Question from Mikeisflux (21:01, 30 January 2024)
Hey how can I create a page about myself? --Mikeisflux (talk) 21:01, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Mikeisflux, we highly recommend against that. Are there multiple newspaper, books, magazines, etc, discussing you in significant detail? Alyo (chat·edits) 21:50, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
- I am the author of several books as well as the founder of Divinity Comics and Comics Illustrated a monthly Indie Comics news publication. 73.36.4.90 (talk) 21:56, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
- Be that as it may, Wikipedia generally requires biographies to include multiple sources discussing the subject in significant detail. In other words, the fact that you've written books or founded publications isn't enough unless other reliable sources in the space have also covered your books, or written about you as the founder of those two organizations. Finally, please see Wikipedia:Autobiography for our policy about autobiographies. Again, it is strongly discouraged. Alyo (chat·edits) 22:07, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from PinkTuxedoCat (17:00, 7 February 2024)
Hello, I was trying to add this part under "Parts that are difficult to understand if you are not Korean" - 생선을 먹을 땐 가시 발라먹어 “When I eat fish, I discard the bones” In Korean, fish bones (가시 - gasi) sounds a lot like hypocrisy (가식 - gasik) 수박을 먹을 때는 씨 발라먹어 “When I eat watermelons, I discard the seeds” In Korean, 씨발 is a swear word. but My Pants Metal keeps deleting my contribution. This time his reasoning was: sourced provided aren't reliable, published sources. Additionally, this is an encyclopedia. Not a translation service. Personally I don't understand why he is saying the sources aren't reliable as it was a dictionary page as well as wiki page. So if the sources aren't reliable literally all the dictionaries in the world should be gone and wikipedia should be gone as it is not reliable per what Mr. My Pants Metal (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:My_Pants_Metal) is saying. At this point I'm feeling rather censored. I feel that he is trying to prevent non-Koreans from fully undrestanding this song. --PinkTuxedoCat (talk) 17:00, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @PinkTuxedoCat, I believe you are talking about I Luv It (Psy song), right? As a general rule, Wikipedia relies on independent sources to inform us when a topic should be covered on Wikipedia, and we try not to write about things that you or I may know from our own experiences, even if its true. We call this wp:original research, and it's generally prohibited. For this article, that means that you should look for a source that actually discusses the play on words that Psy is using--I believe you that your korean translation is essentially accurate, but that isn't the same as saying that should go into the article. Does that make sense? Alyo (chat·edits) 05:30, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
Question from Nocawe 23 (09:25, 10 February 2024)
hello how can i change Pictures --Nocawe 23 (talk) 09:25, 10 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Nocawe 23, what are you referring to? Do you mean on a specific page? or uploading a new photo that isn't on wikipedia? Alyo (chat·edits) 21:55, 11 February 2024 (UTC)
- i mean uploading on a Picture also
- also how can i add a music sample to a specific page Nocawe 23 (talk) 17:53, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Nocawe 23, you would use the Special:Upload function--but please note that as a general rule, you should only be uploading photos that you took yourself. This also applies to music samples--if you don't own the music sample, then there are lots of rules that apply and limit how you can use those. Alyo (chat·edits) 03:52, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Adermond11 (21:52, 20 February 2024)
Hi! How to I create a page for a business. Thanks! --Adermond11 (talk) 21:52, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Adermond11, Wikipedia is not a place to advertise your business, so please note that the business will only be accepted if independent, reliable sources have discussed the business in detail. Do you have a few of those sources? Alyo (chat·edits) 22:36, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
Atlanta United Football Club
- Well, according to your response, the club isn’t called Atlanta United FC either, but simply Atlanta United, as this is what the club says itself in the article -- But no problem, I’ve added a source straight from the club. -esse quam videri - to be rather than to seem (talk) 16:14, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
- Haha I think it's pretty clear they'd prefer that, based on the direction their branding goes. I still don't love that source, but I'm at least going to move it to the infobox and standardize the other places where the name of the club is listed. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:25, 23 February 2024 (UTC)
- Couple of things first: I have not been edit warring FOR 3+ years, that is a lie, I’m afraid I can’t let you write that on my talk page without rebuking it.
I have provided sources for the TEAM name, not the corporation name. That »Football Club« is the corporation name is an unfounded claim by user Walter Görlitz who was in fact edit warring.
If you had done your research, you’d have probably realized it AND you would have learned that this user in question was blocking the change that had been advocated by a number of other editors: Club names in Major League Soccer. I had provided sources, the other user has not, period.
Secondly, I’m not sure how or where you came to the conclusion that you are entitled to tell me what to do (»stop«), so kindly take your own advice and refrain.
There is a reason it’s called full name vs. abbreviation. You conveniently ignored my reference to Liverpool FC, Chelsea FC and countless other examples here on Wikipedia, another is FC Bayern. The more interesting point however is that none of said articles has provided a source corroborating that the respective name is Liverpool Football Club, Chelsea Football Club or Fussball-Club Bayern München, so I have in fact done more than was done in these articles. If you really were interested in applying the arbitrary standardization rules you mentioned, why don’t you go ahead and abbreviate them to the common name with which they are referred to? I’d love to see how that goes.
The case with Atlanta United Football Club is that a group of users seem to believe they can claim something without providing proof, and sadly, they seem to be right in their belief.
Find a source where the team or club says that they are NOT called Football Club and that this is only the suffix for the legal entity.
Until then, your actions are more in line with WP:OWN and WP:CPP. The year of the source is irrelevant, it’s official. There’s a reason you haven’t provided any source, and neither has the other edit-warrior.
Have you even looked at a single one of the sources I provided (of which there are 18 - in words: eighteen - listed) instead of assuming? Of course not, otherwise you wouldn’t have claimed that that the full name is not spelled out in »any media coverage«, which is false and either caused by ignorance due to lack of research or a lie based on deliberate ommission of facts that prove the contrary. XD
Why don’t you do an editor’s homework first and check the sources: From the Atlanta United official website: »We are a football club […]« [6]. Oh wait, there’s more: »The club engaged with the city’s community from the get-go—Atlanta United Football Club was a name decided by fans through online polling.« [7]. There are 16 more sources, help yourself. According to your and the other user’s reasoning, fans decided on the corporate name by way of an online-poll, right? They must be fans of the enterprise, but not the team, impressive.
Let’s have a look: Atlanta United Football Club is mentioned in the following media sources: »Atlanta United Football Club is already breaking Major League Soccer records. More than 26,000 fans paid deposits to secure season tickets. And it’s for a TEAM that doesn’t start playing until March 2017.« [8]; »“We are the ‘A’”: Atlanta United, Nationalism, And What It Means To Belong« (page 3) [9]; »Support your club and the City of Atlanta community with other like-minded fans of Atlanta United Football Club.« (Resurgence Supporters Group) [10]; »Atlanta United Football Club« (World Soccer Shop) https://www.worldsoccershop. com/shop/clubs/atlanta-united; Peach Review [11]; Saporta Report [12]; Yahoo Sports [13]; Fox 5 Atlanta [14]; CNN [15]; Atlanta Voice [16]; Museum Tower [17]; Atlanta City Council [18].
So, both official club and independent media sources use it over and over again, but what is not allowed, will be denied existence on Wikipedia. XD I am curious though, why did you add Football Club to the full name section when it’s allegedly only the name of the corporate entity and not the »team«? And if it’s the corporate name according to your claim, where is the LLC suffix?
