The Convenience Store (Japanese: 夜勤事件) is a 2026 Japanese horror film screenplayed by Yoshimasa Akamatsu and directed by Jirô Nagae.[2] The film is based on the independent video game of the same name by developer Chilla's Art.[3] It stars Kotona Minami, Takeo Gozu, Tetta Seki, Terunosuke Takezai, Shunsuke Tanaka, Natsuki Kato, Mai Tezuka.[4]
Plot
[edit]At the beginning of the film a family was brutally murdered and the killer was killed himself by jumping at the bridge
one night Yukino Tazuru is going to LT convenient store for her shift, she’s working night shift at the said convenience store. Arrived in work Funabashi said that their missing store manager is going to replace soon. In another night policemen Shinji Saruwatari and Kazuki Kondo came to the convenience store because Yukino discovered the dead body of their store manager. Interrogating by Shinji, Yukino looking at the clock and gave the SD card, she said the it came 4 days ago.
In a flashback, Yukino was about to dispose the expired item at the back of the store but she met Yukio Matsuura and he ask for the garbage that she’s going to throw and he immediately leave. While piling up the items, delivery man came and gave the box to Yukino. The box contained SD card. Yukino revealed that there’s not 1 but 3 more SD card was delivered to her.
Yukino’s First Night
Funabashi said all the things happened at the store and said that do her usual job to spray away the rats at the back of the store. While spraying she saw a black car where a woman driver angrily looking at her and drove away. Back in the store an elderly came in the store looking for Ken and saying that their convenience store is her daughter house. At the computer in the office of the store Yukino saw a child outside of the store standing and when she came outside the boy disappeared but she saw a box at the front door same at the box that was delivered to her.
Second Night
After changing uniform Funabashi scared her, saying to him the she still receiving weird boxes that contains SD card with creepy videos. While looking at the Aircon, a repairman arrived named Hamada to repair the aircon. while working and putting boxes at the storage and grab another boxes to put outside, the door suddenly can’t open. Asking for help outside there’s a woman walking fast that scared her and she heard Hamada screaming. In the dark storage room she saw a child asking if he’s Ken but the child is not alone there’s a woman in black standing in dark that made her scared and run, when she opened the door Tamayo is at the door asking if she is okay and she gave her a charm. Going to the office she saw another box. Interrupting the interrogation, Kondo asking how well is Yukino. Shinji revealed to Kondo that the convenience store is haunted. Shinji looking at Yukino and Yukino is looking at the clock.
Third Night
Yukino having a video call to her mom before her shift. 1AM in the morning the doorbell is keep ringing and when Yukino look suddenly the lights inside her apartment flickering and suddenly turned off and she hear a noise under her bed and she look at it she saw a lady under the bed. looked back, Stepped back in fear and when she look again she saw another box.
Fourth Night Yukino is looking for Funabashi and she timed in for her shift. after her time in inside the office when she opened the door the store suddenly changed and became a room full of LCD screen. She panicked and trying to get outside when she heard a metal clanging she saw behind her the black lady who’s walking towards her and suddenly disappeared, she checked the charm that Tamayo gave to her and the charm turned to dust. Walking in the storage room she saw the store manager, dead and his eyes gouged out.
She said to Shinji that her consciousness disappeared and when she regained it she immediately called the police. Shinji noticed that Yukino always looking at the time. Yukino asked to check the remaining contents of the SD card. She said that the location of the last video is on her house.
Shinji’s First Night
Kondo reports to Shinji all the information of the SD cards that Yukino gave to him saying that there’s no movie that matches to the clips in the SD card. Kaho visited Shinji to give him the lunchbox and show to him the ultrasound of their baby. So stressed about the case of the convenience store he also experiencing weird scenarios.
The Second Night
While in the office, Shinji surprised when he saw a male child under his table. The grandmother named Kazuko came to the office looking for Ken and when he looked under the table the child was gone. Looking at the files of Masaharu Onodera he learned that Masaharu murdered his family and record it in a video camera and saved it in 4 SD cards. Looking at the photos of the victims he was shocked when he saw the picture of the kid that exactly looked like the child under his table in his office.
The Third Night
Shinji reviewing the videos in the SD card when he suddenly saw himself, he goes to the door to check who’s filming him when Kondo opened the other door. In his office the door suddenly opened and she saw the black lady that Yukino always see and he woke up.
The Fourth Night
Back to the convenience store and reviewing the CCTV footage he saw Yukino was afraid of something and check the area he saw a metal fastener hearing a sound in the storage he saw Ken and when he looked at the nails he suddenly saw the black lady he ran in fear he suddenly saw Tamayo and she was giving the same charm that she gave to Yukino but Shinji didn’t accept it. He directly go to hospital to see Funabashi and angrily asked what he saw before the body of their former store manager Tsurukawa recovered. Funabashi told the he also see and talked to the woman in the black car named Noriko Hosoe. She was asking about the strange smell in the convenience store.
Funabashi revealed that Noriko was having an affair to Tsurukawa and revealing that he saw them went to the basement multiple times. He also said that Tsurukawa is a stalker and he was stalking Yukino but he accused Hamada the repairman that he’s the one who’s doing bad to Yukino and while Hamada repairing the aircon he attacked him with a crowbar. He also saw Yukino unconscious outside the store and when he wakes up her he was attacked by Yukio.
Driving back to the convenience store to check the CCTV footage in the back of the store Shinji thinking that when he watch the video in the SD card you will get cursed and die but Yukino and his team didn’t die. When he entered the convenience store the door closed and the lights went out and can’t go out the store changed and suddenly there’s a lot of LCD screen and metal nails in the store.
When he tried to open the door of the storage room he heard a metal clanking then he saw the black lady behind him and suddenly the door opened. Watching the CCTV in the storage room he saw Yukino and Yukio talking. Yukio revealed that the video in SD card was cursed and the only way to escape the curse is to copy the video in the SD card and show it to someone within 4 days. And it also shows in the CCTV that the idea of calling the police and watch the video in the SD card was Yukio’s idea. Shinji learned that he’s running out of time and Kaho was in danger driving fast to Kaho’s house, he saw Kaho sleeping and he immediately realized that their baby is going to die.
At the end of the film, Yukino standing in the street when she hears a clanking metal and she saw a metal nail and when she picked up the nail she saw what really happened to Tsurukawa.
In the end credits seeing the black lady was smiling while looking at Noriko running in fear.

Production
[edit]The film was produced under a production committee system which included Chilla’s Art, original creators of the horror game the movie adapts, contributing the story and creative direction.[7] Canter, distributor and co-producer, likely involved in funding and logistics and NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan, helped with production support and possibly marketing/home video distribution.[8] The film's theme song, titled Night Shift Incident, was performed by Liza.[9]
Filming
[edit]The movie was shot primarily in practical sets replicating a convenience store, including both a full-scale interior set and on-location shots. Cinematography was done by Masayuki Nakazawa, focusing on tight, claustrophobic framing. Director Jirō Nagae aimed for a realistic but unsettling style and the production uses practical effects for jump scares and supernatural elements, rather than relying heavily on CGI.[10]
Release
[edit]The film was first screened at Human Trust Cinema Shibuya on January 28, 2026,[9] and was released nationwide on February 20, 2026, under Canter[11] and NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan.[12][13][14]
