Good Article nominations

edit

Dr. Blofeld, I know you're the busiest contributor to Wikipedia, but I was wondering if you could please review one of my many articles nominated on the GAN page. I always appreciate your input and suggestions, and it would be a privilege to have you review the article of your choosing. As always, your reviews are greatly appreciated! If you so choose, let me know which one you've selected to review. Thanks again! -- Caponer (talk) 21:16, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

That's not exactly true any longer!! There's some people putting in a lot more daily work than I do! Sure, I'll reserve one for tomorrow.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:19, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

What do you mean that isn't true? You're forever the hard charger on here! Thanks for your consideration and time, sir. -- Caponer (talk) 21:22, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
There's lot of editors on here who put in more actual content on a daily basis than I do on average, Aymatth2, Cwmhiraeth, Peter I. Vardy, Kaayay, Ipigott, Ramblersen for starters. I often produce what I term "The Jimbo effect", and I don't mean civility preaching. By that of course I mean that people generally think you contribute more content on a daily basis than you actually do, yet you're around. I think a lot of people would be deceived into thinking that Jimbo built most of the encyclopedia himself! I might get one day a week where I really contribute some serious material, it's very difficult to block out what goes on on here and have the motivation to focus purely on adding a wealth of content to the encyclopedia every day. I try to block it out as much as I can, but when I see seasoned contributors like Cassianto treated like that and leaving it really is something of a motivation killer.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:26, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Small King Lear tidbit for you

edit

Hello DB. I am watching the second season of Shakespeare Uncovered. The episode about King Lear had some clips from King Lear (1971 USSR film) which were fascinating. Sadly they didn't show any clips from Ran (film). While thinking about AK's version I remember an interesting coincidence. The makeup and wig that Tatsuya Nakadi wore was similar (very IMO) to that worn by Sir (Albert Finney) in the film version of The Dresser. Now I don't think AK was copying that film, but, as TD was released in 83 and R in 85 I remember being stuck by the similarities at the time. If you haven't already seen it you should add The Dresser to your list. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 22:53, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Forgot to mention the sad news of Geraldine McEwan's passing. She didn't have a large presence in films (her brief appearance in Branagh's Henry V was excellent) but I think her TV role as MIss Jean Brodie ranks with Maggie Smith's and her Lucia (Mapp and Lucia) set a standard that, I hope, Anna Chancellor is living up to. MarnetteD|Talk 22:59, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
Thankyou MD. Yes I was impressed with the director's The Overcoat which I saw only the other week, shot of course almost 50 years before King Lear! I'd read that he had some great Shakespearean-based films and have made a mental note to try to see his films sometime. I think I've seen bits of The Dresser but that was a long time ago and don't recall seeing the whole film. Even films I saw a few years ago they might be worth watching again anyway as my viewing has matured since then, I saw Top Hat again yesterday for instance and loved it!! Swing Time I still think the plot is rather weak but enjoyed it more now, partly perhaps because I've developed a crush on Ginger Rogers! Very much enjoyed Local Hero BTW, but I have a particular affinity for films shot in rural/coastal Scotland and Ireland!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:18, 1 February 2015 (UTC)
Tonight's SU episode was about The Taming of the Shrew. As you are viewing so many Meryl Streep performances I thought you should see this clip from 78. It makes me wish the whole thing had been recorded. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 04:30, 7 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks MD. I've been having a bit of a break from films (and wikipedia) for a few days!♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:05, 7 February 2015 (UTC)

Mansi Township

edit

Hello, Doc! You created the {{Mansi Township}} template in 2010, and I created the Gasha disambiguation just now. The template contains an entry leading to "Gasha", so I wanted to add it to the dab and fix the link accordingly. However, I have no idea what all those entities in the template are. Am I right to assume they are all populated places in that township? Would you be so kind as to correct the link so it no longer points to the disambig, please? Thanks!—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); February 2, 2015; 18:36 (UTC)

I thought Rich Farmbrough was sorting out the dab links for all of the Burmese templates?♦ Dr. Blofeld 23:14, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

I only have a vague recollection of this, but I certainly haven't been watching them for newly created dab pages! All the best: Rich Farmbrough23:17, 2 February 2015 (UTC).
That's OK; I'm just trying to figure out what this "Gasha, Kachin" is. A village? A town? Is there anywhere to look it up? I'd like to add it to the dab page, but something needs to be said in the description... Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); February 4, 2015; 13:09 (UTC)

