Hackity hack hack

An IP proposed a very interesting solution at WP:VPT#Way to validate Wikidata entities/QIDs in Lua?... Would you want to create such a module, perhaps using one of recommended & self-explanatory names in the phab ticket, and producing some of the desired functionality (i.e. returning "nil" instead of "invalid entity")? Taxonbar sandbox

Sorry, I was going to try out something in Module:Taxonbar/sandbox, but I see that you are already working on some changes to the template.

When the name of a botanical infraspecies is displayed in a taxonbar, as for example at Melaleuca fulgens subsp. steedmanii, it is not correctly formatted – connecting terms like "subsp.", "var.", "f.", should not be italicized. The function Module:TaxonItalics.italicizeTaxonName(name, linked) can be used to correctly italicize (and standardize) a taxon name, with, in this case, linked being false (the function is used by some of the {{Taxon list}} set of templates). Ok, thanks. It's a simple change that I made and it appears to work fine – see the sandbox output at Template:Taxonbar/testcases#Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus var. lanatus) and Template:Taxonbar/testcases#Melaleuca fulgens subsp. steedmanii. However, it doesn't go far enough:

1. Row titles for taxon ranks higher than genus should not be italicized. This requires finding the rank from the Wikidata item and choosing whether to italicize or not.
2. The function I used was written for a different purpose and doesn't deal with the few cases where the taxon name is disambiguated – the parenthesized disambiguator should never be italicized.

(2) is easy to fix. I assume (1) can be fixed, but I'm not familiar with the API to Wikidata. Peter coxhead (talk) 23:13, 12 February 2018 (UTC)

@Peter coxhead: I put in a few lines that grab the rank and store it in parentArgs['rank'..f] at line 188. This is stored as the Wikidata ID for the rank (e.g. "species" is "Q7432"). If you want to recover the name of the rank, you would do mw.wikibase.label(parentARgs['rank'..f]). This probably isn't the cleanest way to store this data, but it's there as an example. --Ahecht (TALK

Thanks. I had hoped that Wikidata (being a database system) would have defined the sequence of allowed values of wikidata:Property:P105, since taxon ranks form an ordered sequence (albeit slightly differently ordered for each nomenclature code). It's done here in Module:Autotaxobox, but the input is the Latin term, not the English one, so it will be a bit tedious to decide whether the Wikidata rank is at or below the level of genus, which is where we start italicizing.

Tests suggest that the non-italicization of connecting terms works correctly, so I'll move this to the live version. Peter coxhead (talk) 09:42, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

It's both simpler and much more complex than that.

• We only need to list the ranks from genus downwards; any rank not in this list isn't italicized.
• However, it's necessary to distinguish botanical and zoological uses of the rank of section, as the automated taxobox system does by using sectio and zoosectio, because botanical sections are below genus and zoological ones above, so the italicization varies. As far as I can tell, Wikidata doesn't distinguish the rank names, so this information would have to be acquired from some other bit of data.
• The virus code has quite different rules for the use of italics, which is supposed to be followed here (see Wikipedia:WikiProject Viruses/Guidelines#Italics and capitalization) although in practice it isn't always. All ranks, except the top level Groups, are italicized for viruses. So it's necessary to detect whether a genus or species is a virus or not.
• Minor point, perhaps, but Wikidata doesn't seem to deal with the use of "Candidatus" in the bacteria code of nomenclature – see Candidatus Carsonella ruddii and (QCARSONELLA RUDDII).

Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

Qhm performance problems

Your adding {{Qhm}} to a number of football related templates has made their performance worse, so much so that it’s pushed three articles into Category:Pages with script errors – Iraq national football team results, Costa Rica national football team results and 2017–18 UEFA Europa League qualifying phase and play-off round. @JohnBlackburne: I'll see what I can do to optimize the templates, but even without my changes, Iraq national football team results was using 2,003,857/2,097,152 of the post-expand include size. Splitting List of ... standings articles

Some of the List artictles are failing to render the final/newest standings templates, due to the large quantity of templates -as you noted. The solution is not to inline the content (cause forking where updates from the standings template to no longer automatically reflected in the List articles). We can instead split the List articles by year ranges as is already done for some of the conferences, see Category:NCAA Division I FBS football standings. YOU say I didn't give a reliable source so you had the damned cheek to remove my additions, In the slot for the purpose I SPECIFICALLY SAID that I saw the damned fight myself years ago, I saw both fights, and I followed Pazienza. I was thinking about Paz and was watching a few of his fights on Youtube. Eventually the Rosenblatt fight turned up. I remember every bit of it. But before I made the blasted additions I saw both fights over again on Youtube just before I made the corrections.

So what the blazes more reliable a source can I find than my own acute vision and active brain. If you can think of one you are indeed a miracle man. I have made several corrections in Wiki over time and every single one is something I saw myself and absolutely know about it.

As well as seeing your so welcome message, I saw that several of my past corrections had been removed. Every correction was true and valid. You editors or censors or whatever the hell you call yourselves, have a damned nerve.

@Neil OHanlon: I see that Google Translate translates the term as "pushed through", but every other source, including every German-to-English dictionary I could find, says it's "guided through" (or something similar such as "funneled" or "channeled" through). The word may have acquired a colloquial meaning of "pushed" because of its use during the holocaust, but there are no sources that indicate that it had that meaning at the time. --Ahecht (TALK

Lua variable table key question

I'm working on something and am a bit stuck, can't find anything online except basic table tutorials/guides/etc., maybe you can help?

Given this nested table map, I want to use a variable in place of the hard-coded "Fish" in output1, since map will contain other Fish-level entries that I don't want to explicitly search for/iterate over. output2 is effectively pseudo-code, but it's what I'm trying to achieve.

The long answer is that Lua has two ways of addressing table elements. The standard way is using brackets (e.g. map[g]["year"]["parent1"]["century"]), but if your address is a simple string, Lua provides the map.Fish.year.parent1.century syntax as syntactic sugar. Brett Kimberlin here. I have been dealing with the WP legal department about my page for the past two months because footnotes 8, 9 and 13 are dead links, and footnotes 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 11, 17, 19, 20, 22, 23, 25, 26 and 32 are bogus. I sent Mr. Jacob Rogers all the pages from the book that are cited for information referenced in the article to show that none of them matched. So he suggested that I go into the page and remove them all and correct the page to make it more objective and current. Here is a copy of his email and the email I sent to him so you can see where I am coming from. And below that is the list of the bogus cites. I am a living person and this WP page was started by alt-right nuts who hate my progressive activities. I have asked that the page be removed but was overruled by volunteers who did nothing about the dead links or the bogus cites. Mr. Rogers noted that my request was treated cursorily. Why is it that WP publishes the most scandalous and highly charged information?

Please remove the page or at least, make the changes I made.