I’ll tell you what, you can go on and indulge in manipulating articles to your liking, every so often I’m reminded what a toxic cess pool this is. Good luck. --esse quam videri - to be rather than to seem (talk) 00:31, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Herr chagall I'm sorry, but I don't have time to go through this and refute point by point the same issues that were brought on your talk page in 2021 if you're still not going to answer them. I found the documents of incorporation--Walter Görlitz is correct. You keep pointing to European comparisons, when it has clearly been pointed out to you that in America, things are just different. Clubs regularly use "FC" as a branding mechanism without actually wanting to be called "Football Club". All of your sources are old, and modern use by the club, fans, MLS, and the media leans away from spelling out "Football Club". I have left "Football Club" as the full name in the infobox purely as a compromise, but if we're gonna make any changes to the lead sentence (or the article title), it should actually be to remove "FC" entirely, as that's what the club appears to be rebranding as (note how the MLS lists the club). I ask you to consider these updated arguments, because the list of links you're providing here is very out of date and includes apartment buildings and multiple blogs that would have no weight in this discussion.
So, both official club and independent media sources use it over and over again
-- find something from the last year, please. Here's the google search result. Your best (only?) source is a small town Georgia newspaper. Alyo (chat·edits) 14:42, 28 February 2024 (UTC)- This is not a debate in good faith when the rules and demands are changed constantly to accommodate and favor one point of view. You haven’t refuted any points, sorry to tell you like this, you just repeat unfounded claims by Görlitz who used straw man and deflection tactics to distract from the actual point of contention.
- To clarify: Initially, the requirement was to provide official sources/club sources. That I did.
- Then, after this requirement was met, a new requirement was brought up, or rather, a claim: that the full name is not the actual name and that it is not used »[…] in any media coverage«. I refuted this claim, too, and now we have arrived at yet another, more particular demand that you want fulfilled: that it has to be from last year onwards. To spare me the effort, let me ask in advance: when I post current and recent sources, will you demand that the club owner personally has to affirm in written form that the name is Atlanta United Football Club?
- Your quote: »Standardize other uses to the COMMONNAME« [19]. The COMMONNAME is NOT the the issue here, which can be either Atlanta United FC, Atlanta United or ATL Utd.
- The point of contention is the FULL name, which doesn’t equate a commonly used abbreviation or variant of the official name. If you honestly want to STANDARDIZE the COMMONNAME on articles about football clubs, I invite you again to try it on the articles of FC Bayern (common name), Chelsea FC (common name) and Liverpool FC (common name) for starters. The geographical location of these clubs is irrelevant to the standardization of COMMONNAME elements, so please don’t use it as an excuse not to move forward and remove the full name from the lead paragraph.
- Your quote: »Clubs regularly use “FC” as a branding mechanism without actually wanting to be called “Football Club”« - another strong and false statement, unless you are directly involved with the clubs and their leadership and privy to information of how they plan their strategies and provide evidence of their intentions.
- I had posted the link to the club’s about section where it says that it’s a football club. Even the legal entity has »football club« in its name as well - if they didn’t want to be called that, they would have registered the name »Atlanta United FC, LLC«, or »Atlanta United, LLC«.
- This should answer your question, another official club source: »Atlanta United Football Club, LLC (the “MLS Team”)« [20] - the TEAM name and the LEGAL name are identical. Or are you going to argue against the club itself now?
- Your quote: »[…] modern use by the club, fans, MLS, and the media leans away from spelling out “Football Club”«.
- What does »leaning away« from USING the full name have to do with the full name itself? I’m not quite sure what the reasoning is behind repeating false claims. I could understand it if this was used to mislead someone who is not involved in the debate, but I am involved and I have proved you wrong. A full name remains a full name, regardless of the frequency in everyday usage or general news coverage.
- You ignored the source that tells you that the fans themselves voted for the club’s name to be »Atlanta United Football Club« - why is that? You also ignored the discussion about adding the full name to the lead paragraph where the majority were in favor of it [21], @Jts1882, @Koncorde, @C. Gerstle.
- Another false claim is that »ALL of [my] sources are old« - »old« does not equate »outdated«. The majority of my sources are current, again this is easy to verify, but you opted to repeat false claims by Görlitz without due diligence.
- Again, branding is irrelevant when it comes to the full or official name, I HAVE NEVER said that the full name is used more often than the abbreviation, the number of football clubs which do that in any country is negligible. I HAVE ALSO NEVER changed the article title or advocated anything of that sort, I had just added the full name to the lead paragraph and this triggered Görlitz for some reason. There has been no official or verified renaming of the club, which you however insinuate. You will have to meet the same requirements and provide sources that confirm that alleged change.
- Your assumptions are based on branding combined with ignoring or downplaying sources that point to the opposite.
- This is illustrated with another United Statesian club from the MLS, Inter Miami CF. Let’s apply your and Görlitz’s arguments to that club:
- Modern use by the club, fans, MLS, and the media leans away from spelling out [the name]: correct.
- The club BRANDS itself as Inter Miami CF [22]; the MLS BRANDS the club as Inter Miami CF [23]; the media refer to the club as Inter Miami or Inter Miami CF [24] [25]; the agency responsible for the BRAND IDENTITY calls the club Inter Miami CF [26] … and yet the club’s official/full name is Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami - there is no source listed for the full name in the Wikipedia article, but it is not challenged, odd, isn’t it? The only source for its full name are the club badge and the about page on the club site [27]. However, according to your reasoning, the club’s name would be Inter Miami CF because of the branding and frequency of usage by club, fans and media. So much about consistency, but this is not really what it’s about, is it?
- FC Cincinnatti for instance, explicitly separates the names of the legal entity and the team [28]. There is no such distinction available or known in the case of Atlanta United, so unless you can provide a source of that category, rejecting the addition of the official full name is not editing in good faith but POV-pushing.
- You confuse - or maybe deliberately mix up - marketing campaigns and practices with the full name of a club or team.
- As to your search result, again I’m not sure how you searched, there are plenty of hits:
- 2024:
- FANS - Resurgence Supporters Group, a supporter group of the club: »Support your club and the City of Atlanta community with other like-minded fans of Atlanta United Football Club.« I had listed the source above, you ignored it;
- MEDIA Transfermarkt, a news portal on football clubs, player transfers and values et al.: »Official club name: Atlanta United Football Club« [29] - if you don’t know about the relevance of transfermarkt.com, see its Wikipedia entry;
- MEDIA - Global Sports Archive, a sports statistics portal, owned by Data Sports Group, and a recognized reliable source on Wikipedia, incorporated into player templates to retrieve data for info boxes: »Official club name: Atlanta United Football Club« [30];
- COMPANIES - Draper & Associates, the company that built the training complex for the club: »[…] for Atlanta’s Major League Soccer Team, the Atlanta United Football Club« [31];
- 2023:
- CLUB - Goalkeeper coach job position: »Atlanta United Football Club« [32];
- CLUB - Data analyst job position to improve team performance (closed in the meanwhile): »Atlanta United Football Club is looking to add a detail-oriented, methodical, and collaborative Data Analyst to our growing team […] This position is required to engage in collaboration with the entire sports science and technical staff.« [33]; also found on football news site »The Striker«: »Atlanta United’s analytics revolution has begun« [34];
- FANS - Georgia Tech Alumni Association: »The GT Atlanta Intown Alumni and GT Hispanic Alumni invite you to the 4th Annual GT Alumni Night with the Atlanta United Football Club« [35];
- 2022:
- FANS - National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund: »The Atlanta United Football Club is teaming up with the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday, September 10, 2022 for First Responders Day as Atlanta United takes on Toronto FC.« [36].