About your (non)participation in the January 2012 SOPA vote

edit

Hi. I am Piotr Konieczny (User:Piotrus), you probably know me as an active content creator (see my userpage), but I am also a professional researcher of Wikipedia. Recently I published a paper (downloadable here) on reasons editors participated in Wikipedia's biggest vote to date (January 2012 WP:SOPA). I am now developing a supplementary paper, which analyzes why many editors did not take part in that vote. Which is where you come in :) You are a highly active Wikipedian (12th most active!), and you were active back during the January 2012 discussion/voting for the SOPA, yet you did not chose to participate in said vote. I'd appreciate it if you could tell me why was that so? For your convenience, I prepared a short survey at meta, which should not take more than a minute of your time. I would dearly appreciate you taking this minute; not only as a Wikipedia researcher but as a fellow content creator and concerned member of the community (I believe your answers may help us eventually improve our policies and thus, the project's governance). PS. If you chose to reply here (on your userpage), please WP:ECHO me. Thank you! --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 14:51, 4 February 2015 (UTC)

Hey Doc, any chance you could help me out with this? Few more responses would really be very valuable to me. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 16:14, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Singtan Xayluexong

edit

The article Singtan Xayluexong has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails GNG, No RS

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. A tag has been placed on René Fehr requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. The article Mohammad Sewar has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this newly created biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. JBH (talk) 00:34, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

The article is ready for reviewing, doc.  Ssven2 speak 2 me 14:49, 8 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for passing it, doc. I will open a peer review in a week's time after I have expanded the article further. One thing — In the FAC review of Chandralekha, Bollyjeff said that he did not want to see Behindwoods.com in the article. Here there are around 35-40 references from Behindwoods.com. I can find other RS's to replace some of the sources, but, I can't remove all of them. What should I do then?  Ssven2 speak 2 me 05:52, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

I'd take it to the reliable sources board for wider input. It does sound like a non RS, but I've seen it in numerous articles ad didn't question it. If it is a valuable resource for such article and it would affect content by removing it then perhaps it is worth challenging.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:41, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
I have done it here. User:Bladesmulti supported it. So, I didn't add any further comments. In Enthiran. I took care to only include those articles of Behindwoods.com that are not rumours. Should I take it to the noticeboard again? — Ssven2 speak 2 me 10:03, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
I'd personally consider it a reliable source for Tamil film as it's affiliated with the Times of India which is one of the most reputable Indian sources. And we have an article on it of course. It's not some sugary blog or something. Bollyjeff, what was your concern with it? I think it would seriously affect the comprehension if we removed it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:22, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
It was tagged as unreliable during my first GA review Talk:Shriya_Saran/GA2, and other too as I recall. I just assumed the reviewers were right. BollyJeff | talk 13:25, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
The Hindu included it in its list of favoured apps for film buffs. — Ssven2 speak 2 me 10:24, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
There's quite an argument to support keeping it as a source then. You said something about expanding it further though. I don't think that's a good idea. I was thinking that it would have to be given a considerable cut before going to FAC as it's already 166kb, which is pretty massive. Release and box office in particular are too long.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:26, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

@Bollyjeff: At that time, the website was starting to develop. But now, it has its own awards ceremony called "Behindwoods Gold Medal Awards". It has been going on for the past two years (2013 and 2014). You can learn about the awards ceremony here. They also conducted a film festival for IIT Madras. — Ssven2 speak 2 me 14:04, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

I'm afraid I don't think that's a good idea Nvv. I'm not DYK orientated any more, I tend to focus on just a couple nowadays. I have some books I need to be cracking on with for GA too. I don't mind doing the occasional one though. Thankyou for your expansion of the Indian one. I think cleaning up the odd Indian city or district or national park/temple article is a good idea though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:10, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Help

edit

Would you like to comment here as there is a discussion going on. Its Wp:Own case. Pls, help.—Prashant 07:16, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

