Marksmanship awards

edit

Shouldn't Rifle Marksman be in with the other Marksman ribbons? Lou Sander (talk) 13:26, 21 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

There are different sections for ribbons and for medals. The expert ones are medals, and the other ones are ribbons. -- I. Pankonin (t·c) 03:07, 23 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm not a subject matter expert, but that seems like a distinction without a difference. There are distinctly ribbons and medals, but (I think) when you qualify for one, you qualify for the other. Aren't the ribbon and the medal just different physical manifestations of the same qualification? Don't winners just wear the ribbon on some uniforms and the medal on others? I'm not an expert either. I've been using the Wikipedia pages as my source. However, I believe I can correct you with an image of Peter Pace wearing both ribbons (on his right) and medals (on his left) on the same uniform. -- I. Pankonin (t·c) 06:20, 23 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
The difference is indeed in the level of qualification. The rifle and pistol expert qualifications yield a medal to be worn on Navy uniforms, but the ribbon as well for uniforms where medals are not worn. A weapons qualification lower than expert yields a ribbon only award (with a S or M device). This makes Lou Sander correct.
The image of Peter Pace is incorrect in two ways: one, he is a Marine, not a Sailor, and wears a different marksmanship device; and two, in that a person in the US military would never wear the same award twice on the same uniform, whether ribbons, medals, or both. Gen Pace is simply wearing his medals on his left and ribbons for awards that have no medal on his right.
As far as having a separate section in the navbox for the marksmanship awards, I think that's silly. Both the medals and the ribbons can abide side by side. In fact, we could probably eliminate the links to the ribbon only awards without too much loss, since the Marksmanship Medal article describes when to wear the medal and when to wear the Marksmanship Ribbon. bahamut0013 15:40, 15 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Help

edit

{{helpme}} Attempting to edit this goes to a double redirect through Template:US navy department decorations; the template should be able to be formatted not to scroll off the right of the page (I was going to compare/ reformat like Template:Inter-service decorations of the United States military, but I can't get to it. Fixed. You could have edited it directly by clicking on "edit this page" link at the top, but the problem with the edit link inside the template was that the parameter "|raw_name =" was pointing at the redirect to the uncapitalized name.
