Singer-Songwriter
NUBIA DEVI

Nubia Devi is a Spanish-British singer songwriter originally born in Spain. Nubia moved to South London to pursue her career in music, attending Point Blank by Middlesex University where she studied Songwriting and Production. Her style of music fuses her British and Spanish heritage, with a Flamenco-pop, alternative RnB sound. After living in India, Nubia’s artistry took on a deeper expression, incorporating sounds, rituals and inspiration from Hindu Vedas, which she seamlessly incorporates into her modern, art pop flavour.

Nubia herself is a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar and keyboard. She writes and sings the vocals to all of her music. She is currently working on her first EP ‘Back to Basics’ in which she explores her spiritual journey, with lyrics spanning themes of freedom, feminism, duality and embodiment. The EP consists of 6 tracks, written in India and recorded in London, carrying a unique blend of Flamenco rhythms, Hindu mantras and instrumentation, and dreamy vocals - creating Nubia's signature sound.

EARLY LIFE

edit

Nubia grew up listening to her father playing the guitar and writing songs and credits him as her initial inspiration in the world of creating music. From a young age she accompanied her parents travelling across Europe and living in different countries. At the age of 16 she took up playing the drums and guitar and at 18 she took her first vocal session and began exploring songwriting. After a traumatic life incident Nubia stopped playing music. She pursued a successful career in the fashion industry, working with top names in Spain, Italy, France and UK. However despite her success she continued to feel drawn to make music. In 2018 Nubia left her career in fashion and focused solely on fulfilling the desire that had lived inside her since she was a child. Making a fresh start, Nubia applied for and studied Songwriting and Production at Point Blank by Middlesex University, thereby beginning her musical career again.

MUSIC INSPIRATION

edit

Nubia cites M.I.A. (rapper), Björk, Nirvana (band) and Incubus (band) as her longstanding inspirations. Her favourite Flamenco bands are Los Delinqüentes, Muchachito Bombo Infierno and Paco de Lucía - bands which incorporate folk and other genres within the flamenco sound. Cacao ceremonial music and traditional Bollywood songs also inspire Nubia’s eclectic sound. One of her biggest inspirations is the first song she ever listened to was ‘Orinoco Flow’ by Enya, which she heard playing from her father’s vinyl player.