I'd rather stay out of that one Prashant. All I'll say, as I said recently at the SRK FAC, is that Bollywood articles in general I think tend to be more sugary than Hollywood ones. A large part of it I think is the film critic system in India where I strongly suspect that some of the reviewers, particularly ones like Taran Adarsh are paid to say those things or there is some sort of corruption involved in film reviewing. Threatening to delist a bunch of Krimuk's FA's because you disagree with him on Chopra though is a bit immature don't you think?♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:37, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Well, I just answered his questioned as according to him something, which is also present in his edited articles, is fluff. So I said If that is a fluff then, the same thing is present in your article. I just answered his question. I just want equality for all the articles. Either convert all Bollywood articles as Chopra's or Convert Chopra's like those female heroes and Cinema Legends, who have contributed much to Indian Cinema.—Prashant 10:27, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Re: Stork Club

edit

There's more to add but I've been busy for the last few days uploading at Commons. I have quite a few news clippings set aside at Newspapers.com. There are 3 non-free photos in the article-the dining room, the Cub Room and the photo of some of the Stork Club's gifts. Have been thinking that one should probably go and that one should probably be the main dining room. Have my eye on a postcard sent out by the Club from the days when it had live entertainment. Billingsley dropped the entertainers and just kept a live band for a long time because he realized the real entertainment of the place was people coming out to be seen and people watching them. All in all, I think this would work now for GA; also think there might be enough to add to consider trying FA with it. This has been one of my projects for some time, as you can see by when I made my first edit to it :) We hope (talk) 22:19, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Since I think we need to drop the Main Dining Room photo, what do you think about switching to the logo in that spot? File:Stork Club logo.jpg? We hope (talk) 21:08, 12 February 2015 (UTC)

Let me get started with the re-wording. I have some clippings re: celebs that can be added. Question: re: sfn-what do you do went you call on the ref twice-is it ref name blah, sfn template and end ref close tag, or do you just simply list them as many times as needed? I used to be able to access the book via Google but am now told there are no editions that can be viewed. My viewing has been done via Amazon UK. We hope (talk) 13:35, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Yep, that's what I meant-thanks! I am not allowed to view a copy of the book at Google any more, but am told there are no viewable editions. Funny because that's how I originally got the citations. :) So now I'm viewing at Amazon UK. ;) Using italics is fine with me ;) We hope (talk) 13:45, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
I'd searched for that information earlier and recently tried again but had no luck. I know there were other private rooms for parties as you see a "fleeting" reference to them, such as the Shermane Room, the Rheingold Room. The Rheingold Room has a non-free photo at Flickr and that's all I've seen about it. It may have been re-named at some point as it appears they may have paid to have the room named for the beer. While Fatima cigarettes was once a sponsor of the television show, there was a previous tie-up with Chesterfield. The club appeared in old print ads and some of the "non-classic" club ashtrays say "Chesterfield ashes only". I would believe Billingsley's youngest daughter, Sharmane, would have this in her possession, if it still exists, but haven't seen anything of it on the internet. We hope (talk) 14:21, 13 February 2015 (UTC)
Later today/tonight, I will try to upload some celebrity photos taken at the club--have one of John Wayne and wife Pilar, among others. We hope (talk) 14:25, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Have just dragged the paragraph into my sandbox. :) We hope (talk) 14:26, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Goodman Ace wrote comedy for a living and his style was subtle. His writings were mainly tounge in cheek. When the Milton Berle television program needed a big overhaul, Ace was hired to do the job to remove most to all of the slapstick from it because it was no longer producing ratings. Not long after that, a television columnist wrote that it was amazing to see Milton Berle keep his pants on through an entire program. :-) We hope (talk) 14:40, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello Dr. Blofeld! Since you've been so supportive of A Trip to the Moon and other articles about Georges Méliès, I thought you might be interested in joining a discussion about how best to cover his pioneering films on Wikipedia. I've started the discussion here: Talk:Georges Méliès filmography#What about the redlinks?

I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts and advice!--Lemuellio (talk) 04:29, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Valentine Greets!!!

edit
  Valentine Greets!!!

Hello Dr. Blofeld, love is the language of hearts and is the feeling that joins two souls and brings two hearts together in a bond. Taking love to the level of Wikipedia, spread the WikiLove by wishing each other Happy Valentine's Day, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past, a good friend, or just some random person.
Sending you a heartfelt and warm love on the eve,
Happy editing,
 - T H (here I am) 12:04, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Spread the love by adding {{subst:Valentine Greetings}} to other user talk pages.

