Sichuan Medical University (四川医科大学) (SMU for short)is a medical university in Luzhou City, Sichuan Province, China. Formerly known as Luzhou Medical College, the medical school was founded in 1951 and is a government school recognized by both the Chinese government and is the second largest medical school in Sichuan Province.
As of 2013, there are 13,416 students study in the university, including 294 international students, 503 postgraduate students, 11,876 undergraduate students.
The university has 16 departments with 18 majors and 9 special directions, among which there are 8 key provincial majors. The university library has 120 electronic reading rooms with over 1 million books and journals. The teaching buildings cover 162,334 square meters, the dormitories, 84,227 square meters, the canteens, 11,600 square meters, and the stadium, 69,386 square meters, including 1 swimming pool. The university has 3 affiliated hospitals, which are: the affiliated hospital of SMU, the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of SMU and the Dental Hospital of SMU. There is also a nursing school, a pharmaceutical factory, 7 non-subordinating hospitals and 56 teaching hospitals which total 20,000 clinical beds. The Affiliated Hospital of SMU is one of the biggest and most advanced hospitals in Southwest China. It has 1,500 staff and 60 departments with 6447 clinical beds.