- Curious to see which ones you will ignore and which ones you will call »irrelevant«. -esse quam videri - to be rather than to seem (talk) 05:23, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Herr chagall, you must be more concise in your answers, out of respect for other editors. I'm going to trim the fat on our discussion to just the critical issues:
- "Atlanta United Football Club, LLC" is the name of the corporation that runs the club. You keep saying @Walter Görlitz's claims were unfounded, but I linked you to the articles of incorporation above. Just...click the link? And you'll see that we're right?
- The club draws a distinction between the use of that full title and the use of a shortened "FC" for branding purposes. Hilariously, one of your own links shows this--that goalkeeper coach job listing says
AMB Sports & Entertainment Group ... is comprised of the Atlanta Falcons Football Club, LLC, Atlanta’s Major League Soccer team, Atlanta United FC...
, drawing a distinction between an LLC and the club that plays in the MLS. - In further support of point 2, the MLS no longer calls the club "Atlanta United FC", instead just preferring "Atlanta United". At some point during this season, depending on the news coverage I see, I will probably start a discussion to move the page to "Atlanta United" and drop the FC entirely.
- You keep providing links to usage of "Football Club", but none of them qualify as reliable sources. Supporters groups, Transfermarkt, advertising by Draper, job listings, an alumni association--literally none of these meet our standards for independent, reliable third parties suitable for general statements of this type. None. If you disagree with this, then you fundamentally misunderstand our sourcing policies. My search result was on for actual reliable sources that have editorial policies and a demonstrated history of fact checking. I simply don't care that a national law enforcement advocacy organization says "Football Club", why on earth would they be relevant experts in this discussion?
- As stupid as this may seem to you (and I agree that it's stupid!) in the US we have no history of the word "FC" always meaning "Football Club" in conjunction with local sporting outfits (especially for soccer). "FC" is just a term we slap on the end of a team name because the Europeans did it that way and it says "FC" in FIFA 13. An indicator of this is the fact that all British clubs actually use proper punctuation (i.e., Leicester City F.C. where the periods following F and C clearly indicate they are initialisms). Note how no American club does that. Instead, "football club" is historically associated with NFL franchises (refer to the quote in point 2).
- In the spirit of compromise, I have left "Football Club" in the infobox in the fullname parameter since there is at least a parent organization named that and I don't think it's 100% wrong--only 95% wrong. I don't care about your gotcha's about having the LLC in there or not--I'm happy to remove "Football Club" from the infobox as well if that's what makes me consistent in your mind.
- However, the COMMONNAME of the club, the name they play under in MLS, and the name that national news media refer to them as is "Atlanta United" and sometimes "Atlanta United FC".
- Actually yeah, I'm just gonna start a discussion to move this to "Atlanta United" this season. You've convinced me.
- Alyo (chat·edits) 15:42, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- You MUST practice reading comprehension and refrain from attempts to create a narrative, out of respect for other editors who respond in earnest - the reason why I am so thorough is to refer back to the links if necessary. I will just address the manipulations:
- What I wrote above: »The COMMONNAME is NOT the the issue here, which can be either Atlanta United FC, Atlanta United or ATL Utd.« The you go to point 7 and rephrase it. Straw man. Nobody questions what the COMMONNAME is.
- Point 5, another straw man: Nobody says that FC always means Football Club, what purpose does this deflection serve? We, or at least I, am talking about Atlanta United Football Club. You said it yourself, the associations with the U.S. variant of rugby are historical, and no longer accurately reflect the changing landscape of sports franchises.
- Point 4, more selective ignoring and deflection: You have club sources, current ones even, and you manipulatively insinuate that they don’t count. The club’s official website where it markets the suites in the stadium says the following: »Atlanta United Football Club, LLC (the “MLS Team”) [37] and you put in real effort to ignore it. What is hilarious is that you spin a different narrative. Then you go on at length to lecture about why other source categories are not »reliable«, which you brought up in the first place - so if fans (who you mentioned) or media (who you mentioned) DON’T write the full name, it is reliable to you, but if they do, it is not, got it! Every response just makes it clearer and I genuinely appreciate it. And again you ignored that the full name was put up for votes by the franchise and ended up being chosen by the fans, for the third time now.
- Point 3, more ignoring when your argument is applied to another club, Inter Miami. Let’s see some standardization and consistency here. I don’t care where the page is moved to, it can be Atl Utd for all I care. I want the full name to be added to the lead, as it was, because it IS the full name - nothing more. The fundamental opposition to this is mind boggling, and again manipulative ignoring of what I had said earlier. You conveniently avoid mentioning the discussion that was already had and a consensus that was reached but blocked by Görlitz who himself didn’t partake in the discussion. I’ll link again, for the record: [38]
- Point 2, deliberate misleading: The MLS practice is irrelevant to the official name, as I already said. It doesn’t own or define the name of the franchise, and it puzzles me how you cling on to it - if we are honest, it is in the same category as the fan sites. Branding doesn’t change the real name, only the COMMONNAME, which is a completely different thing and for the rest, see the beginning above.
- Point 1, see point 4 and that I’m … correct.
- -esse quam videri - to be rather than to seem (talk) 18:01, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
- You don't seem to understand the policies we have in place here. E.g., stating that fansites (covered by WP:UGC) and MLS (covered by WP:PRIMARY) should be treated the same on WP is completely wrong. You have yet to bring up a single acceptable source, and instead link to websites that I would immediately revert if added to the article.
- Here is a list of every holding corporation in the MLS. Note how many of the corporations have different names from the clubs/teams in the MLS. For example, Dynamo Soccer, LLC runs the Houston Dynamo club. Thus, LLC names are separate from club names. In fact, Dynamo the club actually changed its name to add "Football Club", all the while Dynamo the corporation retained the same name. So for Houston, you would be correct to spell out Football Club as the full name of the club. For Atlanta United, you need to provide a reliable, independent source saying that the club--not the LLC--is called "Football Club". You have not done so. Until you do that, I'm repeating myself. If you link to anything that says "Atlanta United Football Club, LLC", it is clearly talking about the corporation. I'll go practice my reading comprehension now. - @Herr chagall, you must be more concise in your answers, out of respect for other editors. I'm going to trim the fat on our discussion to just the critical issues:
- Couple of things first: I have not been edit warring FOR 3+ years, that is a lie, I’m afraid I can’t let you write that on my talk page without rebuking it.