That's an unusual comparison LOL The Herald but appreciated all the same. There should certainly be more love on wikipedia, at times it seems dominated by hostile people who assume bad faith..♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:25, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Stork Club

edit

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Stork Club you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria.   This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Jaguar -- Jaguar (talk) 20:20, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

There was a whole lot of miscellaneous stuff there that truly needed to be reformatted and linked. 66 edits (they were all small and incremental, but just trying to find them all was a pain). In any event, I learned a lot about the Stork Club, which was the place to be at the time. Very nice and in depth article. Great job! 7&6=thirteen () 18:06, 14 February 2015 (UTC)
Much appreciated, thanks!♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:14, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Nomination of Belize City Hospital for deletion

edit

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Belize City Hospital is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Belize City Hospital until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. JodyB talk 13:30, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Didn't you get the message JodyB? You're not welcome here. Don't you dare prod and template me.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:49, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

  • Actually, no, I didn't. JodyB talk 13:52, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

If you'd taken the liberty to treat me as a person instead of some random idiot I'd have told you that a redirect to the modern hospital would have been a better idea and some mention of the old city hospital there would probably be more appropriate than a separate article on what was there before. As it is you've wasted time opening an AFD. Try working with people instead of against people and things might run a bit more sweeter around here.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:54, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Now that the redirect was placed and I understand that old article was misnamed, I have closed the AFD. Thank you for your kindness. JodyB talk 13:58, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

You're most welcome JodyB, thankyou.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:59, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Juan Cotumba

edit

Okay so since the old ref for Juan Cotumba is just a dead link now, I was going to add a ref from sports reference for him-but I can't even find him on there. Is there another name for him or something? (I hate to put a unsourced tag for someone like that to be honest) Wgolf (talk) 19:15, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

@Wgolf: Try the web archive thing or BBC.There's other sources like [3] with other info.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:19, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! Got it now! Wgolf (talk) 19:20, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Ships that died

edit

I'm glad to note your interest in the Mary Celeste article. In the stub that you have just created for The Ship That Died, you include the line: "A feature film was made in 1955 by Ealing Studios, entitled The Ship That Died of Shame. This 1955 film has nothing to do with the Mary Celeste, and I wonder why you thought to mention it. It could confuse people into believing that there was a connection. Brianboulton (talk) 22:54, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Oh, really? I thought I caught a BFI source in searching earlier and took for granted it was also about the Mary Celeste. I shall remove it, thanks.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:58, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Brianboulton (talk) 08:35, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Louis Jourdan passed yesterday. So many memorable performances. RIP LJ. MarnetteD|Talk 21:50, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Ah that's a pity, yes, I was amazed he was still alive, in fact I was wondering if he had somehow passed and it not reported. I think his best performance actually was in The Paradine Case but his best role has got to be Octopussy. I had a feeling it would be this year or the next! He was probably the suavest actor in any film I've seen, he was the living embodiment of wealth and status wasn't he! There's really not many Golden Hollywood stars left now. I keep expecting Kirk Douglas, Olivia de Havilland and Christopher Lee to go soon, Douglas and Havilland are only the two real major Golden Hollywood stars I can think of which are still living.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:59, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

SchroCat Perhaps there'll be stuffed sheep's heads to devour at his funeral after party :-)! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:01, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

I know I mentioned it before but he was also my favorite Dracula. I was lucky enough to see him onstage back in the late 80s in a revival of Gigi where he was playing the role that Chevalier had played in the film. The last two times I have seen Lee he has looked so frail. I don't know how he survived the flight to NZ to film his scene for The Hobbit. MarnetteD|Talk 22:02, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

I don't think he did actually travel on a plane for the Hobbit, I thought they filmed his scenes in England, I might be wrong though. Not seen him in Dracula, I didn't like the 1958 film Gigi on first viewing, I found Chevalier irritating, but he's since grown on me so I may watch it again at some point. Jourdan was also particularly good in The VIPs. Letter from an Unknown Woman and Madame Bovary to a lesser extent too, there's still quite a lot of roles particularly in 60s I've not seen though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:04, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Your info about Lee makes sense. Yep LJ was excellent in the VIPs and Paradine. Here is his Count Dracula (1977 film) article. It came out on DVD several years ago over here - which is good as my VHS was fading away - but I don't know about its availability for you. Judi Bowker was good as Mina and Frank Finlay is superb has Van Helsing. Jack Shepherd's Renfield is one of the best I've seen. The only clunker is Richard Barnes' attempt at a Texas accent. MarnetteD|Talk 22:14, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

