Moving pages

Hi Edgar. Someone has made these three pages 3',4'-methylenedioxy-α-pyrrolidinopropiophenone • 4'-methyl-α-pyrrolidinopropiophenone • 4'-methoxy-α-pyrrolidinopropiophenone which is fine as those compounds have references, are notable etc, but the first letter of the name should be capitalised right? But when I tried to move the page it came up with an error message saying

"3',4'-methylenedioxy-α-pyrrolidinopropiophenone" cannot be moved to "3',4'-Methylenedioxy-α-pyrrolidinopropiophenone", because the title "3',4'-Methylenedioxy-α-pyrrolidinopropiophenone" is on the title blacklist.

I'm not sure what makes a title blacklisted but I don't see why this move would be unsuitable in these cases?Meodipt (talk) 06:53, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Because of a particularly persistent page-move vandal who used titles containing non-standard characters, MediaWiki:Titleblacklist was created. In my opinion, it is too broad in what types of moves it prevents and this has presented problems with moving chemistry articles that have Greek letters in the title. Merck

Why did you remove the information that I contributed to the Merck & Co page? If you took the time to research the material I posted then you would not have removed it. It's an insult to the personal experiences of many who have taken Proscar. The link that you tried to add has been blacklisted due to spamming. Trying to get around the blacklist by inserting spaces into the middle of the link and then instructing the reader to remove them is highly inappropriate. Also, adding negative material that is sourced only to a blacklisted website is not a good idea - it doesn't meet Wikipedia's policies on verifiability and reliable sources. Finally, even if good sources for the content can be found, I don't think it is all that relevant to the article anyway. Information about the side effects of a medicine would be better suited to the article about the medicine rather about the medicine's manufacturer. -- Ed (Edgar181) 22:34, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Secks Records evil offspring?

Hello - you deleted Secks Records (thank you very much!) but that user had a bunch of pages in his user pages, most of which also look bogus. Is it only articles in main space that can be deleted or do users subpages ever get deleted too? I know it is ok to use subpages for works in progress so perhaps the rule is to wait until it is made into an article. I'm rather new and happy to be instructed - thanks! Wikipedia's policies on the use of user pages can be found at WP:USER. In general, a user is allowed to user subpages to create potential articles that may not (yet) be suitable for the "main namespace". At first glance, this user seems to be trying to create self-promotional (rather than bogus) material on Wikipedia. If you feel the material on his user pages is not appropriate, you can nominate the pages for deletion at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion and the community will decide whether it should be deleted or not. To me, it seems this is probably borderline. If a user is generally constructive in their contributions to Wikipedia, these kinds of pages will generally be kept. If a user is here only to promote self-interests, these kinds of pages will likely get deleted. Dipropylamine

In this case, I think the N refers to the fact that two propyl groups are bonded to the nitrogen, not that the propyl groups are straight-chain (even though they are). I got that particular alternative name from Oxford's MSDS. shoy (reactions) 19:55, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

The text at Enox Biopharma was a word-for-word copy from www.enoxbiopharma.com. Wikipedia simply cannot accept such text (see WP:COPYVIO), and it is policy to immediately remove it. I deleted that page because it met criteria for speedy deletion outlined at WP:CSD#G10. I deleted it moments after it was created and only administrators have access to the deleted content. The user who created the page, User:Hotpants0996, has been warned and will be blocked from editing if the inappropriate behavior continues. The image File:MechanismAPE1.JPG does appear to accurately reflect the overall mechanism of the enzyme reaction as it is depicted in the Nature report referenced in the article. However, it does contain several small errors. For example, in the bottom left structure Asp 283 is missing a negative charge, His 309 is missing an H on the nitrogen, and the "OH₂" on the phosphate should be just "OH". -- Ed (Edgar181) 12:56, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

