Overview
editParktown High School for Girls is situated in the suburb of Parkview. Founded in 1923[1] this well known public girls school is over 100 years old. The school has a reputation for excellent results and is renowned within the district and the province (Gauteng) for regularly achieving a 100% pass rate. [2][3][4] Parents, teachers and learners balance over a century[5] of educational tradition with a progressive approach to contemporary education.[6] The school curriculum has a strong academic focus on the Humanities, Mathematics, and Sciences. The school follows the nationally prescribed Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement[7] (CAPS) for the General Education and Training (GET) level for grades 8 and 9 and for the National Senior Certificate, the exit point of the Further Education and Training (FET) level for grades 10 to 12
Admissions to Park Town Girls
editAdmission to the school is governed by the GDE's feeder zone policy.[8] Admissions are prioritized for those who live in the area (within a 5km radius of a school). An applications for Grade 8 should be made the previous year, using the GDE's The Online Admissions Application System. Desperate parents have been known to take devious steps to enroll their children into this high functioning school.[9] There are five entry criteria - feeder zone, previous school, sibling at Park Town Girls, parents working in the feeder zone, living beyond 30km [10]
Student Life
editExtracurricular activities are a key part of Parktown high school for Girls. Character is built outside the classroom. Whether it is sport, culture or community involvement.[11]
Parktown High School for Girls' brother school is Parktown Boy's High School. This pair of schools have a century's worth of shared history and culture. [12] Since the fundamental infrastructure of Jo'burg had been established by 1923, many of the today's familiar activities were also practiced by young women and men, 100 years ago. Watching rugby at Ellis Park, visiting the Zoo, attending Wits University, or having a special lunch at the Country Club in Auckland Park. [13]Girls-only schooling had many benefits over a co-ed class and matriculants leave the school as confident women, ready for tertiary education, [14] where they can reach for the stars. While there are some expressed concerns about "institutionalised discrimination" among the school community. Race and its obvious ambiguities[15] is a topic that is addressed at school. Race, and its intersection with socio-economic and class-related factors, contribute towards the emergence of young women's emerging adolescent identity, [16] and citizens, who can confidently express themselves across a range of cultural, sporting and academic activities, are the result.[17]

Teachers and Support Services
editParktown teachers are renowned for their commitment and efforts. They are expected to lead by example. Sadly, the "prescriptive conditions" imposed by the GDE, limit teacher creativity. Leaders at Parktown High School for Girls are openly critical of the education department. They see education problems in the country as having deep roots, which they believe must be addressed earlier on, in grade one "rather than starting in high school".[18]
