Number of frames in final
editWhere did you get 19 from? Certainly Neal Foulds said that it's 19 in the Eurosport commentary but he does get things wrong. Both WST and snooker.org still say 17, and they are "reliable" sources. Alan (talk) 13:34, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- I did get it from the commentary. There's not much definitive source on it, though. Hopefully WST can clarify this before the final tomorrow. AmethystZhou (talk) 13:54, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- OK - well it's easy enough to change. Alan (talk) 13:56, 14 October 2023 (UTC)
- snooker.org now have it at 19 so that's good enough. Alan (talk) 17:31, 14 October 2023 (UTC)

editWhere did that information come from? Alan (talk) 19:20, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

- I have created the 2023 Snooker Shoot Out (2023–24 season) article, and now the disambiguation page should be fine, thanks! AmethystZhou (talk) 21:17, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
Archiving
editYour archive for Ronnie's tweet doesn't work (for me anyway). Alan (talk) 11:10, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Good catch, looks like Web Archive is having some issue with Twitter at the moment. We don't really need Ronnie's tweet as a source though, as long as news outlets report it. AmethystZhou (talk) 11:14, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- I think you should just delete the twitter reference pending other sources. Alan (talk) 11:22, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
- Sounds good, I replaced it with an article that Eurosport just published. AmethystZhou (talk) 11:32, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Archiving scores.wst.tv/matches citations
edit@AmethystZhou: I've made a list of all of this seasons' citations from https://scores.wst.tv/matches/ which you can find in my sandbox4. There are 23 of them, mostly (but not all) created by me. Some are named and some are not. If you feel like working your magic snapshot archiving on these, feel free to edit the citations in my sandbox4 to test them prior to updating the relevent articles. Enjoy! Alan (talk) 11:23, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
- All done! Thanks for compiling these. If you sign up for an account at web.archive.org, then there will be extra options like "also save screenshot" when you archive a page. AmethystZhou (talk) 12:43, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
- Good work. I'm happy to let you do that. Will you update the relevant articles, or will I do that? Alan (talk) 12:53, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
- All done! You can remove those from your sandbox now.. AmethystZhou (talk) 16:23, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

- OK - I've signed up and done one of these (for the 2nd semi-final). Bit slow and fiddly though isn't it. I don't seem to be able to archive any of the Eurosport citations though. Any idea why they don't work? Alan (talk) 10:34, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Yep, make sure to click on the screenshot link to check that it worked. Sometimes it fails and captures the blank page just like the regular snapshot, and you have to wait 45 minutes to try again (ugh!). I'm not sure about Eurosport either, when I try to archive anything there it always capture the geoblocked page instead (It's quite funny that this page has been archived over 86,000 times haha). Maybe the WebArchive server is in the US or somewhere that is geoblocked by Eurosport? But there are a few Eurosport links that have been successfully archived, like this one. Not sure how, though. AmethystZhou (talk) 11:35, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- That is really annoying. Might be worth trying your screenshot trick on those. Alan (talk) 11:48, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
- Just tried that - didn't work :-( Alan (talk) 12:07, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

