Kirti Jain is an Indian theatre director and professor of drama. She was Director of the National School of Drama for seven years (1988 - 1995).[1] She is the recipient of several honours, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for direction in 2011.[2] She is a life trustee of Natarang Pratishthan, a private trust that maintains a large collective of material related to theatre in India.
Early life and education
editKirti Jain was born in December 1949 in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh, India. Her parents were Nemi Chandra Jain, poet, critic and theatre personality, and Rekha Jain, children's playwright and dancer. She grew up in Delhi, and obtained a master's degree in English from Delhi University.[2]
After her MA, she did a Diploma in dramatics from NSD. During this period she was mentored by Ebrahim Alkazi. Talikg about this period, she says: "It really opened me up as a person."[3]
Career
editAfter her diploma, Kirti Jain worked for five years as a producer at Doordarshan.
Jain joined NSD as Assistant Professor in 1977.[4] While still in her 30s, she was appointed Director of NSD, and held the position for seven years (1988-1995). She started the Theatre in Education programme of NSD, along with some other new initiatives.
After the end of her term as director, she reverted to serving as a professor in NSD until her superannuation. In 2010, she was awarded the B V Karanth Smriti Puraskar which is warded to selected NSD alumni for their overall contributionto theatre.[5]
Jain is a member of the Editorial board of the journal Studies In Theatre and Performance published by Exeter University. She is also a contributor to the Companion to the Indian Theatre and Oxford Encyclopaedia of Theatre and Performance.[4].