I began going through Doris Day's filmo, I've reached around 1955 so far I think, haven't quite come to Julie yet which she did with Jourdan. I got distracted as ther'e so many others to watch haha! Irma la Douce (which Jourdan narrated) I've been meaning to watch for a while, one of the few Billy Wilder films I've not seen! Actually in looking there's more Wilder films I haven't seen than I'd realised. I have a few on DVD like Witness for the Prosecution which I've not seen yet!♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:16, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

HeeHee that can happen with DVDs. I gotta be careful cause, once they move ten or more down the stack of new orders, they can disappear until a spring cleaning comes along :-) MarnetteD|Talk 22:28, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
Turns out Alan Howard passed away on the same day as Jourdan. He didn't have a big presence in films - The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover may be his highest profile one - but he was excellent in his numerous TV performances. I wish I could have seen him onstage. MarnetteD|Talk 16:37, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

Yes MD, I see Lizabeth Scott also died last month. Enjoyed her in Elvis's Loving You recently.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:29, 21 February 2015 (UTC)

@MarnetteD: Rhonda Fleming and Danielle Darrieux are still alive too. Darrieux posing naked for a painting in Lovers of Paris was a breathtaking sight (although being 1957 we didn't see too much)! an exquisite film, Duvivier really was one of the greats.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:05, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

I haven't seen that film DB. Thanks for letting me know about it. MarnetteD|Talk 17:29, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
The look of the film, 1850 or 1860s Paris, really is a joy to watch. I prefer the original title Pot-Bouille though, Lovers of Paris seems to cheapen it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:59, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Eric Caudieux

edit

The article Eric Caudieux has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Being a supporting member of a notable musician does not make this guy notable. Only source is related to the suject.

@Victor Lopes: Nobody said it does. But he seems to be notable if you care to spend a few minutes researching him. I'll remove your prod as I don't do them.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:51, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Re: The Ritz, London

edit

The 1904 photos should be OK for you to upload under the same license as we did for The Tower House and I believe the older interior images for Althorp. I've found some more Ritz photos at Geograph UK and can look at Flickr next. Then it would be off to old books at Archive.org and Google. ;) We hope (talk) 19:19, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

@We hope:I'm not sure, the Tower ones are form 1885, it's difficult to claim 100 years after life of author on ones from 1904, just 11 years afterwards. How about plans from 1904? It's got lots of the original plans in the other book I have too! I'll scan them later in the week. Flickr might have some modern interior ones on CC 2.0 license. [4]Dr. Blofeld 19:46, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

OK-got everything we could use from Flickr-there were some that were nice, but they're licensed as no derivatives. The restaurant photos made me hungry! :) We hope (talk) 20:46, 16 February 2015 (UTC)
Cheers for that. Will see how it goes as I write it, I can always ask for some on flickr.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:13, 16 February 2015 (UTC)

Have just stumbled onto a 1903 issue of Country Life with some very nice interior photos from that era. Country Life pages 53-59. Viewing this at Google UK and don't have any notice that it is still copyrighted--one can download the entire magazine. This dif says it all--the infobox photo was recently deleted at Commons. There isn't much left there. File:Tony Curtis as Houdini.jpg This one will need to go also because there's nothing to prove it's in the public domain. We hope (talk) 14:49, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
Surprised there's not more from trailers from the earlier 50s etc of him! Perhaps File:40_Pounds_of_Trouble_(1962)_trailer_1.jpg could be cropped and given a boost in colour/hue?♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:07, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Have just viewed the trailer--at the YouTube link provided by the uploader and at IMDB. Both are more recent copies, as they both were done to sell the film on home media. Both mention "the director of Moonstruck," which is a long way from 1962. Think this has to go also. We hope (talk) 20:03, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

If you've viewed the trailer at somewhere other than Internet Archive (saying this because there are copies of trailers there with copyright notices removed)-at either TCM or IMDB, etc. and you see no notice, then it's in the public domain without question. If you viewed a trailer that was before 1964 and had a notice, then you would need to see if the film itself was renewed. If it wasn't, then the trailer is also PD. Saying this about IA because not long ago, we had trailer screenshots at a FLC that had to go. The Commons uploader viewed the trailer at IA. However, both trailers viewed at TCM and IMDB had notices. We hope (talk) 15:15, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
I never liked Tony Curtis admittedly, always thought he was a slimeball who made my skin crawl, but a good actor in some great films..♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:18, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
Wow-he certainly did change wives a lot! Can you imagine going to all those weddings and needing to have a gift each time? :-) We hope (talk) 15:39, 22 February 2015 (UTC)
Surprisingly Janet Leigh was married 4 times too! And 3 marriages all before 1962! Her and Curtis struck me as an odd couple, total opposites I guess.♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:47, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

The article Patrick Fairweather has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references.

