Urutur is a village near Yerraguntla in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cuddapah. Roman catholicism started in Urutur way back in 1850 when missionary fathers visited the village. An old church which dates back to 1888 is still in the village.[citation needed] Many of the converts are Reddys, from the work of Monsignor J. Balanadar (a native of the area).[1] Any Reddy Catholic from Kadapa Diocese has links to this remote village.[citation needed] A new church is built in the village in the year 2000.[citation needed] Every Sunday, mass will be celebrated in the new as well as old church.[citation needed] More than 30 people from this village dedicated their lives to the Gods service by becoming catholic fathers and nuns.[citation needed]
During the mid 19th century, when Cuddapah was a cantonment, Rev. Father Patrick Doyle regularly used to visit the village and a large number of converts were made in Urutur during that time.[citation needed] Fr. Martin Verheijen, a native of Netherlands worked in the parish of Urutur.[2]