- Re: Eurosport. I think it's because archive.org is American, Eurosport is French, and we are in the UK. If somebody in mainland Europe has already saved an archive, we can use it. But we can't save one ourselves. Annoying. Alan (talk) 13:17, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- I'm actually in the US. But I tried saving Eurosport pages while connected to a VPN in France or Germany, and it still goes to the geoblocked page. I don't think it matters where we are, rather it depends on where the WebArchive server is. But on the other hand, I also have no idea how some of the pages were able to be saved... Background colours
editWell worth reading MOS:COLOR. "Ensure that color is not the only method used to communicate important information. Especially, do not use colored text or background unless its status is also indicated using another method ...". This is a "guideline" so not an absolute rule. Some of your edits to World Snooker Championship fail this. Basically youre not supposed to use just a coloured background. See eg Triple Crown (snooker) where some of the tables use a symbol in addition to the colour.Nigej (talk) 08:31, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for pointing that out. I wanted to highlight the dominant player in each era, such as Hendry. But I feel like adding asterisks or daggers after the names looks weird, especially if the highlighted player is the runner-up. Do you think I should just remove the highlights? AmethystZhou (talk) 08:41, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- Not a big deal. Might be an issue if someone wanted it to be a featured article of similar. Just pointing it out as an issue to be aware of. Often text is best, and additional colours, bold, italics, etc are not really that useful. Nigej (talk) 10:01, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
- I don't think it's useful to highlight Davis, Hendry and Selby without any explanation why; it doesn't offer any additional information and so is a bit confusing IMO. It's also inconsistent to highlight them but not Joe Davis, Fred Davis, Pulman or Reardon. (I don't think it would hard to find sources for the Davises and Hendry being dominant, but I'm less sure about the others.) Highlighting the class of '92 is perhaps more interesting, but I would echo the point about MOS:COLOR. Regards, BennyOnTheLoose (talk) 12:11, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
- I highlighted them since the section title mention they were the dominant player in each era, like "Steve Davis years (1981–1989)", "Stephen Hendry dominates (1990–1999)", etc. I also added daggers and double-daggers, those should suffice for MOS:COLOR, without making the tables confusing as I previously thought.. As for the earlier eras, maybe it's better suited for a discussion on the WSC talk page, but I think the sections for each era should have a short blurb to summarize the years, not just list who won each year chronologically. That way we can explain in the text that so and so was the dominant player(s) in that era. AmethystZhou (talk) 01:11, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

Welsh Open seeds
edit@AmethystZhou: Although snooker.org does not have the numbers yet, the way he normally does it would give (I think):

- Mark Selby
- Shaun Murphy
- Neil Robertson
- Mark Williams
- Kyren Wilson
- Ali Carter

- Zhang Anda
- Barry Hawkins
- Jack Lisowski
- Gary Wilson
- Tom Ford
- Hossein Vafaei
- Ryan Day
- Zhou Yuelong
- Noppon Saengkham
- Chris Wakelin
- Anthony McGill
- Ricky Walden
- Stuart Bingham
- Joe Perry
- Si Jiahui
- Matthew Selt
- Lyu Haotian
- Pang Junxu
- David Gilbert
Hope this helps. Alan (talk) 09:54, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
- Possibly Brecel would be seeded 2 since he's the WC - not sure. Alan (talk) 10:32, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for catching this! I made an error in my Excel spreadsheet and all of the seedings are shifted by 2... I'm correcting it right now. AmethystZhou (talk) 10:40, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
- I made the same errors on 2024 World Open.. All fixed now! AmethystZhou (talk) 10:49, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Seniors 900
editHello there how are you doing ?. Can you add the above event to the 2023/24 snooker season calendar please ?. It was the first event of the season for the seniors. It is similar to the Snooker Shootout but the frame lasts for 15 minutes which is 900 seconds hence the name. It was live on Channel 5 in the UK. Will you add it to the World Seniors Tour section please ?. It was played on 29 December all on one day. The venue was Epsom Racecourse in Epsom. Stephen Hendry beat Jimmy White 1-0 in the final. Can you add this event please ?. Thank you 92.251.145.53 (talk) 16:26, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