Kharkiv07 (talk) 20:59, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Do you realise how annoying it is when somebody removes a source from an article, even if a dead link without bothering to replace it, and then plasters unsourced tags on it and then some busybody comes along with deletion prod lecturing me on WP: Referencing for beginners within just hours? It's bloody irritating Kharkiv07 and pure laziness. Why would you think an ambassador to a country would not meet notability guidelines? Why is a bit of decent research not a better alternative to deletion? It's irresponsible. It's not the first time you User:Wgolf have done this sort of thing.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:41, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

My apologies for somebody else deleting a reference, however I'll have you know I did a fair amount of research on the guy but missed the one book that mentions his name. I'll cede that in this situation I may have been in the wrong, but also note that it was in accordance of the references for BLP and not notability guidelines. Just add one of those books and remove them. Kharkiv07 (talk) 21:44, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

One book? There's over a dozen books documenting him in google books. And I'd guess in Albanian newspapers archives there'd be many sources on him. The last deletion prod on an ambassador I had thrown at me was Mohammed Ali al-Ahwal BTW... ♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:46, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Okay. I apologies. I made a mistake but I assure you it was in good faith. Kharkiv07 (talk) 21:53, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

On your user page you even have a user box which states "This user loves Tagging pages for problems". No decent editor here is going to assume good faith in somebody who has that box on their user page.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:02, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

@Kharkiv07: Now a start class article. If I wasn't here it would have been deleted out of your sheer ignorance of the topic. In future please try to improve articles and research them before prodding. Thankyou.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:48, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Presentation proposal for Wikimania 2015

edit
How to pick up more women...
Hi Dr. B: Victuallers and I have developed a proposal for a talk to be presented at Wikimania 2015. It's titled, How to pick up more women... -- as in more women editors and more women's biographies. Examples include the Edit-a-thon blitz during WikiWomen's History Month and the "new articles" work underway by WikiProject Women Writers. The Wikimania talk proposal review process has begun and there's no guarantee that this proposal will be accepted. That's where you come in. Please review our proposal and give us feedback. Ultimately, we hope you add your name to the signup at the bottom of the proposal which signifies you'd be interested in the talk if you were attending it (it does not commit you to attending Wikimania). Thank you! Rosiestep (talk) 22:44, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Dweller Why is deletion always the preferable option here though? I'm sick of doing all of the work. Why wouldn't a nice "Can you expand this?" talk page message suffice instead of a prod? Can you tell us where you got the photo from? We really need a link for it and the page it's on, if possible. Otherwise the source will be in question and it could end up at FFD. List them on the file page and I'll archive them at Wayback Machine, so they'll be permanent. I believe we can FUR and license this after you list the links. We hope (talk) 14:03, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

You might want to include a note that there are two films by this title; this was also the German title for Room at the Top]. Let me see if I can use Tineye to get to a possible page for the photo. We hope (talk) 14:10, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
I'm told I can't move it back--that an admin needs to move it back. We hope (talk) 14:25, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
OK have licensed and FURed the file--just remember that the title on the file page needs to be changed when the page moves back. We hope (talk) 14:43, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
I think I would remove that as the YouTube copy is in black & white--it can always be re-added if anyone sees color copies--either film or frames/screenshots--at a later date. We hope (talk) 15:21, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