Question from 124person123 (16:04, 26 February 2024)
hi how do i delete my account --124person123 (talk) 16:04, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, for copyright reasons you cannot delete your account. However, since there's no identifying information in your account name and you only made it 20 minutes ago, you can just stop using it. Alyo (chat·edits) 16:09, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
- I'm curious. It's true of course that an account cannot be deleted, but why do you say it's "for copyright reasons"?--Bbb23 (talk) 18:16, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Bbb23 my understanding (I am not a copyright lawyer) is that because of the of the license wikipedia uses to release all content, attribution is required for all edits--either an IP address or an account username. Obviously the account can be renamed to gibberish and in this case, I don't think 124person123's contributions would realistically cause any concern in a court of law, but that feature isn't even turned on in mediawiki to preempt the attribution issue. (There some fun intersection with the Right to be forgotten under GDPR and whether this will eventually require WP policy to change, but I haven't followed any developments in that discussion in a couple years.) Alyo (chat·edits) 18:38, 26 February 2024 (UTC)
- What you say sounds plausible. Thanks much.--Bbb23 (talk) 20:36, 26 February 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The mobile visual editor is now the default editor for users who never edited before, at a small group of wikis. Research shows that users using this editor are slightly more successful publishing the edits they started, and slightly less successful publishing non-reverted edits. Users who defined the wikitext editor as their default on desktop will get the wikitext editor on mobile for their first edit on mobile as well. [39]
- The mw.config value
wgGlobalGroups
now only contains groups that are active in the wiki. Scripts no longer have to check whether the group is active on the wiki via an API request. A code example of the above is:if (/globalgroupname/.test(mw.config.get("wgGlobalGroups")))
. [40]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 27 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 28 February. It will be on all wikis from 29 February (calendar). [41][42]

Question from Ellasmithdavis06 (18:48, 27 February 2024)
Sorry, this is a little bit convoluted. I edited the Wikipedia page for Kandolus, a village in Iran. The romanized spelling was different throughout the article, I changed it to Kandelous as that's what's on their official website. I was wondering how to change the title/if I even should? Thanks! --Ellasmithdavis06 (talk) 18:48, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Ellasmithdavis06, good question! As a general rule, Wikipedia uses the "common name" of a topic, as it's used in english-language sources. I don't know how exactly that article settled at "Kandolus" versus one of the alternate spellings, but generally we only change article titles if we/you can show that more english sources use Kandelous, or if that's more proper than Kandolus. Given that this is a very small village, I'm not sure that is possible? If you speak Farsi or could discuss why كندلوس is better translated as Kandelous, you could probably make the change, but I'm not sure that the website URL is sufficient information to change the article's title. Alyo (chat·edits) 14:56, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
- That makes sense, thank you! Ellasmithdavis06 (talk) 15:47, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
Question from Jan Nare (13:41, 6 March 2024)
Hi
I want to add my biography. Can you please give a biography example to edit from there? --Jan Nare (talk) 13:41, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Jan Nare, autobiographies are strongly discouraged on Wikipedia, as it is a conflict of interest, and people are generally a bad judge of whether they themselves are notable. Have multiple news articles, books, magazines, etc, been written about you? Alyo (chat·edits) 15:56, 6 March 2024 (UTC)
Question from Shajive on Hindu Temple of Minnesota (23:24, 9 March 2024)
I would like to rename this page and am unable to move it or find the setting to move it. --Shajive (talk) 23:24, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Shajive, I'm sorry, but I've had to undo your edits. If you want to make an article about the Hindu Society of Minnesota, that should be a new article--right now the article is about the temple and it's not right to just rewrite the article to cover a new topic and then move the article. Instead, you should submit the new article at WP:Articles for creation. Alyo (chat·edits) 23:34, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- When the page was created it should have been the Hindu Society of Minnesota not the Hindu Temple of Minnesota, I was attempting to rectify that issue. Shajive (talk) 23:38, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Shajive, I understand what you were attempting to do, but now this article has been about the temple since 2018. An article about the Hindu Society of Minnesota should be separate--you can try to start that article, but you can't just rewrite/rename this article to be about a different topic, I'm sorry. Alyo (chat·edits) 23:53, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Eehuiio (11:23, 25 March 2024)
How do I put two flags in an info box? --Eehuiio (talk) 11:23, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Eehuiio, which article (and flags) are you talking about. Alyo (chat·edits) 13:42, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
Vienna, as it seems to have two flags. One looks like Indonesia flag, but with Austrian Red, and the other is the same, but with the coat of arms in the center Eehuiio (talk) 18:15, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- Vienna, Austria? What flag do you want to add, because I already see a flag and the coat of arms. Alyo (chat·edits) 18:28, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- Flag_of_Salzburg,_Vienna,_Vorarlberg.svg
- Add that with the current flag, as Vienna has two flags. Eehuiio (talk) 19:36, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
- Ahh, I see. So it appears that the infobox (it's Template:Infobox settlement) only has one place to insert a flag, so you would actually just be changing the flag from the flag that's in there now to the new flag. Do you want to start a discussion on the talk page about that? Alyo (chat·edits) 19:43, 25 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Filiposnibbor (09:06, 26 March 2024)
Hallo Alyo, could you please advise me about the correct way to edit an existing article to include a reference to a published book on the topic. I was planning to include the name of the book, the author, publisher, date first published and ISBN and a very bride description of the book. Is anything else recommended. --Filiposnibbor (talk) 09:06, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Filiposnibbor, it sounds like you're looking for Template:Cite book. First, you will enclose everything in these "ref" tags:
<ref> ... </ref>
. Inside of that, you can fill in the various parameters here:{{cite book |last= |first= |author-link= |date= |title= |url= |location= |publisher= |page= |isbn=}}
. So the whole thing will look something like this:<ref>{{cite book |last=Bloggs |first=Joe |author-link=Joe Bloggs |date=1974 |title=Book of Bloggs}}</ref>
. If you click the link to the book cite template, you'll see that there are a whole bunch of other parameters you can use if necessary/helpful, but generally author/title/publisher/ISBN if you can find it/page you're citing to/date is more than enough! Let me know if that makes sense. Which article are you trying to edit? Alyo (chat·edits) 13:52, 26 March 2024 (UTC)- Thank you. It is the article on the Burke and Wills expedition. After adding the book reference using the template you recommended (thank you), I was surprised to discover that there is already a section headed ‘further reading’ which comes after the references. Most scientific journals put the list of references at the end of an article. I wonder how many people don’t scroll down further once they reach the references section and miss the subsequent section(s) like me! 90.255.16.34 (talk) 16:35, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- You did it perfectly! And yes, I agree--it would be preferable if people (like what you were doing) would actually read through some of the books we've linked to in that "Further reading" section and actually add information and citations into the body of the article. Alyo (chat·edits) 18:24, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Aviationaddict1 (05:14, 29 March 2024)
Hello. I do not understand why we need to edit pages and also have no idea in how to do it. Kindly, could you teach me? --Aviationaddict1 (talk) 05:14, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @Aviationaddict1, well first of all, you don't need to do anything :) However, editors on wikipedia often enjoy researching and writing about topics they are passionate about. The easiest way to start is either to find a topic that you enjoy, and begin improving articles there, or find a category of articles that need help in a specific way and begin working on those. Special:Homepage might be a good place to start. Alyo (chat·edits) 17:02, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- Well, i do like planes alot. I only have one question. Is it possible to edit on mobile devices or is it like a PC exclusive? Aviationaddict1 (talk) 17:04, 29 March 2024 (UTC)
- Very possible to edit on your phone. It might be easier on a computer because of the typing and characters, but there are quite a few editors who edit mostly on their phones. Alyo (chat·edits) 17:54, 29 March 2024 (UTC)

- Hi, as a general rule, don't do april fool's jokes in the text of articles themselves. If you want to do things on your own page or talk page, or in conjunction with other editors that's fine (for example, the Did You Know feature on the front page is always a little funny), but vandalism is still vandalism on April 1. New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024
Hello Alyo,
Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.
Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.
Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.
It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!
2023 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.
Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.
Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
Reminders:
- You can access live chat with patrollers on the New Pages Patrol Discord.
- Consider adding the project discussion page to your watchlist.
- To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

How do I create a reference? --Ross10201 (talk) 01:18, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Ross10201, do you have a specific page you were working on? Generally what we do is put a reference template inside "ref" tags, like so:
<ref> [reference template/content] </ref>
. If you tell me what kind of reference you were trying to create I can walk you through it a little more. Alyo (chat·edits) 03:14, 8 April 2024 (UTC)- Hello! I have no specific page to work on. There are a number of tools in the editing software that make adding refs very quick and easy, so give that page a read and let me know if I can answer any questions. - Web browsers can use tools called extensions. There is now a Chrome extension called Citation Needed which you can use to see if an online statement is supported by a Wikipedia article. This is a small experiment to see if Wikipedia can be used this way. Because it is a small experiment, it can only be used in Chrome in English.