I deleted it because it met speedy deletion criteria by not making any assertion of notability. However, I have copied the content to User:Wikimaster2323/sandbox (presumably you're User:Wikimaster2323). If you think the subject of the article meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion (see WP:N) you can work on the article to get it at least readable, then copy it to Lego Rockband or another appropriate title. -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:45, 16 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi, It seems that you have compelely disregarded the vandalism made by this IP user and just focused on the part that a user can delete the warning! Did you disregard these vandalisms 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, even if you had a comment, don't you agree that you should have given your commment about it? Don't you think deleting those warnings simply means that you are just see above edits helpful to Wikipedia? This will give this user the idea that laws here are too lousy that one can get away with vandalism very easily? I did not argue whether one can remove messages from talk page or not, I reported this user due to vandalism and now see what is your response! You even deleted all the warning. This user should have been blocked and the messages should not have been removed. I appreciate if you could explain your action toward my request and removing the warnings from this user's talk-page. My page was deleted ?

Hello Ed,

I created a page as my first effort on Wikipedia - Confero - that I have just found out you have deleted. You have (correctly) noted that the content is similar to that on the dma.org.uk website. However, it is a desription of my Company that I wrote for the DMA website, so I have effectively re-used / modified my own created content to use here. Is that not allowable ?

If it is not allowable, can the page at least be accesible to me again so that I can modify it to show acceptable content. Do bear in mind that the 'Wikipedia' element of the content is 'unique' and I spent quite a bit of time working out how to put it together.

I deleted the article Confero because it was a duplicate of text found on a website that is marked as copyrighted. Regarding BCDMH

Greetings, Edgar:

I've been looking at the BCDMH article and I see that the article is internally inconsistent as to whether it's about 1-bromo-3-chloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin or 1-chloro-3-bromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin. If I can rely on this site I think the right answer is the 1-bromo-3-chloro- structure. However, it looks like your chemical structure diagram is 1-chloro-3-bromo-. So, (a) do you agree? and (b) if so, would you like to switch your diagram around or shall I? I probably would have gone ahead and done it by now, but I see your chemistry credentials are much higher than mine, so I thought I would make sure I'm not missing something first. :-) Andronicus (talk) 22:08, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Keyser Mangosteen's Article on Jack's Tours

Hello Edgar, You deleted my draft of an article on Jack's Tours citing self promotion as the reason. How is it possible that my page was deleted when Robert's Hawaii and Polynesian Adventures pages are still up? My article was based on Jack Miyashiro's life leading to a locally run transportation company with ties to the Big Island. I cited several sources for reference. It would appear that Wikipedia and it's editors are promoting specific companies when articles about other transportation companies, for example Robert's Hawaii, are still posted and supported. Your user page really should be used for information about you. That page came across as promotion of a business unrelated to Wikipedia, which is not permitted on user pages. I have restored the content of that page to User:Keyser.Mangosteen/sandbox where you can work on it. When it's ready, you can then move it to an appropriate title. You also might want to make sure the company meets Wikipedia's inclusion criteria outlined at WP:CORP. As for the articles on other Hawaiian tour companies, I'm not sure they meet Wikipedia's inclusion criteria, so they may end up being deleted at some point anyway. I am interested in composing an article about a notable individual named Doug French, and am wondering if the deleted article formerly at Doug French might have been about the same person. I believe I have sufficient reliable sources independent of the subject to compose a well-sourced article, but it seems appropriate to review the deleted article for any additional sources (or unsourced assertions that I can research) that might better enable me to write a reasonably broad encyclopedia article. Mistake?

Ethidium bromide article

I (38.112.100.65) am ashamed to admit it, but the ethidium bromide edit (obviously incorrect to anyone who has ever run a DNA gel) was made as part of a bet between a group of molecular biology graduate students, to see whether false information about a relatively specialist topic would be corrected in less than an hour. As it happened, you fixed it in about 45 minutes. Incorrect Image of Isopropyl Myristate

Tetracosane Geometrical Structure

Dear Edgar 181,

Could you please explain why the geometrical conformation of the shown tetracosane is bent, instead of being a straight chain alkane? What would be more precise way for description- solid state NMR shows that there's indeed energy difference between the methylene carbons in the middle. What is your reasoning for this?