I fleshed out Thorndike somewhat and while doing that came up with information that needed to be added to the film. Have added the books but I see you've cited one already. We hope (talk) 18:23, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Much better! Adding a filmography now, but you might have to put it in year order! I've added one but hidden it. Not sure what the 1965/48 etc refers to or if that's really in the titles, but that was what was given on the DEFA bio entry on him. The imdb filmo looks a bit cleaner and might be better to use if not quite so comprehensive.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:55, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Agree with you that the IMDB version is more straightforward. There were some lists in some of the books but they were sort of "lumped" together in text and looked like it would be hard to determine which notes went to what film. We hope (talk) 20:14, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Ban appeal

edit

Hi,

Based on our communication I posted a ban appeal which was rejected (diff). To be honest, I was certain that I will be indeffed during this appeal, but I was probably lucky this time. Anyway, I just wanted to keep you informed about something we both discussed. All the best.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 23:58, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Article size

edit

How to measure the size of an article on Wikipedia? In Enthiran's PR, you mentioned that the article has decreased to 146 kbs from 166 kbs (it may have decreased even more so). How to find out the article's size like that?  Ssven2 Speak 2 me 05:38, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

You can paste in readable prose into here. That's what I do anyway.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:55, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Does "readable prose" mean just the prose or also including the reference style ("the cite web|url" thingy)? — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 08:41, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Obviously just the prose, not sourcing.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:04, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
I have trimmed the article considerably. What do you think of its present length?  Ssven2 Speak 2 me 10:15, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
What's the readable prose count then?♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:21, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
With the references, it's around 120kbs. — Ssven2 Speak 2 me 13:45, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
I said readable prose!! All you have to do is copy the text from the page itself and paste it into here. I've done it for you. Roughly 38,200 characters, that's OK now I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:50, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Hepburn

edit

So what's the problem this time? I've sourced Mann this time around, which most people accept as a "legitimate" biography. Yes, it supports Bowers' statements, yes, it depicts Tracy as a bisexual, yes it portrays Hepburn as a likely lesbian, yes, it assumes the relationship between Tracy and Hepburn was exaggerated. Do you mean that this biography is by default also "trashy" because it supports statements made by the Bowers' reference? I'm missing the point with your criticism. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Holanthony (talkcontribs) 18:33, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

There's just far too much "he confirmed it, "he didn't", "he disputed this" etc. It reads as a load of nonsense. Where is the actual proof? How reliable are the claims, really?? I really think the article is better off without even mentioning it.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:36, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

But wasn't that just the point? That the rumours were claimed to be unsubstantiated? And when I illustrated that these are sentiments conveyed by other biographers as well, even before Bowers' "tell-all" you called it "nonsense"? To my knowledge, Mann's biography has never been refuted and is accepted as "legitimate" Why shouldn't it be a relevant source any less than say James Curtis' book, that has been cited ad infinitum in the article? The talks surrounding the "gay issue" have been circling around these two for decades and since there are reports galore about it out there from reputable sources, it seems shortsighted to act like nothing and pretend it never existed.Holanthony (talk) 20:13, 25 February 2015 (UTC)Holanthony

No, as they sort of cancel each other out! Most of the Hollywood actors at one time had a gay rumour or something reported about them and I'm sure most of us can well imagine that many of them at times strayed or did things when drunk. What would make it noteworthy and encyclopedic? Now somebody like Cary Grant, there's extensive coverage documenting the "Was he gay?" issue, not Tracy, at best it's one or two sensationalist writers or a writer agreeing with another that Tracy was bisexual. I just google book searched Spencer Tracy bisexual and it turned up one very brief mention in a book and a magazine comment saying "it's ridiculous". Where's the extensive coverage documenting it?♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:21, 25 February 2015 (UTC) Well, isn't the fact that acknowledged biographers actually do mention that Tracy was bisexual and Hepburn gay a point worth mentioning? By that it is no longer a wild "sensationalist" rumour someone's posted on a blog or in a forum on the net, it actually carries some weight to it as one can presume there has been some research and substance put into the matter. The fact that Mann brings it up I think is worth a mention.Holanthony (talk) 23:25, 25 February 2015 (UTC)Holanthony

I know I am too deep in the history books!

edit

I just started working on Pocahontas (1910 film) and I found the play was adapted by Lloyd Lonergan from Lydia Sigourney's poem... which is strange because I have a half-finished article about the school she attended - East District School - at age 4. It is actually Sigourney's writings which helped me rectify the errors in the East District School (i.e. not built in 1798), but it is weird to have so many threads of history become inter-twinned. Have you noticed this in your writings? 55 of 1087 films down... I wonder how many more interconnections will come up. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 22:20, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Excellent work ChrisGualtieri on the old films!♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:11, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

