to use them, but instead allows for better presentation. That is the way I see it... SauliH (talk) 03:37, 3 September 2010 (UTC)
- It is true that a match cannot be played without a pair of touch judges, even at junior level, so in that sense you're right that they are "crucial". The TMO, however, is not an important official; he may make some high-profile decisions, but that's only because the decisions he is required to mull over are, by definition, contentious, and would likely draw media attention anyway. I'm not saying that we should omit the info altogether from articles about individual matches – in fact, I do think that the "secondary" officials should be mentioned in individual match articles, just not in the {{rugbybox}} template. After all, how often do you actually see in match reports who the touch judges or the TMO are? Like I said, if you look at the 2007 Rugby World Cup Final article, you'll see that those officials are all mentioned, and in an appropriate place. I was under the impression that this was the formula we were meant to be following for all rugby match summaries.
- Of course, there are articles that incorporate multiple {{rugbybox}} templates, such as 2009–10 Heineken Cup pool stage, and I don't think any of those should include the secondary officials. The trouble is that if you add the parameters to the template, even if you make them optional, you'll still get overzealous editors adding the secondary officials as and when they can. – PeeJay 10:04, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Collapsed format taking two lines
editDoes anyone know why the box takes two lines when collapsed? See:

optional weather data
edit- The news coverage of the 2019 rugby world cup have kept mentioning the sweltering heat and uncomfortable humidity of Japan. For example, Too hot to handle: Rugby World Cup players struggle with Japan's humidity by New Zealand's Stuff.co.nz, Inhumane heat equals torture on the lungs under the Misaki dome by the Irish Times, Georgian team practicing with a ball dunked in soapy water to help them get good grips with the hot, humid weather in Japan by the Fiji Sun, Humidity changes your approach, says South Africa's Erasmus by Rugby World Cup official news, and etc.
- I see an optional field of "weather" would be valuable to reflect the weather conditions as this raise so much of a concern across the sports world. In this respect, the date and location of the match is not as useful in reflecting the conditions of the match being played. If editors would not want to use the field, they could leave it empty. This optional field should be particularly useful for test matches or even world cup matches held in sub-tropical zones like Japan and the Pacific islands.
- Lovewhatyoudo (talk) 13:23, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
- If the weather conditions are so important, I suggest writing about them in a prose account of each match, not simply adding them to a pointless parameter in this template and asking the reader to decipher why the info has been put there. There is no doubt that much has been made of the conditions at the 2019 Rugby World Cup, but this template is supposed to summarise the important info for all matches, in any tournament, not just this one, and to add a parameter to this template smacks of recentism, which we should avoid. We need to write match reports, not just consign everything to a statistical summary. – PeeJay 14:22, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
- Also, I hasten to add, even if you say the parameter is optional, people will feel compelled to fill it in in all situations, regardless of the relevance of the info. For the most part, the weather is not a factor, so giving people the option to add weather info even where it's not required is a minefield we shouldn't be setting for ourselves. – PeeJay 15:13, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

Can we format the match events a bit better?
editRight now the match events look like this...
{{{date}}}
|
Cardiff Blues | 26–26 | Leicester Tigers |
---|---|---|
Try: Roberts 73' c James 74' c Con: Blair (2/2) Pen: Blair (2/2) 14', 33' Halfpenny 27', 35' |
Try: Hamilton 21' c G. Murphy 45' c Con: Dupuy (2/2) Pen: Dupuy (4/7) 24', 38', 54', 56' |
{{{stadium}}}
|
I'm not a fan of how the names and score types aren't aligned. Can we instead do something like...
{{{date}}}
|
Cardiff Blues | 26–26 | Leicester Tigers | ||||||||||||||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
|
{{{stadium}}}

I just made this on the fly, and honestly I'm not so sure now that I look at it. I think it's easier to read but the spacing kind of looks weird, especially on Blair's conversion. Is there some work that can be done on this or is it just better the existing way? Either way, I thought it was worth sharing what the alternative would look like. As a note, this would be able to be implemented with no additional features at all, and I'm sure someone with more experience than me with tables could do a better job than this mock-up. El Dubs (talk) 07:57, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
- You could align on the left rather than the right, so have the scores column (tries/cons/pens) as per, then have the scorers in the next column aligned left like a normal paragraph?Skeene88 (talk) 09:38, 30 July 2021 (UTC)
Created some optional custom width parameters
editHi there,
Hope people don't mind me being a bit bold. I created cw1, cw2, cw3 as "Column width" parameters that allow you to change the size of width of each section. Hope people don't mind, it won't affect anything existing.
This will simply allow this template to format easily with other templates such as match lineups.

Reference to printed sources
editCan the "report" parameter be used to put in a reference to an offline source? I often use books for sources for old matches and would like to use a reference in the box. Could I use that paramater, or have a new one added? Bcp67 (talk) 10:08, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
So much space ...
editPlease compress the table a bit. It is very messy on a big screen — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 17:07, 18 July 2023 (UTC)
- I disagree. – PeeJay 21:48, 20 July 2023 (UTC)
On a large screen, the content is "splattered about" and not at all "joined up". The templates need to lose much of the whitespace and perhaps should add faint rules or borders or perhaps pale background colours that unify the structure — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 10:52, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
- I swear, it looks fine on my screen and I'm using a 27-inch monitor. – PeeJay 13:17, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