I have drawn File:Tetracosane structure.png in such a way that it will fit in the available space in the infobox (a linear depiction would simply be too wide). In the solid state, the bent conformation will probably be slightly higher in energy than an entirely linear conformation, but not by much, so I think it is a fair compromise to balance the need for a reasonable depiction in the confines of the infobox. In the gas phase, or in aqueous solution, some bent conformations may actually be lower in energy due to the possibility of increased van der Waals interations. Having said all that, it doesn't really matter because two-dimensional skeletal formulas are not really intended to depict ground-state conformational information anyway. -- Ed (Edgar181) 13:07, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

But from the abstract, the statement, "The smallest n-alkane with a hairpin geometry that is lower in energy than the all-trans conformer occurs for C₂₂H₄₆" suggests that the current image at tetracosane is a good representation of a low (or perhaps lowest) energy conformation. -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:51, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

The reason given was "promotion of a business or organization unrelated to Wikipedia." I wasnt spamming, and I know Wikipedia is nofollow. I added my link to Prescription Drug because when you search No Prescription Drugs your site is on page one. So I figure people come to you frequently, and I have valuable information about prescription drugs. Artists Intel

Not much apparently. I am new to wikipedia and am learning about proper citations and article posting. I'm sorry if it did not include enough significance according to your arbitrary system. The article clearly is under construction considering you deleted it a few hours after it was posted. This is a non-profit community for artists not a "company" trying to make money. Thank you for helping the community grow by deleting an attempt to let others know about it. I don't think it contained any propaganda or was an eye sore to those who came across it. I would greatly appreciate it if you put the article back up and advised me on how to make it better. (in response to the deletion of Artists Intel page)

Actually, the decision whether or not to delete an article is not dependent on knowledge of art and music - it is simply the application of Wikipedia's guidelines. Wikipedia has inclusion guidelines that depend on notability (see WP:N for details). Articles about organizations (whether they are businesses, non-profits, or whatever) which do not make any assertions of notability are routinely deleted. If you think Artists Intel meets Wikipedia's guidelines for inclusion, I would be happy to provide you with a copy with the deleted text so that you can work on it some more. The guidelines say that a topic should have "significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject" in order to be included in Wikipedia. If you can find such sources and write an article based on what they say, then the article will probably be kept. re: 86.121.193.xxx spam/vandalism

Ed, thanks for your note on my page regarding my recent AIV report. The problem has continued; see these 3 July user contributions from yet another IP address. In some cases, the IP is just adding the www.plwha.org address (although with bad format); in others, the IP is deleting information from the article and inserting the address. I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but from the conversation on your talk page, I think I have an idea. If you wish to have older versions of the article which include your edits removed from the page history, this is generally not permissible. Wikipedia content is based on the licencing scheme known as GFDL. My understanding is that this license requires keeping track of individual contributions to the content. Deleting specific edits from the history of an article would violate the conditions of GFDL. If you really want to pursue this, I would recommend making a request at the administrator's noticeboard where others more familiar with the details of GFDL and of Wikipedia's policy may be able to give you a more certain answer. It was written clearly like an advertisement and therefore met criteria for deletion (see WP:CSD#G11). If you think Burrda meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, you can write a neutral article about the company, rather than an advertisment. Also, usernames that match the name of company are not permitted, so you should sign up with a different name. The article was deleted over a year ago by the Wikipedia:Proposed deletion process. The editor that nominated it for deletion used the reasoning, "Non-notable in both cases". Since there were no objections after five days, I deleted the article according to procedure. If you think either or both of the organizations described in the article meet Wikipedia's notability criteria for inclusion, the article can be undeleted upon request. For inclusion in Wikipedia, just containing information that is correct is not necessarily sufficient. Hi Edgar181: I'm not sure that a block of 48 hours is appropriate for this user, given his 'vandalism only' track-record and the fact that his previous block was for 104 hours. I've just checked a few more of that users diffs, and found this recent one which made an offensive racial attack on Ethiopians (the 'click, click, Click....' text refers to guttural phonemes of an African language; KFC is probably Kentucky Fried Chicken -hahaha, it was really not funny at all) . Wikipedia will be much better off without such miscreants creating work for other editors to fix in legitimate articles. Other admins have imposted significantly longer blocks for much less offensive behavior, and I'm requesting that a much lengthier block, preferably indefinite, by applied in this instance. I hate to say it, but vandalism from this IP address is actually quite low compared to what comes from many other IPs and the edits are likely to be the work of different individuals. For IP addresses with persistent vandalism, admins generally use an escalating series of blocks beginning with 24h and ranging up to one year. You'll generally see the series of blocks something like this: 24h --> 48h --> 1 week --> 1 month --> 6 months --> 1 year. IPs are not indefinitely blocked except in extreme cases. For a second block, I think 48 hours is reasonable, even though the first was longer. If the vandalism persists, longer blocks will be appropriate. If you notice vandalism coming from this IP after the block expires, please let me know and I will promptly re-block for longer. -- Ed (Edgar181) 15:29, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Moving pages

