AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!
Greetings!
After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.
The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.
On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:
- Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
- Diversity winner
- Gender-gap fillers
For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Chief Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti
Hello, Alanna.
I saw that you were asking about upgrading the chief's page. I'm here to offer what little I know. I admit that I'm new to all this, however. What exactly is required to bring it up to code as far as GA is concerned? Yours sincerely,
O.
O.ominirabluejack (talk) 02:30, 10 October 2019 (UTC)O.ominirabluejack
- Hello O.ominirabluejack -- thanks for the offer of help! I would be glad to have your assistance. Bringing an article up to GA standards typically involves a few things: (1) ensuring that all article text is properly cited/sourced from reliable sources, (2) ensuring that the writing is clear and aligns with the Wikipedia Manual of Style, and (3) ensuring that the article uses well-captioned public domain images, contains useful links, is tagged with correct categories, etc. You can check out this page about Good Article criteria for more information.
- For the past few weeks, I've been reviewing sources/citations currently used in the Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti article. I've removed sources that either don't support the content or are unreliable (there were a couple of sources cited that were written based on the Wikipedia article, making them "circular" references), and I've edited/corrected some of the Wikipedia text to more accurately reflect what the sources say. At this point, there are several paragraphs in the article that have no citations to back them up. Would you be interested in helping me fix this? It would involve doing some research, identifying reliable sources, and using those sources to support the Ransome-Kuti article. If you have any questions about what Wikipedia considers a "reliable source", feel free to check with me first. All the best, Alanna the Brave (talk) 13:23, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
- That would be wonderful. I'll begin to review the sources now. Don't worry, I'll run everything that gives me trouble by you first.
- Also, would you perhaps give me advice concerning something else? I've edited the chief's page and a number of others to use pre-nominal honorifics in the introductions. These were reverted, and I was then warned about the three strike reversion rule when I edited them again. My contention is this: If European aristocrats are allowed to use their styles and honorifics, why aren't we allowed to use ours? Standard policy (if in fact that is what it is) should apply to everyone, and when it appears to be selectively applied, it breeds resentment.
O.ominirabluejack (talk) 14:01, 10 October 2019 (UTC) O.ominirabluejack.
- Excellent! Let me know how the source reviewing goes, O. Here is my take on your honorifics question: if the Nigerian "Chief" is considered an honorific/pre-nominal in the same way that a European aristocratic honorific is, then I absolutely agree the same style rules apply. We should never be selectively applying the rules. I would note, however, that pre-nominal honorifics and titles are not typically used throughout an entire Wikipedia article. They usually appear at the beginning of the introduction section ("Chief Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti..."), and they are mentioned when writing about how they were received ("Ransome-Kuti was named a chief..."), but Wikipedia style generally dictates that biographical articles refer to people by last name only in the body of the article -- no honorifics. I think we should follow that style. Were you able to resolve the disagreement with the other editor? Just to avoid any 3-strike risks, you might want to wait at least 24 hours before re-adding "Chief" to the article's introduction. Alanna the Brave (talk) 15:01, 10 October 2019 (UTC)
- I will wait. I wouldn't want to get into trouble. I am glad that you agree with me, though... I was beginning to think that maybe it was just me. I resolved the matter with one editor (Kunkuru) who saw my point in the end, but by then another one (Binksternet) had also become involved. He was the one who deleted my most recent contributions. I've asked him why, but so far I am yet to receive a response... At least I think that I am. I'll check again as soon as I'm done speaking to you.

I just wanted to say that you've done an amazing job on Chief Ransome-Kuti's page. It seems as though you've combed every nook and cranny to find the appropriate references.
