The history of skyscrapers in the world begins with the construction of the ten-story Home insurance building in Chicago, which was completed in 1884-1885.Today the height of this building may not be considered as impressive but at that time it was the tallest skyscraper.Currently the tallest building in the world is Taipei 101, in Taipei, Taiwan. It stands at 509 meters and have 101 floors. But two months later Burj Dubai which is currently topped out in Dubai, UAE will the tallest building in the world in all four categories issued by CTBUH.

History of increment in height of skyscrapers

edit

After the construction of Home insurance building, which was built in 18th century, the incremantation in the height of skyscrapers begin with the construction of Empire state building, in New york city.Empire state building was the first building in the world that had broken the 300 meters barrier and 100th floor. The building stands at 381 meters and have 102 floors. The next tallest skyscraper was World trade centre, which was completed in 1972 it stands at 417 meters(tower north), and 415 meters(tower south), it adds 36 meters to the height of Empire state building, but soon after two years Sears tower was built in 1974 in Chicago, stands at 442 meters with 108 floors this skyscraper adds 25 meters to the height of World trade centre, Petronas towers adds another 10 meters to the height of Sears tower , the twin towers stands at 452 meters, with each tower have 88 floors. In 2003 the construction of Taipei 101 has brought the height of skyscrapers to the new level, it stands at 509 meters and have 101 floors. It adds almost 59 meters to the height of Petronas towers. However, the Burj Dubai which is currently topped out in Dubai, UAE, stands at 818 meters, and have a total of 189 floors out of which 162 floors will be occupied.Upon its opening in September, 2009 Burj Dubai will add 309 meters to the height of Taipei 101.Burj dubai will break several skyscraper records when it will opens officially.Burj Dubai is almost twice in height of Empire state building.Burj dubai has broken the record of worlds tallest free standing structure on earth, when fully completed Burj Dubai will be the tallest structure on earth ever built.

Increment in the height of Skycrapers in future

edit

The average height of 100 tallest buildings has been steadily increasing, by 2010 this average height will have jumped to 349 meters , up from 286 meters in 2000[1], it means that there will an increase of 22 % in the average height of 100 tallest skyscrapers within a decade. This is almost double the increase from 197 meters to 229 meters that occurred between 1970 and 1980,which was the second largest increase in average building height across a decade[2]. When Burj dubai will be fully completed it will make a 60 % leap in height increase over the previous worlds tallest[3]. As now adays there is the Skyscraper boom in the world, from 2006 to 2010 the combined height of the 100 tallest skyscrapers will have been increased by over 5 km or 5000 meters (16,405 ft), and 59 of the worlds 100 tallest skyscrapers will have been built in 2010[4]. By the end of 2007 there were 34 supertall buildings in the world, by the end of 2010 this will have more than doubled to 82 supertall buildings all around the world[5].

  • NOTE:The CTBUH defines a building as a Supertall if it is 300 meters or greater[6].

History of supertall skyscrapers by location

edit

Since the early skyscraper boom which had takes place in North america, the significant number of skyscrapers of north america have dominated the 100 tallest buildings in the world, In 1930, 99 % of tallest 100 were located in North America with 51 % in New york city alone.By 2010 this percentage will have been dramatically dereased to only 22 % and 5 % respectively[7].However the dominancy of the skyscrapers of North america is rapidly decreasing due to the brust of construction of skyscrapers in other parts of the world, specially in Asia.In Asia there has been a dramatic increase in the number of supertall skyscrapers since the construction of Petronas Twin Towers. The construction of supertall skyscrapers in Asia and Middle Eastt has been dramaticlly increased.Today 60 buildings out of the worlds 100 tallest, are located in Asia and Middle east and 8 buildings out of 10 of the worlds 100 tallest are in Asia.

Increment in Usage of Skycrapers

edit

Since the skyscraper boom, the significant number of skyscrapers in the world accomodated predominantly an office function for decades. From 1930 to 2000 the percentage of office towers was never below 86 %, by 2010 it will be down to just 46 %[8].In 2010 less than half of the 100 tallest buildings in the world will be office towers, with the majority instead accomodating residential and mixed use function[9]. Today only four buildings accomodated an office function out of 10 tallest buildings in the world and 28 buildings out of 50 tallest in the world accomodated an office function[10]. The building usage as hotel and residential is on the lower side, as there are only few supertall skyscrapers which are in the 100 tallest skyscrapers in the world. But in future several supertall residential towers will be built globally, some notable skyscrapers , are Pentominium, Chicago Spire, Princess Tower, Marina 106, and Marina 101. There few supertall Hotel skyscrapers in the world, Burj Al Arab, and Rose Tower are the two only supertall, while the under construction Emirates Park Towers will become the tallest supertall hotel skyscraoer in the world.

  • NOTE:The CTBUH defines mixed use tall building as containing two or more functions, where each of the function occupy at least 15 % of the towers total floor area[11].
