Paulina (the War Spirit) was a Shoshoni (Saydocarah, Snake) war chief, born November 13, 1833 during the Renoid meteor storm.[1] His full siblings were Black Eagle, Bright Eyes, and Cactus Fruit. Wolf Dog was his half brother. He married Falling Star, who was born the same day, and their son was Buffalo Tail.[2] Wilson We Wa is Chief Paulina's great grandson.[3]

Paulina was Chief Has No Horse's lead war chief.[2] He signed the Treaty of 1855.[2] He was killed in 1867[2][4] by a shot to the hip, fired by either stagecoach line owner Howard Maupin or rancher James Clark, both of whom, with William Ragan,[5] had set off in April 1867 to hunt for stolen cattle and cattle theives. Neither knew they had killed the great Shoshoni war chief, but they scalped him and left him where he fell. Maupin got credit for the shooting at the time.[4]

Many Oregon land features spread across Paulina's home territory bear his names, including the community of Paulina, Paulina Basin where he was killed, Paulina Creek, Paulina Marsh, Paulina Lake, Paulina Prairie, the Paulina Mountains, the former Paulina National Forest and Paunina Station on the Cascade Line of the Southern Pacific Railroad .[5]