Masters 2024
editHi! Great work with the article. I hope I didn't get in the way too much. I was going to put the article through the GAN process (and maybe DYK if we expand it ever so slightly more). Did yourself (and potentially HurricaneHiggins want to co-nom the article for GAN? Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 22:48, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you! I'm still very new to all the nomination stuff, but I'd be happy to put myself forward. I tried to get Ronnie's UK win into DYK but that didn't work as it's deemed not noteworthy, and the UK article wasn't a GA. AmethystZhou (talk) 22:51, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- DYK isn't really for promoting things, its more for showing things that are new. I think we need another 500 characters or so and it'll be rife. I've done both hundreds of times, so I'll note your involvement in the pages. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 22:55, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- That should be no problem once we add some quotes and flesh out the frame-by-frame, once the BBC/Eurosport/WST etc. sources come out. Ronnie's incredible achievement deserves some front page recognition! AmethystZhou (talk) 22:57, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- It's there now, just had to squeak out a little more. Had to be 20100 characters and we were on like 19500 for ages. I've put the DYK nom out, and I'll sort the rest out in the morning. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 00:35, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
- Sounds great. I'm not sure if I should edit the nomination (the source code in the page says do not edit), but it'd be lovely if we can include a picture as well, such as this one. AmethystZhou (talk) 01:40, 15 January 2024 (UTC)
- It could be done, but that particular image of O'Sullivan has been on the main page at least five times now. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 10:18, 15 January 2024 (UTC)

- Happy to co-nominate if you tell me what I'd have to do! :-) HurricaneHiggins (talk) 23:04, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- Also, @Lee Vilenski, it would be great to get a review for the 2023 World Championship article. I know you nominated it, but it has been in the queue since last year, and it's only three more months until the next World Championship begins. HurricaneHiggins (talk) 23:08, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, I can't review it. I'll ask around and see if I can grab a favour. I'd usually have the item up at FAC by now. There's a massive backlog at GAN. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 23:10, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- In terms of noms, when someone opens up a GAN, just see if there's any of their points that you're happy to just fix. Shouldn't be too bad, but want to credit you both for good work. Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 23:11, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

DYK for 2024 Masters (snooker)
editOn 7 February 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 2024 Masters (snooker), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that after winning the 2024 Masters, Ronnie O'Sullivan is both the youngest and oldest winner of the tournament? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/2024 Masters (snooker). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 2024 Masters (snooker)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
Nicknames
edit@AmethystZhou: I see you've made some significant changes to the nicknames template. Well done, particularly regarding capitalisation and references. It might, however, be worth your while having a look at this discussion, with particular regard to limiting each entry to one nickname except in a very small number of special cases. Martin O'Donnell certainly didn't need both "the MOD" and "the Minister of Defence" so I've removed the former. Alan (talk) 08:34, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks! I think there's plenty of sources to support "JP" for Parrott, "Juddernaut" for Trump. I personally haven't heard "Maverick" for Maguire but there's quite a few news articles calling him that, plus the WST profile, so I added it. Although, I think many of these nicknames are not often used at all and there are barely any reference to them besides the WST page. If you look through the references, some had the old defunct WST player page despite them being a tour player with a current WST page, and it's because the current page no longer lists a nickname for them. Those might be prime candidate for removal IMO. AmethystZhou (talk) 18:18, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- @AmethystZhou: Please don't delete any without thorough research. Check with me first, as I have a database that I used to produce the list in the first place. A lot of work went into producing the list in this template as you can see from the archived thread. I agree with you about both Trump and Parrott, but I'm not sure about adding in "Maverick" for Maguire. He's always introduced as "On Fire", So that one could go. Alan (talk) 18:58, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- Absolutely, I won't make any substantial changes. Just thought that the list may need some pruning :D AmethystZhou (talk) 22:34, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- I've removed "the Maverick" to <!--hidden--> (for now), and changed the number of unbulleted lists from eight to seven. Alan (talk) 08:07, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
- Having a re-think about keeping "the Juddernaut" for Trump. He is always introduced as "the Ace in the Pack". Of the two references you have provided, one is a newspaper article from 13 years ago when he was just getting esablished, and the WST one from last month also refers to "the Ace in the Pack" in the prose. So I think that one could also go. What do you think? Alan (talk) 10:07, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
- I liked the Juddernaut nickname, but you are right that it was used much more earlier in his career (like the 2011 World final). I'm fine with it if you remove it, though. Personally, I think we should limit the nicknames to notable ones only, while emphasizing the most famous ones a bit more (Rocket, Hurricane, etc.) and put it in bold in the lead. I think that's what MOS:NICKNAME suggests. AmethystZhou (talk) 20:59, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Re players championship seedings
editActually, o’donnell can only be maximally 11th if he wins the welsh open. He’s guaranteed to be 19th on the one year list for reaching the final [with 35,000 points from the welsh], taking his current provisional total to 79,000. Winning the tournament will add 45,000 points to this, bringing it to 124,000: this is above higgins but below selby. Thus carter and selby will be 9th and 10th seeds no matter what. You can refer to https://www.snooker.org/res/index.asp?template=47 for the live seeding tracker. —- CitroenLover (talk) 22:39, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, you are correct! I forgot about the points he already acquired by making it to the SF. AmethystZhou (talk) 22:41, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thats no problem. — CitroenLover (talk) 22:44, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you
edit@AmethystZhou: I think that's the first time I've been thanked by someone for reverting their edit! That IP user was a bit of a nuisance. On the subject of IP users, I just noticed a number of messages in this talk page from: 92.251.145.53, 178.167.183.251, 178.167.142.201, 92.251.137.76, and 92.251.180.135. All five of these are from banned user User:DooksFoley147 and should be ignored or, better still, deleted. Alan (talk) 09:36, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
- You caught a very silly mistake by me! Totally forgot to check the edit history before making my edit. And yes, I know about DooksFoley147 and his distinct writing style gives him away every time... AmethystZhou (talk) 23:30, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
Ranking revisions
edit@AmethystZhou: I need your help please. In the Championship League winnings table each player has a ranking number in parethesis after his name, which is meant to be his ranking prior to the tournament start on 2 January 2024. I got thse numbers initially from the ranking list you have been working on. But now I'm not sure which column I should be looking at. Could you please have a quick look at my table and let me know if the numbers are correct or not. Thank you. Alan (talk) 21:57, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
- If you are looking for their rankings before Jan 2, that should be after revision point 10 (Dec 18), so the numbers in your table are correct! Also I just added the revision numbers to the tables in the rankings page, that should make the tables a bit easier to read. AmethystZhou (talk) 22:48, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you - and your table is much better with the revision numbers. Alan (talk) 06:41, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
- @AmethystZhou: An IP user has updated the ranking list table and seems to have screwed it up. I don't want to revert his edits since the numbers are probably right, but I haven't the time at the moment to try and figure out what he has done wrong. Could you have a look please. Alan (talk) 14:38, 19 April 2024 (UTC)
- It's all fixed now! AmethystZhou (talk) 00:30, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

