Using TsorT.info as a source

Hi there. I'm sorry that it's me again to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm afraid current consensus is that TsorT.info is not acceptable as a source for chart information. I added it to the guideline as well. I edited I Need a Man (Eurythmics song) using the proper way to cite charts, for the ones I could find a source but I had to removed unreliable numbers. I'm not sure how much time I'll have to do this for other articles, but in principle I'd be happy to help. --Muhandes (talk) 09:05, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Hello, I didn't realise as I found the link through wikipedia. The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:CHARTS page does have links to official chart pages for countries which may be useful. I'll have a look and see what references can be added Ajsmith141 (talk) 09:41, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Also there are sources on the website itself - http://tsort.info/music/charts.htm Ajsmith141 (talk) 11:40, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

Consensus is not to use the site itself as a source. Instead, use the individual sources. See the table I edited at I Need a Man (Eurythmics song) as an example. --Muhandes (talk) 11:59, 28 December 2010 (UTC)
Me too, I also said the same thing. You can use Hitparade to source many international charts. Novice7 | Talk 16:47, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Rock and Roll Preacher

The article Rock and Roll Preacher has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not notable enough as a stand-alone article. Fails WP:NSONG. Information can be included in album's article.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. jsfouche ☽☾Talk 11:32, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Requests for Deletion

You may not simply remove the requests for deletion. They must be reviewed. CanadianLinuxUser (talk) 14:02, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Actually, please read WP:DEPROD. Anyone can remove a PROD and they don't need to supply a reason. In fact, adding the PROD back is against the policy. --Muhandes (talk) 14:23, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
Grrrrr... I completely mis-interpreted the policy. You are correct. **Bangs head on table in ignorance** CanadianLinuxUser (talk) 14:37, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
All those different deletion methods (WP:speedy, WP:PROD, WP:AfD) are confusing. It happens. Best regards, and I'm sure no harm done. --Muhandes (talk) 14:45, 14 January 2011 (UTC)
Apologies to Ajsmith141... With those 3 policies... I mixed them all up and "assumed" the policies were similar if not identical. I had you pegged COMPLETELY wrong. Once again apologies for my over zealousness. CanadianLinuxUser (talk) 14:51, 14 January 2011 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Holly Johnson PromoPhoto.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Holly Johnson PromoPhoto.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. We hope (talk) 16:27, 1 April 2011 (UTC)

Charts

I know you mean well, but edits like this are not contributing anything. Listing the website of the chart does not constitutes a source, you will need to specify the specific page in which the listing is made. Also, the number of weeks in the chart should not be listed, per WP:CHARTTRAJ. Again, I know you mean well, but this is not helpful. Best regards. --Muhandes (talk) 00:16, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

That's much more like it, thanks for attending to these.--Muhandes (talk) 08:33, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

That's ok, best wishes. Ajsmith141 (talk) 08:51, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

I noticed you use tsort.info, note that it should not be used as it appears on WP:BADCHART. Also, I'm using reflinks to complete those references. --Muhandes (talk) 11:02, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

I don't tend to use tsort.info as I realise it isn't 100% reliable but it is the only found source for certain countries such as Belgium, Japan and Poland. I have searched for these countries but have found nothing of any use in terms of chart positions. Ajsmith141 (talk) 11:12, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Well, as it is on WP:BADCHART it should be avoided. If you can't find a decent source for a chart peak you can either remove it or tag it for sources. I tend to tag for sources and if no sources are provided for several months I remove it. By the way, I'm not even sure just saying "Belgian Singles Chart" even means anything since there are two such charts, Ultratop 50 (Flemish) for Flanders and Ultratop 50 for Wallonia, it could be either. --Muhandes (talk) 13:56, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

From what I can see, both Ultratop 40 and Ultratop 50 started during the mid-1990s. There must have been another Belgian chart survey for anything before that period. Ajsmith141 (talk) 14:03, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

I see. Well, we probably don't have reliable sources for that chart, we don't even know if it will be acceptable as a chart (many charts are not), so we might as well remove them. --Muhandes (talk) 15:28, 9 June 2011 (UTC)
A quick search has come up with this: ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1422554. Seems to be titled BELGIUM SALES TOP 20 (FLANDERS - WALLONIE). Perhaps both were originally one. I know the given link isn't a reliable source but it does show that there is some charting history, in this case within the top 20. I don't mind either way if they're removed or left for now but I'll see what else I can find. Ajsmith141 (talk) 15:42, 9 June 2011 (UTC)

Stubs.