Dear Mr. Kimberlin, Thank you for sending the follow-up information and I'm sorry to hear that this is still a problem. Wikipedia does report on historical events that are considered notable due to reporting from reliable sources being available to them. The decision to have articles that discuss these types of events and about the people involved in them is one that's made by the volunteers based on the sources and their review of the topic. That said, as your email notes, it does seem like the volunteers may have done a cursory review without looking into the sources themselves in depth and there may still be an opportunity for volunteers to review the article in more detail and improve it or determine that it should be deleted. Since you have already mentioned the difficulties you've had working with the Wikipedia editors, I'm going to pass on your message to some of my colleagues in the Wikimedia Foundation community team to see if they have suggestions for how we can best pass along this information for the volunteers to review more carefully and make sure that the article and references on Wikipedia properly reflects reliable sources or are deleted if the volunteers feel that the topic no longer is notable once the sources are more closely reviewed. If this shoddy and sloppy work was turned into a college professor, the student would be given a failing grade. You will be shocked and appalled to find that absolutely nothing matches. This clearly calls into question the entire page and the agenda of those who peddled this bogus information and who posted the Singer cites. For WP to profess that it wants to "get it right," this shows that the more accurate meme for WP with respect to me is to "get it all wrong." Once again, I ask that an administrator delete this page. This is really beyond the pale and the page is beyond credible correction. From what you posted from Jacob Rogers' email, he didn't suggest that you edit the page directly (since Wikipedia has policies about editing pages where you have a conflict of interest), but instead said that he would send your complaint to the community team for suggestions on how to pass you complaint on to volunteer editors. I don't have the ability to receive documents through this page, but I can suggest that you email the Wikipedia Volunteer Response Team at info-en-owikimedia.org. They will be more able to deal with your issue than a Wikimedia Foundation lawyer, and have the ability to deal with personal information. Hey Ahecht, I sent that info on May 1st to the email you suggested but have not heard a peep back from them and none of the dead links or the bad Singer book cites have resulted in any removals from the page. @Kpgjhpjm: From what I can tell (and remember, I added the tag 5 years ago), it was over the race summary sections, which were written from a fans point of view, not a neutral encyclopedic point of view, and contained lots of uncited opinion and presumption (calling a performance or a drive "impressive", calling a win "bittersweet" and a loss "heartbreaking", claiming that the home crowd was "angered", calling drivers "ringers", etc.). --Ahecht (TALK

• WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

• Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

• A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

• There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

• Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

• The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
• Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

• A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

• Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
• The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

Edit to Seymour, Indiana

Hello, I'm Bedfordres. You recently reverted my edit to Seymour Indiana because my removal of content was not explained. My purpose for the edit was to remove most of the notable people from the lead and put them in the notable people section. I removed them because there were too many notable people mentioned in the lead, when they should be in the notable people section. In hindsight, I should've added more information to my edit summary, and I plan to do so in later edits. Thank you for alerting me to that problem. As for the Seymour Indiana page, I am unsure about what I do. Should I add back that information, or should I just leave the lead alone? I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Under normal circumstances, an administrator will review the arguments for and against deletion at the end of the week and make the decision as to whether or not to detele the files. For the files where a valid source is listed and where that source clearly indicates that the image is freely licensed, the administrator will close the discussion without deleting the file. --Ahecht (TALK

@Stefan2: The history of that image is that the original uploader took the file at File:WormsLogo.gif, converted it to PNG, embedded the PNG within an SVG wrapper, and uploaded it as File:WormsLogo.svg. I then took the fake SVG, popped out the raster bits, and reuploaded them with the same description at File:WormsLogo.png. I should've removed that text, but I must've missed it. Template:Gridiron tertiary color raw

I'm not really versed in module/template stuff, so I'm not sure how to fix this, but there's a problem with the modulized version (is that a word? it is now.) of this template that's breaking other templates that it's used in. Basically, what this template is supposed to do (as I'm sure you know) is return a raw hex code (i.e. "#FFFFFF"). However, the "#", since it's at the beginning of a line, is being read as a numbered list. For example, {{Gridiron tertiary color raw|Houston Texans}} would return as

1. A71930

even in the middle of a line. Of course, this completely messed up Template:NFL final roster and Template:NFL final staff, both of which use it for coloring. I've temporarily reverted to the pre-module version pending a fix. Thanks, ansh666 22:43, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

@Ansh666: Thanks for the heads up. This module is used in so many different templates, and each seems to have its own tolerance for various ways of escaping the hash sign (some work with HTML character codes, some don't, some work with <nowiki>...</nowiki>, some don't, some work without escaping it at all, some don't). I've found a solution that seems to work for the testcases at Template:Gridiron primary color/testcases, but let me know if you find anything else that it breaks. --Ahecht (TALK

I don't think we have an 'in line' standard format for such edit notices; who is to say what the 'official' format is? I've seen (and written) many such warning-style edit notices and they were all different. In any case, my 'in-your-face' version which you chose to tame down didn't do the trick for this customer whose edit brought the template to your attention.