GAN for Tour Championship 2024
editHi! You produced a really quality article for the 2024 Tour Championship. In case you didn't know, we have a Featured Topic on the Tour Championship. Because of that, I'd like to promote this article to GA to avoid the topic being removed. Is that something we might be able to do together? Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 19:54, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Screenshot archives not working
edit@AmethystZhou: It would seem that the screenshot archives that we made last year no longer work! Take a look at the ones in the 2023 Champion of Champions for example, where there are a lot of them. The Wayback Machine just says "Sorry. This URL has been excluded from the Wayback Machine." I have no idea how to deal with this. Alan (talk) 15:43, 4 June 2024 (UTC)
- @AmethystZhou: OK - I think I've figured out how to fix this. It's a big job and will take some time. For last year's ranking Championship League article there was only one screenshot archive, included for the tournament highest break of 145 made by Cao Yupeng in his match against Lyu Haotian. This match summary exists on the new system here but does not include any frame or break details. So for the 145 break I've used SnookerInfo as a reference. All of these non-working screenshot archives will need to be replaced with ones from the new system, using SnookerInfo wherever a high break is mentioned. Alan (talk) 06:58, 5 June 2024 (UTC)
- @AmethystZhou: These archives are now working again, so problem over. All 15 of them in the 2023 Champion of Champions seem to be OK. I'll check the rest later on. BTW you seem to have been inactive on Wikipedia for a while now. Is there a problem? Alan (talk) 14:02, 5 July 2024 (UTC)