Hi, your articles are well-written and well referenced. That was not why I have downgraded some to stubs. I have downgraded because there is absolutely no information about the songs, nothing about the music, the lyrics, critical reception, musicians, recording etc. An article about a song should actually give some detail about the song, if all WP is going to do is list the song with chart placings we might as well merge all the artist's songs into one article and make it part of WP:Charts. FWIW, I am presently going through a list of newly created articles, not checking up on you! Cheers. --Richhoncho (talk) 10:17, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

You are completely missing the point. I am not assessing on the song on chart performance. Chart performance makes the song notable, it is NOT the song. Also I do suggest that if you are the major contributor to the article you do not revert me, however, if you think I have been a little too hard (sure, I know I make mistakes) I more than happy to review my assessments and amend as necessary, just drop me a note. If you cannot source more information - which is often the case of pre-internet songs - then they cannot rise above stubs. In future if you just add WPSongs without assessing on articles you have created it would be much better. BTW I shall now create a category for Fergal Sharkey songs, any other cats you want me to create? --Richhoncho (talk) 10:34, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
I have re-assessed the song up, as requested. I think it is borderline, but as its all a matter of opinion, there is no point falling out over it. Cheers. --Richhoncho (talk) 14:47, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Use of non-free image File:Slade We'll Bring The House Down.ogg on We'll Bring the House Down (song)

The non-free image File:Slade We'll Bring The House Down.ogg was recently restored to We'll Bring the House Down (song) by you after it have been removed for failure of our non-free content criteria policy, specifically item #10c which requires a "separate, specific non-free use rationale for each use of the item". The image still fails the 10c policy requirement and has been removed from the article again. Please do not restore this image to that article again without complying with the requirements of that policy. For more information on how to write an appropriate non-free use rationale, please consult Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline. If you have questions about this, please ask. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 13:03, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

I note that you did make an addition to the image description page, but did not add a rationale for this use. --Hammersoft (talk) 19:17, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

  • Hello, not 100% sure that what I am doing is correct but I believe I have added another rationale if you could please check, thanks. Ajsmith141 (talk) 19:25, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
    • (responding here) It's adequate by normal routine here, but it's a disappointing rationale; pure copy/paste. Why does it have to be used in two places, rather than referred to from one place? --Hammersoft (talk) 20:08, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

I am not sure why the media cannot be used in two articles, whilst the song article obviously has the sample, the album article also gives the reader a summary of single samples. An example is the Michael Jackson song Thriller - the sample is used in more than one place: [1]. I also don't see what other rationale text can be used as the sample uses both the same rationale for each article. Ajsmith141 (talk) 20:12, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

  • WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS arguments don't work because other stuff isn't necessarily following best practices either. Have a read through WP:NFLISTS #4. While that's in a section about lists, the principle applies. If someone really needs to hear the sound sample, they can find it on the song's article. It's not necessary to repeat it elsewhere. --Hammersoft (talk) 20:17, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

I understand WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS but I was simply using it as an example of two seperate rationales and that such a popular song has two seperate rationales without question. Whilst it may not be necessary, the WP:NFLISTS #4 does state that if duplication is used then a separate non-free fair use rationale must be supplied for the image for the new use which has just been done. At the end of the day I don't mind if the song article solely uses the file but I don't see any harm in it being on both. There hasn't been any questions about it since the file was first in late December last year. Ajsmith141 (talk) 20:25, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

  • And, incorrect things hanging around a long time doesn't lend legitimacy to them either :) I think it best to remove it from the article that's not specifically about the song. --Hammersoft (talk) 20:29, 13 July 2011 (UTC)
I agree the clips should only be used once, to serve an encyclopedic purpose, which is to inform the reader, but also satisfy minimal use. The logical place seems to be in the song articles, not the album. Franamax (talk) 22:54, 13 July 2011 (UTC)

Slade

With respect, how does Sonny Boy Williamson II become Sonny Boy Williams ? Also please check the early song titles in the article such as "Security", "You Better Run" and "Evil Witchman", which presently do not have the "" (quotation marks). I am presently re-reading Noddy's autobiography, Who's Crazee Now?, which may supply further references when I finally get round to it. Cheers,

Derek R Bullamore (talk) 20:21, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Hello, sorry the name should read Sonny Boy Williamson II anyway and not Williams. I have changed this now and will add some quotation marks. Thanks. Ajsmith141 (talk) 07:12, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Slade GAN

Hi, I'm AJona1992, I am not the reviewer but I usually just fast read a new GAN article to see anything that may hinder it from being a GA article.

