DYK backlog blitz

edit

The 2020 DYK Inaugural Backlog Blitz is an eight-day effort to reduce the backlog of unapproved Did you know nominations. Please ensure that you familiarize yourself with the DYK review process before starting to review a nomination, and that you are also familiar with the DYK rules and the supplemental guidelines elaborating on those rules. The coordinator for this blitz is BlueMoonset. If you have any questions, please leave a message on this blitz's talk page. The blitz begins on Sunday, 19 July 2020 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on Sunday, 26 July 2020 at 23:59 (UTC).

The ultimate goal of this backlog elimination drive is to cut the number of unapproved DYK nominations—as this is written there are 302 nominations, 229 of which are unapproved. The primary way to do this is to review unreviewed nominations. A secondary, but also important way, is to complete a review that needs a new reviewer, frequently because the previous reviewer has proposed a new hook, since no one can approve their own hook. Barnstars will be awarded to reviewers who participate and complete a certain number of reviews in either or both of these categories. Because this is a backlog reduction drive, only reviews that are not used as quid pro quo (QPQ) reviews can be submitted to this blitz, as QPQs do not reduce the backlog. To be eligible, full reviews must explicitly cover all of the DYK criteria, and all reviews must be specific about which hooks are approved. Each review will be checked by a coordinator to ensure this, and reviews that are not complete or are incorrect in their assessment may be disqualified.

Basic guidelines

edit
  1. Give preference to older nominations. While any review counts for the drive, please give extra consideration to nominations that are over a month old. There will be a list of older nominations on the DYK talk page.
  2. Log completed DYK reviews here. If you do a full review of a DYK nomination, or complete a review that had a   request after an initial review, don't forget to list it in the section provided on this page so that you can get credit for the review. The review must include one of the tick or other icons shown in the area around the editing window.
  3. No rubber-stamping DYKs. In addition to newness and length, DYK nominations need to be checked for neutrality of hook and article, that each hook fact is in the article and sourced by the end of the sentence it's in, and that the source fully supports the fact. Paragraphs should be sourced (with only a few specific exceptions), the article should be free from close paraphrasing and copyvios, and there should be no bare-URL refs. Images must be in the article and free. Each review and its article will be checked by the coordinator to ensure that rubber-stamping does not happen.
  4. Only reviews that have not and will never be used as QPQs are eligible. If you submit it here, you can't use it later as a QPQ; the whole point is to reduce the backlog, and QPQs just help keep it from growing too fast.
  5. Provide constructive criticism. If you see a problem or problems in a certain article you're reviewing, don't be afraid to mention it and indicate to the nominator what's wrong. Rather than merely pointing to the problems, guide the nominator to possible ways of fixing those problems, such as a copy edit or adding or clarifying information.
  6. Stick with it. Although this is a blitz, doing a complete review can frequently turn up fixes that the nominator needs to make before approval can be given. Even though you get credit for the complete review when you start from scratch (or from a discussion that's only about possible hooks), please consider staying with the article until it gets to the point that it can be approved, or (far less usual) has to be failed. Generally, a nominator should respond within seven days, though reviewers can allow more time. In the case of pre-existing reviews that need a new reviewer, these should be completed by the end of the blitz, though a couple of days to get the final issues wrapped can be taken if necessary.
  7. Have fun. We're here to help bring these articles to the main page, and while doing so to improve the overall quality of the encyclopedia. Thanks for participating!

Participant reviews

edit

As noted earlier, only full reviews on unreviewed nominations (hook discussions do not affect review status) and completions of reviews needing a new reviewer can be submitted, and then only ones that are not and will not also be submitted for QPQ credit. Nomination reviews you started work on before 19 July (UTC time) do not count. Reviews started from 19 July through 26 July but completed after that date can be included in the list.

A sample review section is below; all sections start with a fourth-level header containing the editor's username and the {{Div col}} template, and end with the {{Div col end}} template. Between those templates, each nomination reviewed is given its own line. Use the "DYK" icon line ( ) for a full review of an article, and the "DYK2" icon line ( ) where you completed a review that the prior reviewer had stopped reviewing. Please only add a review here once you have achieved one of those. If this is a multi-article nomination, please note how many articles you reviewed for it after the end of the line, i.e., "(two articles)", to be sure we give you proper credit for each review.