- A new Edit Recovery feature has been added to all wikis, available as a user preference. Once you enable it, your in-progress edits will be stored in your web browser, and if you accidentally close an editing window or your browser or computer crashes, you will be prompted to recover the unpublished text. Please leave any feedback on the project talk page. This was the #8 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey.
- Initial results of Edit check experiments have been published. Edit Check is now deployed as a default feature at the wikis that tested it. Let us know if you want your wiki to be part of the next deployment of Edit check. [48][49]
- Readers using the Minerva skin on mobile will notice there has been an improvement in the line height across all typography settings. [50]

hello! I want to edit a column of a table about films. the thing is, I don't know how to turn columns green or white (as in whenever the film is still in cinemas or not.) can you help me? --Iamamodforjellymario (talk) 07:08, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Iamamodforjellymario, are you looking at List of Japanese films of 2023? When you edit, for example, the top table, one entry looks like this:
- |3
- | style="background:#b6fcb6;" |The Boy and the Heron
- |$138,635,564
- |[reference removed]
- |-
- That part I've bolded, the "style=", is where it's telling that line to have a green background. If you copy that into the same place in the other entries (so second line, after the number and before the |FILM NAME portion, it will add the color. Let me know if that makes sense! Problems
- Between 2 April and 8 April, on wikis using Flagged Revisions, the "Reverted" tag was not applied to undone edits. In addition, page moves, protections and imports were not autoreviewed. This problem is now fixed. [54][55]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 April. It will be on all wikis from 18 April (calendar). [56][57]
- Default category sort keys will now affect categories added by templates placed in footnotes. Previously footnotes used the page title as the default sort key even if a different default sort key was specified (category-specific sort keys already worked). [58]
- A new variable
page_last_edit_age
will be added to abuse filters. It tells how many seconds ago the last edit to a page was made. [59]
Future changes
- Volunteer developers are kindly asked to update the code of their tools and features to handle temporary accounts. Learn more.
- Four database fields will be removed from database replicas (including Quarry). This affects only the
abuse_filter
andabuse_filter_history
tables. Some queries might need to be updated. [60]

Question from Dsaxon06 (00:23, 16 April 2024)
Hi, nice to meet you. I've been away on holiday, but excited to get back to editing. Is there a tool/plugin you use to quickly find typos and spelling mistakes? I get a lot of pages come up in my suggested pages to edit, but don't know how to quickly find mistakes to fix. --Dsaxon06 (talk) 00:23, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Dsaxon06, I don't have a specific plugin I use, but there are some tools (like WP:AutoWikiBrowser) that you can get access to when you have a little more experience. If you're specifically looking for typos, you could follow some of the instructions here, which basically involve searching the encyclopedia for a common misspelling (like imediately instead of immediately) and making the change as you find it. However, I tend to just fix typos as I come across them in my normal WP use. I generally make my edits by either editing a page I'm interested in, or working on articles that have been tagged with a specific issue (like Category:All articles needing copy edit). 2 questions in 1
Hey😎 how do you edit the titles of pages? I can’t find a option. Also, I don’t know if this illegal, but I’m asking the second question..... how do you make these thingies that describe stuff about a book? for example:Dune (novel) i’m Pretty sure the information is somewhere, but i can’t find it. Also, I’m using an iPad. Does that change things? Iamamodforjellymario (talk) 20:56, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Iamamodforjellymario when you say title, do you mean like "Dune (novel)" being the title of that article? We move pages, although if the move will be controversial at all you should start a discussion first. For the second question, I'm not sure I follow--what on that page are you talking about? Alyo (chat·edits) 21:07, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
- Well, I meant that Dune (novel)’s template (the table thingy) is the example for the second question. I want to add a template on this page:The Garbage Chronicles. As for the first question, this is the page:SmartVision. I hope this cleared everything up, and i’ll start a discussion first.🔜 Iamamodforjellymario (talk) 21:41, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
- Ahh, do you mean the WP:infobox? on the right side of the page at the top? Dune uses {{Infobox book}}, and you can copy the template on that page and then add it to the Garbage Chon page, filling in information as you have it. Alyo (chat·edits) 03:21, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
- Yep, I was talking about the infobox.😀🎂 also, sorry, I haven’t mentioned this, but I use visual editor. 😗Do you know a way?🇦🇲✌🏼 Iamamodforjellymario (talk) 04:27, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
- To be entirely honest, I only use the source editor when I'm editing big templates like those--you could set that by going to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing and then unchecking "Enable the visual editor" (and rechecking it when you're done, if you want!) Alyo (chat·edits) 03:28, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
- Ok I’ll try... also, you’re at 5266th now Iamamodforjellymario (talk) 04:37, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
- If you want to mess around with the template (and the other version of the editor), WP:Sandbox is a good place to go. Just make any edits you want there, it's a little testing area. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:20, 18 April 2024 (UTC)

Question from Rschimmel (04:46, 23 April 2024)
hello, I immigrated from South Africa to Australia 2 years ago and am having difficulty getting back onto Wikipedia, a site I've used for many years in South Africa from your icon on my desktop. That Wikipedia icon has disappeared since getting here and I'd like to get it back. I've just turned 84 on 20 April and have some difficulty getting back onto Wikipedia, I suppose because of some short term memory loss. I've had to keep my South African mail address because i get a monthly Life Insurance annuity from Liberty Life insurance South Africa, which they won't or can't send to customers like me in a different country. That's why I've had to keep my South African email address at mWeb South Africa. --Rschimmel (talk) 04:46, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Rschimmel, I'm not sure I can help--I'm only here to answer questions about editing Wikipedia. Alyo (chat·edits) 13:48, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
Question from Chocooooo (17:31, 26 April 2024)
Hey! I just came to know about editing and all, And I am really interested in it. But this UI is really a big problem to me and I am confused with many things like the user home page customising, the talk pages, etc... So, I just wanted to know if you have some tips or guides or share your experience of dealing with these problems when you joined newly, etc... --Chocooooo (talk) 17:31, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Chocooooo! To be quite honest, I wouldn't worry about the user pages for now--the only thing you need to know is that your user talk page (User talk:Chocooooo) is where people will leave you messages, and if you want to leave someone else a message you'd use their talk page. Like right now we're on mine, and you can add pages to your Watchlist to then see when other people edit those pages. You'll get a much better sense for how to edit Wikipedia by just going about your normal process, finding pages you're interested in, or tasks you want to work on. Then when you decide you want to put something on your userpage you'll have a much better sense of how the "wiki-code" works! Do you have any particular areas that you're interested in working on? Alyo (chat·edits) 18:11, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Alyo,
- I was just trying different things and now I think that I can do something related to movies, actors, etc.
- I am really amazed by your contributions. I saw you are here since 2010, How do you feel about your past 15 years; As I am 17, and from past few months, I am feeling a bit depressed that how fast the time is passing on. Sorry for this out of this topic discussion... j
- By the way, Thanks for your guidance! Chocooooo (talk) 18:58, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Chocooooo that's a great question, and I'm not sure I have a great answer haha. That feeling won't change, but growing and learning from your experiences is a part of life, not to mention Wikipedia! Alyo (chat·edits) 15:45, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
Requesting assistance on User:Alyo/sandbox/Odrek Rwabwogo
Greetings mentor @Alyo After a long break away from the Odrek Rwabwogo draft, I decided to resume editing. However, after the original article was deleted nine months ago due to the COI I stated and later explained as a non-issue to the admin that deleted the article, I doubt I will be able to have the energy or drive to recreate it despite my habit of finishing what I start. Can you please help me edit and get some users to contribute? I decided to leave room for you and other editors to contribute for a better, wholesome article. Niitwe (talk) 08:14, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Niitwe, don't worry about it if you don't have time--there's no rush and we have no deadline :) You've very helpfully re-added the sources to the draft article, and at some point when I have time I'll come back to that and build it up again. However, if you want, you can continue to just come back whenever you have time and energy, even if you're just doing a little bit at a time. If it helps, I think the article will end up being much shorter than it was anyway if we recreate it. Alyo (chat·edits) 17:20, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Alyo Absolutely right. It will be better short so that other editors get the chance to contribute with time. Afterall. there's no deadline.
