The period of French domination (Vietnamese: Pháp thuộc; Hán-Nôm: 法屬) refers to a 61 year long period in the history of Vietnam when the Empire of Đại Nam was ruled over by France. The period starts in 1884 when the Huế Court signed the Patenôtre Treaty officially establishing the French protectorates of Annam and Tonkin

Some historians suggest that the French domination period should be counted from 1867 (ie lasting nearly 80 years), when the Nguyễn dynasty ceded the Six Provinces of Southern Vietnam to France.
