Incorporation
editLew Hahn organized the company in December, 1928, creating a holding company for the purpose of acquiring and operating large, well-known department stores in the United States. <<reference>>. After going public in early 1929, twenty-two stores were acquired with the criteria of annual sales between $1 million and $10 million with a record of achieving good earnings. Their selection was because they were deemed to be "the most important in their respective sections of the country."
