Traditions at Ohio State University Ohio State has many traditions, and many are still being upheld today. School Colors In 1878, three students voted to choose Ohio State University's school colors. They voted on scarlet and gray because the colors were pleasing to the eye, and they were unique from other schools ("Traditions," 2020). School Mascot Created in 1965, students Ray Bourhis and Sally Huber created a mock mascot named Brutus using paper-mâché. They debuted him on October 30 at the homecoming football game against Minnesota. The name Brutus was chosen via unanimous vote after the game. The paper-mâché mascot was ruined in the rain, so the students recreated Brutus out of fiberglass. Brutus has attended every OSU athletic game since ("Traditions, "2020). Buckeye Leaf Decals Alumni and comic strip artist Milton Caniff designed the school's decals in 1950. These leaves represent the Buckeye Tree to show the strength and sturdiness of the students of Ohio State University. The first leaves did not appear on the football helmets until 1967. These leaves were given to the football players for their outstanding plays on the field, a tradition upheld today ("Traditions, "2020). The Gold Pants Club In 1934, Coach Francis Schmidt and the Ohio State football team played against Michigan and won against Michigan 34-0. Coach Schmidt was asked about winning the game against Michigan, and that is when the coach commented, "Michigan football players put their pants on one leg at a time the same as everyone else." This is how the gold pants club came as a tradition. This a gold pants charm that is given to all football players who play and win against Michigan. The charms have the player's initials, the date of the game, and the score of the game ("Traditions, "2020). Ohio State University Band The Ohio State University Band is known as TBDBITL (The Best Damn Band in the Land). The band did not form until 1879 as an all brass military band. At the time, the band was known as "The Pride of the Buckeyes." The band is known for "Script OHIO," where each member of the band spells out Ohio. Script Ohio is performed before the game, halftime, and after home games. Each time Script Ohio is performed, a senior sousaphone player gets the honor to dot the "I" of Ohio. Bob Hope and Woody Hayes were some to dot the "I" that were not band members ("Traditions, "2020). School Song OSU's school song is "Carmen Ohio," which was written in 1902 by Fred Cornell after the football team lost to Michigan in a devastating 86-0 shutout. The Ohio State University Glee Club first performed Carmen Ohio on December 11, 1903. The word "Carmen" means "song or poem." The title of the song means "Song of Ohio or Ohio's Song." Ohio State also has two fight songs Across the Field and Buckeye Battle Cry ("Songs of OSU, "2015).