- Thanks for the support as always! Niitwe (talk) 11:22, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
Expected goals. What is xG?
The first version of the "What is xG?" chapter was better. Much better. Maybe you can help to fix it and bring it back. Sorry, English is not my first language. Regards. Craftsoft (talk) 18:57, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Craftsoft, one of the problems is that the sources you included were not reliable. One was a Nigerian newspaper and the other was just a russian-language home page. I'm happy to include more of the content you had if we can find appropriate sources. Alyo (chat·edits) 20:57, 30 April 2024 (UTC)
- Hi! Thanks for the reply.
- Weekly Football is the central publication in the USSR and Russia. Circulation 235360. Football weekly
- I think this is the first time it's been published xG (Probable Score) in the official journals. Definition of "Probable score", "Balance of power", etc: Football weekly, N16, p.9.
- Regular publication of xG (Probable Score) since 2012 Russian Championship plus European Championship 2012, etc. In total about 30 publications in Football weekly: Football weekly, N30, p.11
- Simultaneous mentioning of xG is a "Probable score". These are synonyms.СССР – Англия (17.06.58). Статистика матча, xG/ (3m 10s)
- There are more links, but this is more than enough.
- I lectured on xG (Probable Score) and professional football statistics in 2014 at Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism.
- Thanks for your guidance! Craftsoft (talk) 18:43, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Craftsoft, thanks for the additional information. In this case, I think it's still probably best if we use other sources. There are plenty english-language sources available on the topic of xG, and those are obviously more accessible for readers on the english wikipedia than russian sources. As one note, the term "probable score" is not one that is used with any frequency by english language sources. That might be more common in russian, but in the US/UK that specific term isn't used in the same way. If you have some text that you feel is particularly worth of inclusion though, I would be happy to try to find english sources that we could cite to. Alyo (chat·edits) 02:35, 7 May 2024 (UTC)
Question from Iamamodforjellymario (06:31, 2 May 2024)
hello alyo, I'm making my user page, but I don't know how to do userboxes and the guides aren't helping me. how do you add these pictures to the text in the userboxes? how do you make a userbox? --Iamamodforjellymario (talk) 06:31, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Iamamodforjellymario, are you using the visual editor? I'll be completely honest, I have no idea how to do that in the visual editor. When you click edit, the button right next to "Publish changes" that looks like a pencil will allow you to switch to "source editing", which is what I would recommend if you're trying to edit with userboxes and other templates. The easiest thing to do is just go to Wikipedia:Userboxes/Galleries/alphabetical, find some userboxes you like, and then copy them onto your page. So if you found your way to the list of userboxes at Wikipedia:Userboxes/Games/Video games/Franchises/Mario, you would just copy the text on the left, like {{User:Secret Saturdays/enclosed instructions}}, to display the userbox on the right. If you want to make your own userbox, it's a little more complicated. You could follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Userboxes#Design:_How_to_construct_the_box to make one from scratch or you could do what I did once and just copy a userbox that someone else made and then just make edits until it looks like what you want. For example you could go to User:Secret Saturdays/enclosed instructions, click edit, copy the text into a new page in your own userspace (like User:Iamamodforjellymario/Userboxes/First) and save it there. Does that make sense? Alyo (chat·edits) 13:29, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
- yep, thanks! I'll start making my UBXs now! Iamamodforjellymario (talk) 22:05, 2 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from CostaChicaGro (19:17, 24 May 2024)
How do I create a page --CostaChicaGro (talk) 19:17, 24 May 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @CostaChicaGro, you can use the WP:Article Wizard, which will guide you through the process of starting a new page, but please note that Wikipedia is not for promotion, and the article will only be accepted if you include multiple independent sources discussing the topic in some detail. For example, magazine profiles or newspapers would work. However, links to social media or blogs will not be enough. Alyo (chat·edits) 14:06, 27 May 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Several bugs related to the latest updates to the UploadWizard on Wikimedia Commons have been fixed. For more information, see T365107 and T365119.
- In March 2024 a new addPortlet API was added to allow gadgets to create new portlets (menus) in the skin. In certain skins this can be used to create dropdowns. Gadget developers are invited to try it and give feedback.
- Some CSS in the Minerva skin has been removed to enable easier community configuration. Interface editors should check the rendering on mobile devices for aspects related to the classes:
.collapsible
,.multicol
,.reflist
,.coordinates
,.topicon
. Further details are available on replacement CSS if it is needed.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 May. It will be on all wikis from 30 May (calendar). [61][62]
- When you visit a wiki where you don't yet have a local account, local rules such as edit filters can sometimes prevent your account from being created. Starting this week, MediaWiki takes your global rights into account when evaluating whether you can override such local rules. [63]

Trent Alexander-Arnold
I removed what you restored. Please see WP:PUFFERY. --Hammersoft (talk) 15:34, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Hammersoft I disagree that it's puffery--it's clearly sourced and is a factual statement about his notability. If there's specific word choice in there that you disagree with (regarded? best?) then make an edit, but consensus on that page is that the sourcing and content in the body justify a statement about his perception in world football. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:46, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- A cursory review of the talk page doesn't show there being a discussion regarding this phrase. Can you point me to one? As to the phrasing, it's unnecessary. "Regarded as..." treats such a phrasing as monolithic, as if the entire world thinks this is the case. The entire world doesn't think this is the case. While there might be an appropriate place to mention a given news outlet or a given coach stating that (might), it's inappropriate to monolithically state he's one of the best. Also, this is tangential but you should be aware, there is an editor engaged in mass sockpuppetry/block evasion/IP hopping who is trying very hard to add such puffery items to a number of football player bios. --Hammersoft (talk) 16:08, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- I'm referring more to the history of IPs trying to remove that phrase and various editors retaining it. Apologies for not having a list of specific diffs, but as you can see from the page history it's a very heavily vandalized page. I've added more sources here and can work on the language. I have generally read "regarded" to be descriptive of the consensus of neutral soccer journalists/analysts/commentators, not rival fans on Twitter. Not everyone likes Michael Jackson or Shakespeare, but we still say "they are regarded as..." etc etc. Point taken though, I think there are other statements that the sources support.