Hi Edgar181. Please could you move the page bromadol to BDPC? User:Nuklear has moved the page from its original IUPAC name, which I agree is rather long and unwieldy, to the name "bromadol", which while consistent with the naming of related compounds such as tramadol, is nevertheless derived from a name for the compound made up by a user on a drug chat website, and so is not really appropriate for the page name on wikipedia. I advocate using the abbreviation BDPC for the page as this is what is used in the scientific literature. Meodipt (talk) 22:28, 10 August 2009 (UTC)

No the compound has never been marketed. To complicate matters, several members from the mentioned drug chat websites contacted Dr Lednicer, who appears to be slightly bitter that the compound he worked so hard on was never marketed by Upjohn, and was happy to give his blessing to "bromadol" as a name for the compound. However just because the inventor of the compound agrees its a nice name doesn't make it official enough to be the name on wikipedia in my opinion. On the other hand I did name jimscaline after its unofficial name used in the lab that invented it, in preference to its formal chemical name, but in that case the compound didn't have an "official" abbreviation like how this one does. Splenda

This is not a joke. However, for some odd reason, it is deleted every time it is put in - although it is verifiable in hundreds of online testimonials and in some academic journals.

Do you have a problem with this? Why? After having explosive gas for weeks bc I was eating low-sugar ice cream, I seriously thought I was going to have to see a doctor and had something very wrong with me. If you have access to ALL of the academic journals, then you would see it is supported in peer reviewed publications. I can only get some of the abstracts when lesser known journals are involved.[2]

I suppose it doesnt really matter anyway since anyone can just google "splenda gas" and read what they need to. I still think the article should reflect reality, however...and it's not "original research" just bc it's in a 3rd tier journal. Wikipedia policy requires that information can be backed up with reliable sources, and this policy does not include blogs among reliable sources. I read all the documents linked to in your Google scholar search, but none of them contain any claims that Splenda and/or sucralose cause the problems that you suggest, only that sugar alcohols cause those problems. None of the linked documents are academic journals either. If you can provide me with the details of the references in peer reviewed scientific journals that you are referring to, I can probably get full text copies of them and include the relevant information in the article. -- Ed (Edgar181) 01:42, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Last week you blocked 76.172.176.45 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). It was his second (at least) block for disruptive editing. He's back, and he has repeated many of the same edits that caused the issue the last two times. He needs some attention. I blocked the username Tweedshireecho (talk · contribs) and deleted the page User:Tweedshireecho because usernames that match the name of an organization the user is trying to promote are not permitted. Oxone

On the Potassium peroxymonosulfate page the chemical formula is depicted incorrectly. According to Dupont the potassium ion is bonded to the hydroxyl group and not the peroxy group.