La Cabineta (?) and Ettington Park Hotel pictures

edit
Good evening Dr. I hope your plans for total world control are going ok. Two wildly unrelated things, but which I believe you may have an interest in..
I recall seeing a Spanish short, it would have been early 80s, called I think La Cabineta. I assume that translate as "The box". A dark, deeply effective horror film, involving a killer telephone box. I remember the build up of impending doom and tension was wonderful, well shot and beautifully paced. Does it ring any bells? I wouldnt mind knocking something out covering it. Never thought about working in filmic subjects, but always a first time.
I stayed at Ettington Park Hotel in early 2006, with a long forgotten ex. I love good hotels. I have just remembered I took lots of good pics on my old mobile of the time, which I had completely forgotten about. I will dig it out and attempt to download them onto the PC. It cost over 2 grand for a week. Nice place, shame about the ex. But i'm not bitter. Dunno if you had any input into the Ettington article? Irondome (talk) 23:28, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
@Irondome: Sorry, just read this! Yes I started the Ettington article didn't I? Interior photos would be warmly welcome. Is there enough material to get it up to GA? We hope what do you reckon? Actually in looking at it its much sparser than I'd thought, just about start class, not even C class yet!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:22, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Doc, I think it would be, with expansion. There's the history of the house before it was turned into a hotel to build on and also more, if possible, on the filming of The Haunting there. If sources can be found for either or both of these, it shouldn't be a big problem to go to GA. There may also be some newspaper and magazine stories that would help us here. We hope (talk) 17:30, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

BTW-congrats, as Bramshill House is now an FA! :-) We hope (talk) 17:38, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
Thanks! Yes, but I wasn't sure how much there was on architecture of Ettington. It needs to much work for now to take on I think. There's others which need less work to get to GA!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:46, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
A couple of pics of the library, as I recall, and a couple of pics of what was said to be the best room in the hotel. It was split level. We got a lucky upgrade after extending our stay. The restuarant was amazing, idiot never took any pics, did he? Might have took a pic of the long gallery, cant quite recall. Food was amongst the best i've ever had, anywhere. Some outdoor shots, and a pic of that funky little ruined chapel in the grounds. They are on my old samsung 500, the slider type. Decent camera. I just sensed you would have had a hand in Ettington. Happy to help out there in any way. Cheers Doc Irondome (talk) 18:31, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
I started it when I got The Haunting article up to GA status...♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:33, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
I think that was a major reason why we went. We both knew the film. Great atmosphere. Amazingly I have the paperwork still, including the bill, which is still depressing. More interestingly the hotel produced history of the place. "The History of Ettington Park and The Shirley Family" I am looking at it right now. 12 pages, very detailed. Do we have that in the sources? Going over to the article now. Irondome (talk) 18:48, 28 February 2015 (UTC) 18:45, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Doesn't look like it. Please add as much as you can from it! We can then look into seeing if there's more on the architecture.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:51, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Suggest re Coffee and Rationalobserver

edit

Hi there,

Yesterday I made a suggestion on how Rationalobserver could work toward redeeming herself on Coffee's talk which Coffee endorsed and pinged Rationalobserver. See: Some good can come It involves a kindly offer by jbmurray to help Rationalobserver learn about evaluating sources for historical narrative writing, as she'd had brought up criticisms of "source integreity" on Talk:Saint Francis Receiving the Stigmata (van Eyck) and in various places about the same subject regarding Donner Party on multiple pages recently. I still think this is a good idea, especially given the effort jbmurray made in an effort to aid her. What do you think? EChastain (talk) 15:52, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

I think everybody really needs to realise that ultimately most of us are here for the same reason, and anything which distracts us from building it is is merely a distraction. Rationalobserver certainly needs to avoid commenting on other editors so much and focus on content, which I think you can see from a few of her articles she's quite capable of writing. But most of us here at times should probably follow that advice and not let certain things get to us so much. I don't know Coffee, nor do I have anything personal against him, but if he has a habit of imposing blocks without thought and feels happy doing that then at times he's going to get a reaction and encounter difficulty. Admittedly I even thought his block of Knowledgekid was unwarranted in that particular instance, however annoying he often is. I didn't see him say anything I thought was grossly uncivil or blockable in that particular instance (unless I missed something); he's said things previously I thought were trolling and blockable and he wasn't even warned.. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:39, 28 February 2015 (UTC)
