Dr. N. Gopalakrishnan (born November 20, 1955) is an Indian scientist, professor, philanthropist, philosopher and a great thinker, who worked with National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST) of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India, as a Senior Scientist from 1982 to 2008. After taking voluntary retirement from CSIR, he has been doing the charitable mission of learning and teaching Indian Heritage through the charitable organization named Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage (IISH) which is self-established in 1999. Since 2008 he is the full time Director of IISH[2] and delivering lectures in Indian and foreign Universities, IITs, organizations, media and academic institutions. Presently he is fully engaged in building a National Heritage Center, at Thrissur for learning and teaching Indian Heritage through establishing schools, colleges, libraries, video centers and so on.[3]
Early life and education
editDr. N. Gopalakrishnan was born on 20th November 1955 in a Hindu family at Thrippunithura near Ernakulam, Kerala, India to Narayanan Embrandiri and Satyabhama. He did his graduation and Post-graduation in St. Albert's College and Maharaja's College in Ernakulam respectively. He has done Post Graduation in M. Sc. Applied Chemistry, M. Sc. Pharmaceutical Chemistry and M.A. Industrial Sociology. Also he got his Ph. D in Biochemistry from Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad and D.Litt. in Sanskrit from Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, National Sanskrit University, Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.
Career
editFrom 1980 to 2008 he had been working in various fields such as a college lecturer in Cochin College, Kochi; as a Research Scholar in Regional Research Laboratory (RRL), Hyderabad; as a Scientist in Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India and as a visiting scientist in University of Alberta. In 1999 he established Indian institute of Scientific Heritage (IISH)which is a charitable organization for teaching Indian Heritage. Since then he is also working as Hon. Director of that organization. After 2008 he is fully engaged as Director of IISH and delivering lectures in Indian and foreign Universities, organization, media and academic institutions.
Present activities
editAs the director of Indian Institute of Scientific Heritage (IISH), he is undertaking many projects for learning and teaching the Scientific Heritage of India using ultra-modern scientific tools, logically, rationally and scientifically. He is now fully engaged in building a National Heritage Center, at Thrissur for learning and teaching Indian Heritage through establishing schools, colleges, libraries, video centers etc.

editHe has handled Projects sponsored by the organizations under Government of India such as Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian National Science Academy (INSA) and Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR).
In the media
editFor the last five years, he has been continuously giving lectures and writing articles about the Indian Heritage through electronic and print media. He has already given thousands of lectures through different medias and some of them are uploaded in the website of IISH [4]. Also IISH has its own WebTV [5] for broadcasting the lectures.
Awards and honours
editHe has got eight scientific research based national and International awards for R & D and five science popularization awards. He has six patents for scientific research and 50 publications. He has already published 110 books and hundreds of CDs, VCDs, and DVDs for popularization of scientific heritage of India. He is the only scientist who received the D.Litt. degree in India.
