Jai Hind is a metro station in Kolkata (unofficially also known as Biman Bandar metro station or Airport metro station). It will serve the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. This station will also have a yard, and it will be the largest underground facility of India, and city's first. It will be 550m long and 41.6m wide, and will facilitate stabling and reversal of rakes, but it won't be a carshed.[1] Here, Line 4 and Line 6 will meet. There will be 5 tracks, two for Line 4. two for Line 6 and two for terminating and departing both Noapara and Kavi Subhash bound trains. Previously the station was planned elevated, but after objection from AAI, the route was reworked and the station was panned underground. It will be 500m away from the current terminal building, and 150m from the proposed new terminal building but it will be connected via subways which will be having walkalators, then there will be escalator or elevator to reach the arrival or the departure levels. Counters for luggage check-in could be set up at the station and there might be a dedicated corridor for transporting the luggage to the boarding point. Also a longer corridor would be built for passengers to reach Jessore Road.[2]
History
editConstruction
editThe execution of this project has been entrusted to RVNL and the construction of the station-cum-yard is being done by ITD Cementation India Ltd. The tentative deadline is June 2021.
Delays
editThe work has been delayed for years due to multiple issues. At first AAI objected the station above the ground, stating that this could be a threat for air traffic. Many underground utilities, power sub-station and water treatment plant had to be shifted. Encroachments and Land acquisition problems held up the project for multiple times.[3]

Extension up to Kavi Subhash Metro Station (New Garia)

During her second tenure (2009–2011) she inaugurated the extension, and also introduced new state-of-the-art Air Conditioned rakes, manufactured indigenously at the Integral Coach Factory, at Perambur near Chennai.
The new extension to Garia Bazar in the south opened to the public on 23 August 2009. The Garia Bazar station was named after Kavi Nazrul. A final extension from Kavi Nazrul (Garia Bazar) to Kavi Subhash (New Garia) was inaugurated on 7 October 2010, bringing the total number of stations to 23. On the same day, two Air-Conditioned rakes were also pressed into service.
Future extension
editThe plan to extend Line 1 in the north from Dumdum to Dakshineswar (5.2 km) is under execution. The construction of this stretch started in February 2010. It will be met by the metro line from Barrackpore at Baranagar (12.5 km).[4]