- As regards the sockpuppet, the content (if not the sources) has been on the page since 2021, so I would assume it's not them? Alyo (chat·edits) 16:48, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- Maybe, maybe not. I don't know. I've only just recently became aware of the problem. I've blocked one account for being a sock of an account I'm 99% certain is a sock, but don't know the true master just yet. --Hammersoft (talk) 17:15, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Ukudoks (22:30, 10 June 2024)
Salutations :@Alyo: I would like to ask a question if possible. --Ukudoks (talk) 22:30, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Ukudoks, what is your question? Alyo (chat·edits) 00:36, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Alyo My question is as follows: Is it possible to become an employee of the Wikimedia Foundation? and if so would you as a long term contributor recommend it? --Ukudoks (talk) 02:39, 11 June 2024 (UTC)
- I'm sure it is possible--it's a non-profit with a bunch of open positions listed here that you can apply to, same as any other organization. I don't really think my perspective as a long term contributor is really relevant, tbh. Are you qualified for the position? Are you looking to get into non-profit work (or do you have experience already)? If so, go ahead. Your day to day won't be as influenced by what's happening on Wikipedia as you might think. In reality, you'd be doing fundraising, social media, coding, or data management, or whatever the job calls for, and the fact that the Foundations "runs" Wikipedia probably would have very little impact on your day to day. Alyo (chat·edits) 03:08, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Over the next three weeks, dark mode will become available for all users, both logged-in and logged-out, starting with the mobile web version. This fulfils one of the top-requested community wishes, and improves low-contrast reading and usage in low-light settings. As part of these changes, dark mode will also work on User-pages and Portals. There is more information in the latest Web team update. [64]
- Logged-in users can now set global preferences for the text-size and dark-mode, thanks to a combined effort across Foundation teams. This allows Wikimedians using multiple wikis to set up a consistent reading experience easily, for example by switching between light and dark mode only once for all wikis. [65]
- If you use a very old web browser some features might not work on the Wikimedia wikis. This affects Internet Explorer 11 and versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari older than 2016. This change makes it possible to use new CSS features and to send less code to all readers. [66][67]
- Wikipedia Admins can customize local wiki configuration options easily using Community Configuration. Community Configuration was created to allow communities to customize how some features work, because each language wiki has unique needs. At the moment, admins can configure Growth features on their home wikis, in order to better recruit and retain new editors. More options will be provided in the coming months. [68]
- Editors interested in language issues that are related to Unicode standards, can now discuss those topics at a new conversation space in MediaWiki.org. The Wikimedia Foundation is now a member of the Unicode Consortium, and the coordination group can collaboratively review the issues discussed and, where appropriate, bring them to the attention of the Unicode Consortium.
- One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in Mandailing (
w:btm:
) [69]

Question from Smarchez (14:48, 15 July 2024)
Hi there. I need to change the Header on Sir Michael Lyons page as he is no longer BBC Chairman and I want to take that out. How do I do that? Many thanks, Sally --Smarchez (talk) 14:48, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Smarchez, you're referring to the title of the page? That is used to identify him relative to all other Michael Lyons, and should not be changed unless there's a better identifier. It does not mean that Wikipedia still thinks he is currently BBC Chair. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:42, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Smarchez, I'm going to have to undo your edits to Lyon's page, as there are a number of problems with the content you added. However, if you can specify where the inaccuracies are, we can make the edits again (properly!) Alyo (chat·edits) 16:00, 15 July 2024 (UTC)

Feature News
- Stewards can now globally block accounts. Before the change only IP addresses and IP ranges could be blocked globally. Global account blocks are useful when the blocked user should not be logged out. Global locks (a similar tool logging the user out of their account) are unaffected by this change. The new global account block feature is related to the Temporary Accounts project, which is a new type of user account that replaces IP addresses of unregistered editors that are no longer made public.
- Later this week, Wikimedia site users will notice that the Interface of FlaggedRevs (also known as "Pending Changes") is improved and consistent with the rest of the MediaWiki interface and Wikimedia's design system. The FlaggedRevs interface experience on mobile and Minerva skin was inconsistent before it was fixed and ported to Codex by the WMF Growth team and some volunteers. [71]
- Wikimedia site users can now submit account vanishing requests via GlobalVanishRequest. This feature is used when a contributor wishes to stop editing forever. It helps you hide your past association and edit to protect your privacy. Once processed, the account will be locked and renamed. [72]
- Have you tried monitoring and addressing vandalism in Wikipedia using your phone? A Diff blog post on Patrolling features in the Mobile App highlights some of the new capabilities of the feature, including swiping through a feed of recent changes and a personal library of user talk messages for use when patrolling from your phone.
- Wikimedia contributors and GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, and museums) organisations can now learn and measure the impact Wikimedia Commons is having towards creating quality encyclopedic content using the Commons Impact Metrics analytics dashboard. The dashboard offers organizations analytics on things like monthly edits in a category, the most viewed files, and which Wikimedia articles are using Commons images. As a result of these new data dumps, GLAM organisation can more reliably measure their return on investment for programs bringing content into the digital Commons. [73]
Project Updates
- Come share your ideas for improving the wikis on the newly reopened Community Wishlist. The Community Wishlist is Wikimedia’s forum for volunteers to share ideas (called wishes) to improve how the wikis work. The new version of the wishlist is always open, works with both wikitext and Visual Editor, and allows wishes in any language.

- Have you ever wondered how Wikimedia software works across over 300 languages? This is 253 languages more than the Google Chrome interface, and it's no accident. The Language and Product Localization Team at the Wikimedia Foundation supports your work by adapting all the tools and interfaces in the MediaWiki software so that contributors in our movement who translate pages and strings can translate them and have the sites in all languages. Read more about the team and their upcoming work on Diff.
- How can Wikimedia build innovative and experimental products while maintaining such heavily used websites? A recent blog post by WMF staff Johan Jönsson highlights the work of the WMF Future Audience initiative, where the goal is not to build polished products but test out new ideas, such as a ChatGPT plugin and Add a Fact, to help take Wikimedia into the future.

Question from MabelRadel5b (00:00, 26 July 2024)
Hello, I'm trying to create a new section for the non-profit I help that is called Rock Against Racism, but they're always restoring my revision. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Against_Racism this is the page and this is our new website: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_Against_Racism can you help me with any advice to make it better and not having it restored? my edits were about Current Days/Resource Room/Impact and future goals. Please and thank you, appreciate your time so much --MabelRadel5b (talk) 00:00, 26 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @MabelRadel5b, Wikipedia is not generally the place to write this kind of content. We are not a promotional vehicle, and generally only include content when it has been covered by independent, reliable sources. News organizations, academic, impartial experts, etc. If the new organization is, for example, profiled by the Guardian, then maybe that would be appropriate to write about. At present though, there are no sources for the content besides the new website. Basically, you don't use Wikipedia to make something notable, Wikipedia writes about things that are already notable. Question from Beermantank (15:37, 30 July 2024)
Let's say I want to write an article on Ruben sim. Where do I get the citations on something so limited on citations? --Beermantank (talk) 15:37, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Beermantank, you're referring to the youtuber? Wikipedia requires all content to be verifiable, so if there are no citations then he probably isn't an appropriate topic for an article. There aren't many reliable news sources writing about youtubers, streamers, etc, so often Wikipedia isn't the right place to write about them. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:56, 30 July 2024 (UTC)

Question from Cjohnston86 (15:56, 13 August 2024)
Hi there! I have a lot to learn here.
I'm trying to help my company add the company to Wikipedia but they keep getting blocked. SO I want to take a stab at it.
