ARK. Raja Raja is a visionary figure in the South Indian film industry, celebrated for his contributions as a writer, director, and producer. As the Founder and Board Director of the All India Film Chamber of Commerce, since 2020, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of Indian cinema.[1].

Early Life and Education

Born in the serene village of Koradacheri in the Tanjore district, Raja Raja was raised in Kidaripatti, near Azhagar Kovil, Madurai. His humble upbringing instilled in him a deep appreciation for storytelling. He completed his schooling at Government High School, Kidaripatti, before embarking on his remarkable journey into cinema[2].

Personal Life

Raja Raja is a family man, married to Ms. Shagima. Together, they have two children, a daughter named Raziya and a son, Rafin Raja. In addition to his passion for filmmaking, he enjoys reading, swimming, and engaging in sports like cricket and kabaddi. His personal interests reflect his vibrant personality and love for life.

Career Beginnings

Raja Raja’s entry into the film industry is a story of perseverance and determination. In 1987, after a disagreement with his father, he left his hometown with nothing but hope, moving to Chennai to seek a better future. With limited resources, he took on jobs in tea shops and hotels to support himself. His fortunes changed when he met Mr. Mohammed Ali, who introduced him to the world of cinema. Starting as a film translator, Raja Raja worked on translating films into Tamil[3]. His dedication led him to become an assistant director in 1994. By 2002, he had evolved into a full-fledged writer, with his first major work being The 3 Just Thing, a Tamil-dubbed English film. Over the years, he penned dialogues for more than 70 Telugu films that were dubbed into Tamil, including notable titles like Andaru Dongale Dorikite (2004) and Alibabavum 9 Thirudargalum, which starred Prabhu Deva. His role as both writer and producer for the latter demonstrated his versatility[4].

Directorial Debut

In 2006, Raja Raja took a bold step forward, making his directorial debut with the Tamil film Illavatam and the Telugu film Seethakoka Chiluka. These films featured a talented ensemble cast, including Mr. Navdeep, Ms. Sheela, Ms. Suhasini, Mr. Maniratnam, and Mr. Vijay Kumar[5]. His transition from writing to directing was seamless, and his projects were well-received, showcasing his ability to bring compelling stories to the screen. Despite his success as a director, his passion for writing remained unwavering, leading him to work on over 300 Telugu-to-Tamil dubbing projects[6].

Contributions to Cinema

ARK. Raja Raja is affectionately known as the "Dubbing King" of South Indian cinema, a title bestowed upon him by veteran producer Mr. RB Chowdhary[7]. His influence in the dubbing sector is unparalleled, and his dedication to improving the quality of dubbed films has left a lasting impact on the industry. He has also been instrumental in nurturing new talent, providing opportunities to over 600 writers, and helping to cultivate the next generation of filmmakers[8]. He also serves as the Director of All India Film Actors Foundation since 2021 which is registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) and as the Managing Director of the Selvandhan Film Factory.

Achievements

Under the banner of the Badnarakal Films Productions many of his dubbed movies were released. Some of them are:

  • Ehiruthai Puli with Ramcharan from Telugu to Tamil in 2007[9]
  • A love story with Nagarjun and Nayanthara, Telugu to Tamil in 2013[10]
  • Jameen which had the cast of Nani, Bindu Madhavi, was dubbed by ARK in 2013 from Telugu to Tamil[11]

He is the first Assistant Director who graduated to become a writer in 2002 and wrote 70 movies from Telugu to Tami[12]l. Nenja Mellam PalaVanam – this movie was dubbed from Telugu to Tamil in 2020.

He was a very successful Producer as well and Arya, Samantha and Mahesh Babu worked under his Production. He also played a vital role as a Distributor for all these Telegu dubbed movies[13].

His first Tamil movie was an action thriller and indulged in romantic and multilingual movies from 2006[14]. Till date he has dubbed more than 300 Tamil movies and won 20 awards. The movie, Magadheera, was released as the Tamil dubbed version of a Telegu film from Yeradu[15].

He also tried his hands in writing the lyrics of a song produced by the Rasimedia Production. ARK Raja Raja introduced 800 lyricists to the industry like Arun Bharathi, Avadi, and S. Varalakshmi etc[16]. He also worked as a writer in 300 movies from Telegu to Tamil which were enacted by the top heroes like Mahesh Babu, Chiranjeev, Allu Arjun, Nagarjun and many more.

He directed movies like Seetha, Gopi, Chilaka in Telegu and Ilavattam in Tamil[17]. In his two decades in the film industry he has done about 68 Keshot movies and directed about 115 movies. He also excelled as Distributor of 80 Tamil movies of the top heroes like Vijay, Ajith, Vishal etc.

ARK produced 115 movies in other languages of the top heroes[18]. Presently he has the satellite rights of 400 movies and non exclusive rights (can both buy & sell) of 3000 movies and recently he has spoken very highly about the OTT platform and its advantages[19].

He is known for blending realism with commercial cinema, often using his films to explore socially relevant themes. His works frequently tackle issues like [social issues, e.g., class disparity, gender inequality, politics], but are always rooted in human emotions, making them relatable to a wide audience[20]. His directorial style is characterized by strong character development, gripping screenplays, and powerful dialogues. He continues to work on innovative projects that push the boundaries of Tamil cinema[21]
