WikiCup 2012 July newsletter
We're approaching the beginning of 2012's final round. Pool A sees Cwmhiraeth (submissions) as the leader, with 300 points being awarded for the featured article Bivalvia, and Pool B sees Grapple X (submissions) in the lead, with 10 good articles, and over 35 articles eligible for good topic points. Pool A sees Muboshgu (submissions) in second place with a number of articles relating to baseball, while Pool B's Ruby2010 (submissions) follows Grapple X, with a variety of contributions including the high-scoring, high-importance featured article on the 2010 film Pride & Prejudice. Ruby2010, like Grapple X, also claimed a number of good topic points; despite this, not a single point has been claimed for featured topics in the contest so far. The same is true for featured portals.
Currently, the eighth-place competitor (and so the lowest scorer who would reach the final round right now) has scored 332, more than double the 150 needed to reach the final round last year. In 2010, however, 430 was the lowest qualifying score. In this competition, we have generally seen scores closer to those in 2010 than those in 2011. Let's see what kind of benchmark we can set for future competitions! As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Speedy deletion declined: Blonds (band)
Hello Σ. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Blonds (band), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Band is listed at allmusic.com, indicates importance or significance. Thank you. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 21:49, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Deletion of West philly white bulls
Hello,
Thank you for your message.
This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because... Hello, I along with a friend created this article last night. It is our first article on Wikipedia. I am not sure why it was deleted, as we are new to wikipedia, but please give us time to finish it. The reason seems to be: "No explanation of the subject's significance (real person, animal, organization, or web content" I think an operating gang in Philadelphia is of pretty large significance. There are several news articles and criminal dockets relating to the gang itself, as well as its members. There is no doubt the organization is "real", but you will have to give me more than a day to ferret everything out and provide proper sources. I have been hesistant to use the names of the individuals involved because they have ongoing pending criminal charges and I am not sure that those belong in the public domain, as you are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. Please put the page back up so that we may finish it. I worked very hard on that page for hours and you just delete it. Just because you have never heard of them does not mean they do not exist or are not significant. If you lived in West Philadlephia, and you do not, you would know of them. You must give us time to finish it. I think the subject was pretty well covered, we talked about their territory, activities, and several members, although we did not use their names. Also a lot of information we receive was from a confidential informant who helped us, as this is an except from our thesis for cultural anthropology, would you like us to use our confidential informants name to prove the reality of the organization to you? I think you too hastily deleted this page and I would like it re-instated.
The organization is responsible for a large amount of narcotics trafficking, assaults, robberies, and gang activity in West Philadelphia. Several members are currently in Curran-fromhold Correctional Facility (CFCF) in Philadelphia awaiting trial for a long series of charges. Also their activities have lead to many deaths in West Philadlephia. Large scale narcotics trafficking, assaults, armed robberies, and deaths are of significane I think and those who live in west philadelphia and hear the name of the West Philly White Bulls should have the opportunity to research more on who runs their neighborhood. Thank You for reading this. I will be adding verifiable sources and news articles in the near future, but you must give us time to complete it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Phillynews (talk • contribs) 02:44, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
- First off, I agree that it would be wise to avoid using their names until a verdict has been reached.
- The most basic standard for inclusion in Wikipedia is not whether or not it exists, but notability - that is, whether or not the subject has received attention from the press or other reliable sources. Wikipedia is not a place to establish one's notability, and so an article that does not assert significance or importance can be speedily deleted.
- If you would like the article's text given to you so you may work on it, send a message to Reaper Eternal (talk · contribs), who deleted it. →Σσς. 07:54, 12 August 2012 (UTC)
You deleted a new entry I was building
Last week you placed a quick delete on a new entry I was assembling. After you placed the notice of pending delete I quickly edited it to be even less promotional minded, but it was still removed the very next day.
I was basing the content in the new entry I was building on another similar company who has a long-standing entry on Wikipedia. I would like to start this process again. Can you please let me know what specific information you would like to see this time so that you do not deem it to be overly commercial?
Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dalpern (talk • contribs) 06:54, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
Why my article is selected for speed deletion?

- The deletion has not occurred yet, so if an admin disagrees with my tag, they will remove it. →Σσς. 04:37, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Actually, the article was a blatant copyvio ;) Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 07:07, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- I suppose this means either that the copyvio detector bots should run more consistently, or I'm getting used to the safety net those bots gave! →Σσς. 21:31, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

FYI
Obtund has been advised several times to consider not repeatedly requesting user rights at this time and/or commenting on admins' decisions. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 04:18, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- I've seen this kind of behaviour recently, too. Should someone should bring it up at VPPR, to clarify? →Σσς. 04:52, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- Not worth making a drama about. There has been a lot of it recently though, but probably mainly generated by the increased activity here and here. There is a long discussion here and although it wasn't by any means an RfC, the general consensus seem to be clear. This may help to stabilise things. Unfortunately, the one self-appointed 'clerk' who has actually been doing an excellent job of keeping the page tidy and archived for a long time has stupidly gone and got himself blocked again for a couple of weeks. Job for you? Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 07:02, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, the archiving is in fact done by a bot, but due to the current situation, it's a bit backlogged at the moment. So there's nothing for a human to do there. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 11:59, 18 August 2012 (UTC)
- The archiving is not done by a bot, but actually by a userscript. I can see this as a bot task, though.
and also as an opportunity to steal more edits from those humans→Σσς. 19:32, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Your header on this page
Alt+228 gives me "õ" on my Windows 7 machine... definitely not a sigma. — This, that, and the other (talk) 11:17, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
- Strange. According to this, it should have been a sigma. Can you type chcp in the command prompt, to see if it prints "Active code page: 437"? →Σσς. 19:01, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
- I'm on code page 850. This is probably as a result of the fact that I have French langage support set up, although I don't know how the default gets changed. It's worth noting that your instruction will work for only some (few?) Windows users. — This, that, and the other (talk) 07:36, 23 August 2012 (UTC)
- I have discovered another way to enter a sigma on Windows. Enable the Chinese keyboard (I'm using Traditional, Taiwan) and switch to it. If all goes well, you should be able to enter a sigma by typing `u03a3 followed by a space. →Σσς. 03:15, 24 August 2012 (UTC)
