editThe Miami County Sheriff Office is a small county located north of Dayton Ohio, The central location for the sheriff's department is in the county seat of Troy. The first reference of a county sheriff was in 1807 With Sherriff Stephen Dye. The current Sherriff of Miami County is Dave Duchak.

The Sherriff is an elected position voted by the public which serves on 4-year terms. The sheriff is in charge of the Miami County Courts, the Miami County Jail, as well as serving law enforcement Duties on the road.
The Chief Deputy is the second highest ranking officer under the Sherriff. They are to assist the Sheriff.
The 3rd in Command in the Captain is in charge of specific sub-departments of the Sherriff Office. currently, there are 3 captains. One is in charge of the jail, the courts, and the road deputies
Following the Captains are the Lieutenants who are in charge of specialized units inside the departments such as the SRT
The last Command staff in the line are the sergeants they are the immediate supervisors of the deputies in their specific division.

Specialized Divisions
editThere are 7 divisions inside the Sherriff Office[1]
The first division is the Civil Section. The Civil Section/Court Services is responsible for handling, maintaining, and executing all summons, writs, subpoenas, executions, and other orders issued to the Sheriff by the Court of Common Pleas, Court of Appeals, Juvenile Court, and Probate Court. This division also processes writs and subpoenas from state officials and boards, as well as official documents from other states directed to the Sheriff.
The second division is the Jail. The jail is in charge of all correctional and rehabilitation in Miami County. Miami County has two different jails. One is in downtown Troy in the Safety Building. This facility is where federal prisoners are being held on felony charges. The second facility is on 25A near the Government complex. This is where the non-felony prisoners are being held on misdemeanor charges. The correctional facility also has a juvenile jail, where young prisoners are held if the juvenile court deems they need to be held inside a prison facility.
The third division is Crash Reconstruction. The crash reconstruction team is highly trained and skilled qualified to reconstruct accidents, they can reconstruct automobiles, commercial trucks, farm equipment, all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrian accidents. Crash Reconstruction involves analyzing physical evidence at the scene to establish conditions before, during, and after the impact, as well as the area of impact. The process includes inspecting the scene and taking measurements using a Sokkia Total Station for forensic mapping. All evidence is photographed and examined to help determine the cause of the crash.
The fourth division is the investigations or detectives division. The Miami County Sheriff's Office detective section consists of one detective lieutenant overseeing the unit, two detectives handling general assignments, which cover all major crimes except narcotics, two detectives focused on narcotics investigations, and one detective assigned to Miami County Job & Family Services under a contract. Detectives carry out investigative tasks such as gathering information and collecting evidence, primarily for felony cases like sex offenses, violent crimes, drug-related offenses, and death investigations. They are responsible for writing detailed reports and maintaining accurate records, which are crucial for their testimony in court. Detectives undergo specialized training in areas such as interviewing and interrogation, crime scene forensics, financial crimes, and other investigative techniques.
The fifth division is the K9 Division. There is currently only one K9 assigned in the Sheriff's Office. K-9 Vello is assigned to Deputy Ryan Thobe. Vello is a purebred German Shepherd certified in patrol (tracking) and narcotics detection through the State of Ohio. Besides their regular shift duties, Deputy Thobe and Vello are also available on call to assist any law enforcement officer in the Miami Valley who requires their services.
The sixth division in the Specialized Response Team SRT. This team responds when a criminal is holding hostages, barricaded inside a building, or is armed, and a more tactical response is needed to apprehend the subject. This unit is highly trained in more complex weapons that regular deputies do not carry, this SRT team also has access to more protective equipment to ensure their safety and the safety of others. The Miami County Sheriff's Office has a tactical armored vehicle that is deployed in situations involving armed suspects, when tactical entry is necessary, or to assist individuals who are barricaded or in need of rescue.
The seventh division is the School Resource Division/Program. There are currently 5 School resource officers (SRO). School resource officers educate students on a range of topics, including bullying, self-esteem, peer pressure, and Internet safety. They also collaborate with school staff to identify and address issues within the student body, such as risky behaviors or harmful trends. Additionally, school resource officers act as intermediaries between the school districts and the Sheriff’s Office, focusing on conflict resolution and helping to foster a positive and secure learning environment. Funding for the program is provided jointly by Bradford Schools, Milton-Union Exempted Village Schools, Miami-East Local Schools, Bethel Local Schools, the Upper Valley Career Center, and the Sheriff’s Office.[2]