These are just a few pointers, but the "Awards and nominations" section shouldn't be in a list-format. The lead should include all the major aspects of the article per WP:LEAD. Also try not to use weasel words "Slade was well known as a live act and would always be able to find gigs" what does this mean? It also seems that the article may suffer from WP:OR and WP:FAN. A model band article like Decapitated (band) or other GA band articles could help you out. Maybe a copy-edit of the article would be better, try adding it to the list here. You can have both the request and GAN open at the same time, usually the copy-editing happens before the GA review. Hope this helps! Good luck, AJona1992 (talk) 15:49, 5 August 2011 (UTC)

Portland Lighthouses

Many thanks for all your contributions to the Isle of Portland pages. I see you have added details of the other disused lighthouses. However, one working lighthouse is missing - that on the breakwaters. It has been there for well over a hundred years and I think it is worthy of a mention. The other alternative is to combine all lighthouses on Portland in one article. Your view are welcomed. With best regards, David J Johnson (talk) 00:56, 17 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply re: Breakwater Lighthouse. There was certainly a article and pic on the Portlanders.co.uk; webpage on this lighthouse. Haven't had time to re-check, as we have folks here for dinner. Hope you can find this info? With best regards, David, David J Johnson (talk) 18:54, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
Burning the midnight oil tonight. The article in question re: the harbour lighthouse was in fact a invitation on the Portlanders website to another website: www.portland-rover.com/search/label/Harbour. This article has a good clear picture, plus history of this lighthouse. You might be able to get permission to use this pic? Isle of Portland

Thank you for all your contributions on articles on the Isle of Portland. Could I suggest a further article could be the two Portland Windmills, located between Easton and Weston. They are some of the oldest buildings on the island and in the case of the northern mill in a sad state of repair. Certainly Geoof Kirby has reference to them and also general windmill sites on the internet. I very much regret that, at the moment, I've not the time to initiate a new article - but certain think they are worth a mention. What is your view? Regards, David David J Johnson (talk) 15:46, 22 January 2013 (UTC)

    • Thanks so much for a great article. I have, however, changed the captions - as they were wrong. My only other comment is that the Northern Windmill (Angel Mill) does look slightly better than the photo - the ivy having been either blown or taken down. So it is possible to see the tower better. It does concern me that no-one seems to want to know about their condition, especially as they are some of the oldest buildings on the island. Anyway, thanks for all your efforts and best regards, David David J Johnson (talk) 16:53, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Broadcroft Quarry, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Green Woodpecker (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Article Feedback deployment

Hey Ajsmith141; I'm dropping you this note because you've used the article feedback tool in the last month or so. On Thursday and Friday the tool will be down for a major deployment; it should be up by Saturday, failing anything going wrong, and by Monday if something does :). Better source request for some of your uploads

Thanks for your uploads to Wikipedia. There is an issue with some of them, specifically:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the images because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the images, rather than only giving the source domain or the URL of the image files themselves. Please update the image descriptions with URLs that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. Message delivered by Theo's Little Bot (opt-out) 21:24, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi!

I thank you so much for improving the articles Elstree (song) and Clean, Clean. I was wondering you improve the article Living in the Plastic Age and see if any info could be added to the article I just created, I Love You (Miss Robot). Thanks. EditorE (talk) 01:09, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Re: Re: Hi!

Thanks. I planning to get these Buggles articles to get up to GA status, and I'm hoping the Buggles became a Good Topic on Wikipedia. I don't think the notability is really a problem in the article I Love You (Miss Robot) because, as long as the song has "been the subject of multiple, non-trivial published works whose sources are independent of the artist and label.", which it does, it follows the criteria in WP:NSONG, and yet I think it's good enough to be a good article. Hi again.

It's felt like a while since I've talked to you. You may remember improving those Buggles articles, and I thank you so much for doing that. I was wondering if we could start working together on some music articles. I was also seeing you can complete and improve the article Inspiration (William Hung album), because it appears that there's info in the 40-mintue DVD documentary as well some reviews I've put on the article that you could use to improve this article. I wasn't able to buy the DVD, so I was wondering if you could to improve this article. I'm hoping you have time to improve the other Buggles song articles, On TV (song) and Adventures in Modern Recording (song), as well as add more info to Living in the Plastic Age. Have a great day. Hey Ajsmith141

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 21:13, 28 June 2013 (UTC)