Is there any documents or articles I can read that will explain the guidelines to me to avoid being blocked? (the reason is Spam Content). --Cjohnston86 (talk) 15:56, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Cjohnston86, as a general rule, Wikipedia is not a good place to write about a business. We often say that the site isn't a directory, the yellow pages, or a place to promote businesses. Because of that, we generally only accept topics that have been covered by independent, reliable sources. In other words, a business needs to have been written about by multiple newspapers, magazines, etc, in order to be "notable". I'm guessing that the article wasn't accepted because it didn't meet the guidelines here: WP:NCORP (with the specific rule here). Alyo (chat·edits) 18:49, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
- this is a great help! Thank you. It’s a well established company with many independent articles to verify information. I think perhaps it wasn’t written as well as it should’ve been and looking at the content was more “brochure” style. This definitely helps. 82.45.8.57 (talk) 19:42, 13 August 2024 (UTC)
Question from Officialnutnice on Talk:Skillibeng (14:10, 14 August 2024)
Question from WilliamMGoodman (18:41, 15 August 2024)
I am new to contributing to Wikipedia, and enjoying finding pertinent references, etc., for articles. But I'm wondering if there is a more flexible way to find articles needing references in my areas of interest. Although the Wiki screen I'm using says, at the top, that there's thousands of relevant articles fitting my categories, it in fact only presents details for a couple of dozen, one-by-one, which I can access. I wish there was more flexibility. Also, if I specify, for example, a region of interest and a topic of interest, the algorithm seems to treat the criteria separately..... whereas my preference is to find articles that are _both_ in my topic _and_ my region of interest, which would considerably filter the articles to peruse. Can this be done? --WilliamMGoodman (talk) 18:41, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @WilliamMGoodman, welcome to Wikipedia! Are you using Special:Homepage? That algorithm on that page is unfortunately quite limited (as you're finding out) and seems to repeat the same few articles. Let me make sure I'm understanding correctly first: are you looking for articles that, e.g., both need references and are related to European history? If so, I'm going to walk through how I would find articles like that, and you can tell me if this is helpful or not. I often start at the Wikipedia:Task Center, which lists a series of tasks and then links to random articles that have issues in that task area. So the first task on that page, "Fact-Checking", has a link on the right side allowing you to "Go to a random page in Category:All articles lacking sources". You could start there, or you could also click on the maintenance category, . This takes you to a hidden WP category containing every article that is currently tagged with the {{Unreferenced}} template. However, at the top of that category page there is also a yellow box that directs you to articles lacking sources in a certain topic area. If you click "Europe" it takes you to this search result, which you could also recreate by entering
articletopic:europe incategory:"All articles lacking sources"
into the Wikipedia search bar. This also suggests that you can do the same for other "articletopic" fields, although I don't know where that list is off the top of my head. Let me know if this makes sense/helps/isn't what you are looking for. Alyo (chat·edits) 19:48, 15 August 2024 (UTC)- Thanks, Alyo. Your reply definitely addresses my question. By experimenting, I've also found an extra step that could be added, which might be of interest to other readers, as well: . By the steps you showed me, I could, e.g., quickly scan the list of all articles re Europe needing references; but one can tweak further to find a list that's restricted to all the articles-about-music+Europe. It's easiest to do by entering a search command directly, of this format, into the Wikipedia Search Bar: articletopic:music and Europe incategory:"All articles lacking sources" As far as I can tell, you can substitute any of the valid categories into the "music" and/or "Europe" in that example. WilliamMGoodman (talk) 21:11, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- P.S. It appears that for my idea, above, you may have to use dashes for multi-word categories. E.g. "north-america" rather than "North America" WilliamMGoodman (talk) 21:19, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- it's always nice when a search has more boolean capabilities than you were aware of! Alyo (chat·edits) 22:33, 15 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Alyo,
- I've just posted substantial additions to an existing page for "Arne Dahl (Politician)", and have included relevant citations. Nonetheless, the page still is flagged as a "stub", and still says it has no references. (There are now 13 references.) Is there a a Wiki monitor (human or automated) who will eventually see the page, and update those flags? Thanks WilliamMGoodman (talk) 02:20, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @WilliamMGoodman, there's no automated process, so on a page like that with not a ton of page views or other editors likely watching it it's quite unlikely anyone else will remove those tags for a while. Feel free to remove the {{unreferenced}} template at the top, because that obviously doesn't apply anymore, and the {{NorthDakota-politician-stub}} at the very bottom can also be removed. Good job! Question from DarkPicture (16:54, 19 August 2024)
Hello Alyo, I would like to add further sources to the wikipedia artikel on the serial killer Michel Stokx because as it stands now, Stokx has a typo where there is a c like this "Stockx". It is a very minor mistake and most people would not care but given this case lies somewhat personal I would like to have it corrected and add sources from newssites like HLN and such. Thanks for the help and your time. --DarkPicture (talk) 16:54, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @DarkPicture, do you have any sources that clearly show how Michel Stockx spelled his name? The sources and my google search seem to show the C. Particularly since that's how it's spelled on the Dutch and French Wikipedias. Alyo (chat·edits) 02:21, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

Feature news
- Editors who want to re-use references but with different details such as page numbers, will be able to do so by the end of 2024, using a new sub-referencing feature. You can read more about the project and how to test the prototype.
- Editors using tracking categories to identify which pages use specific extensions may notice that six of the categories have been renamed to make them more easily understood and consistent. These categories are automatically added to pages that use specialized MediaWiki extensions. The affected names are for: DynamicPageList, Kartographer, Phonos, RSS, Score, WikiHiero. Wikis that have created the category locally should rename their local creation to match. Thanks to Pppery for these improvements. [74]
- Technical volunteers who edit modules and want to get a list of the categories used on a page, can now do so using the
categories
property ofmw.title objects
. This enables wikis to configure workflows such as category-specific edit notices. Thanks to SD001 for these improvements. [75][76]
Bugs status
- Your help is needed to check if any pages need to be moved or deleted. A maintenance script was run to clean up unreachable pages (due to Unicode issues or introduction of new namespaces/namespace aliases). The script tried to find appropriate names for the pages (e.g. by following the Unicode changes or by moving pages whose titles on Wikipedia start with
Talk:WP:
so that their titles start withWikipedia talk:
), but it may have failed for some pages, and moved them to Special:PrefixIndex/T195546/ instead. Your community should check if any pages are listed there, and move them to the correct titles, or delete them if they are no longer needed. A full log (including pages for which appropriate names could be found) is available in phab:P67388. - Editors who volunteer as mentors to newcomers on their wiki are once again able to access lists of potential mentees who they can connect with to offer help and guidance. This functionality was restored thanks to a bug fix. Thank you to Mbch331 for filing the bug report. You can read about that, and 18 other community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.
Project updates
- The application deadline for the Product & Technology Advisory Council (PTAC) has been extended to September 16. Members will help by providing advice to Foundation Product and Technology leadership on short and long term plans, on complex strategic problems, and help to get feedback from more contributors and technical communities. Selected members should expect to spend roughly 5 hours per month for the Council, during the one year pilot. Please consider applying, and spread the word to volunteers you think would make a positive contribution to the committee.

Question from WilliamMGoodman (20:24, 21 August 2024)
Hi Alyo,
Today I posted some revisions, with references, to a Wikipedia article on "John Schoolcraft (Assemblyman)". For some reason when I tried to click "Publish", even though my name was displayed on the upper right of my screen, Wikipedia said I wasn't logged in. Why would I be considered logged out if my name was still displayed (and also I'd asked when I logged in to stay logged in for a year)? --WilliamMGoodman (talk) 20:24, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @WilliamMGoodman, I'm not sure, without knowing more about your browser/local tech issues. It shouldn't be happening, so either you've discovered some sort of weird glitch or the browser briefly logged you out, or there was some sort of other cookie issue. I can't say it's ever happened to me. Alyo (chat·edits) 21:44, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
Question from Unkn0wn Gh0st333 (20:36, 23 August 2024)
Hello Aylo, I am new to Wikipedia but have made my account today cause I realize there is no article for a game I play and quite enjoy. Do you have any advice I should take for creating an adequate page for it? --Unkn0wn Gh0st333 (talk) 20:36, 23 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Unkn0wn Gh0st333, which game are you talking about? As a general rule, Wikipedia articles require a few sources covering the topic, published by reliable, independent third parties (like newspapers, books, magazines, online news orgs, etc). So the first step would be to find those kinds of sources covering the game. If you cannot find those sources, it's very unlikely that the article will be accepted.
