course page ported over

edit

Hi Amy! I've ported over course page to the new one at Education Program:CUNY, Brooklyn College/Theater History from 1642 (Spring 2013). Let me know if you have any trouble with it, or there's anything I can help with. Since there's no analog to the "getting help" tab, I added the library research resources you added into an appendix section after the grading rubric.

You can the contents of your course page now using the [edit] links near the "Objectives", "Deadlines & Tasks", and "Grading Rubric" sections. Good luck!--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 19:58, 24 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sage -- thank you so much! I really appreciate your help! One question for you: I originally created this page in my sandbox, but now I don't need it there (obviously). I'm afraid, though, that if I "delete" the page in my sandbox, I'll affect the actual course page. I've never used a template (or a sandbox!) before, so I guess I'm a bit confused about how all of this works together. Any tips for me? Many thanks!! Amy E Hughes (talk) 20:02, 24 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
When you moved your sandbox page, it took the whole history and moved it to the new title, and started a new history for your sandbox page, consisting of a redirect to the new title. See the contents of your sandbox page. You can now do whatever you want with your sandbox page, and it won't affect that course page.
Your new course page is also independent from the original one you set up at Wikipedia:Ambassadors/Courses/Theater History from 1642 (Amy E Hughes), since I simply copied the content you had added onto new pages associated with the "Education Program:" course page linked above.
You can recognize templates and "transcluded" pages by the pairs of curly brackets at the beginning and end. The way templates work (in their simplest form) is to take the contents of the page specified between the curly brackets, and copy that over to wherever the template is present on other pages. So, for example, if you write {{foo}} on a page, it will transclude (copy) the contents of Template:Foo, like this:

I hope that helps.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 20:19, 24 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Okay, yes, I think I get it! Thank you again! Amy E Hughes (talk) 20:22, 24 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

tracking students and articles

edit

Hi again! I just wanted point out some of the features of your course page. As soon as at least one student enrolls (using the Enroll tab at the top), your page will automatically get a table at the bottom listing all the students, and the students will be able to enter in the articles they are working on, and the articles of peers that they will be reviewing. So there's no need to manually keep a list of students on the page, and you could just use a simple bulleted list for the article suggestions you're compiling.

If you want to test out how it will work for students, you can enroll as a student yourself on your course page, or enroll in this example course.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 18:07, 25 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Sage -- okay, I understand. I do want to include a (rather long) list of articles I'd like the students to consider, so I will add that as a bulleted list (per your suggestion). Thanks! Amy E Hughes (talk) 19:57, 26 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Enroll Tokens

edit

enrollment tokens are required to enroll and add our names to the page. Are they provided by the online Ambassador?

The enrollment token was set by Amyehughes, who has probably sent it out to everyone in the class.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 18:45, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not yet. Has Prof. Hughes been informed of the need for the tokens? Bufoamer (talk) 19:01, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi -- I just sent an email to all students with the enrollment token. FYI, the token is listed in the instructions/handout for this project that I posted on Blackboard, but I can't put it on the Course Page on Wikipedia, since the token must be confidential. Prof. Hughes- I am here to 'talk' to you. But also let you know that I am overwhelmed with all of this! I don't understand how to 'enroll' and list my name under students. I've read all of the tutorial and watched the videos but I think I need someone to guide me along. Will we be going over this in class? Otherwise I might need to switch to the paper.... EmilyBlume (talk) 18:36, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi EmilyBlume. You'll find a tab called "Enroll" at the top right on the course page. Click that, and you'll be prompted for the enrollment token and then added to the table of students at the bottom.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 18:42, 6 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Emily! I just sent you an email with the enrollment token. And absolutely, you're going to get lots of help! In fact, as you may remember me mentioning in class last week, the last 45 minutes of our class tonight will be dedicated to answering your questions and looking at what we will be doing with this project in the weeks ahead. Bibliography Posted

edit

Hi there, Professor! I posted my bibliography in my sandbox. I had to get a little creative with sources for my chosen article of "choregos," but I think it will fit well with my plan to create a context for the term and given historical examples of specific people who fulfilled this role. Hope it worked alright! Kfurano1129 (talk) 02:51, 25 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Looks great, Kim! I also recommend taking a look at a book called "Nothing to Do with Dionysus" (I can't remember the editor's name; sorry). It's a collection of scholarly essays on ancient Greek theater, and there may be some useful material for you there. Happy reading! Amy E Hughes (talk) 14:12, 25 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
There are also sources listed at the bottom of this article: Greek Theatre. -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:25, 25 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Bibliography

edit

Hi Professor Hughes, I emailed you asking about the formatting of the bibliography, but I ended up converting it into APA using the tool. Worked out well! These sources are mainly from JSTOR and the International Bibliography for Theatre; I'm also going to try and use some books/library resources as I continue on and find gaps in my research. Thanks! Ashleybirdsell (talk) 22:06, 25 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

This sounds great, Ashley. Although for your thesis (as you know) you'll have to use MLA, on Wikipedia there isn't a standard style; instead, you should follow whatever style has already been established (in use) on the Wikipedia article you're editing, or you can use whatever style you like if citations are not already included in one style or another on a given Wikipedia article. Bibliography

edit

Hi, Prof. Hughes! I've just finished gathering my sources. I will be working on "Life is a Dream". I hope there's no problem with me using sources in Spanish, as this is a Spanish play. I used some sources from JSTOR, Ebsco, and a couple of books from the BC library. Also, if you could recommend me any additional material for this project, I'd be more than happy to check it out. Thanks! CataVillamarin111 (talk) 01:06, 28 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi. This is your Online Ambassador. If you use a source in a foreign language, just so indicate at the end of the cite as follows: (in Spanish). As for further sources, there are already quite a few listed in the references section of the article, so if you have not looked at those already, you should. Also, your sources may cite additional sources. Hope that helps! -- Ssilvers (talk) 15:27, 28 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Catalina -- and thanks, Ssilvers, for that tip! Amy E Hughes (talk) 14:49, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Bibliography

Hi Professor Hughes! I have posted my bibliography to my sandbox. My sources are mostly taken from Jstor and Academic Search complete. Let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions. Thank you! Gdirado (talk) 00:13, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi. This is your Online Ambassador. You need to format your citations more carefully. The names of journal articles should be in straight quotes, "like this", but the titles of longer works should be in italics, like this. See the wiki mark-up cheatsheet for help with these. Also, for web sources, you need to add the url, formatted like this: [url "Title"]. Finally, you need to proofread your citations to make sure there are spaces between words. Happy editing! -- Ssilvers (talk) 03:50, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
That's a great list, Gina! And yes, as our ambassador says, you just need to be more specific about the formatting. The wiki mark-up cheatsheet should help! Amy E Hughes (talk) 14:50, 30 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Character lists

edit

Hello, professor: The question has come up as to whether students should add character lists to articles. The Theatre Project's article structure guidelines suggest that characters should be described, to the extent that they are important, in the Plot (sometimes called Synopsis) section, and so a separate character list section may not be needed. I agree with this, as I think the complete cast list distracts readers from getting into the meat of the article, whereas the Plot section helps them to dive right in. I would encourage the students to find ways to combine the important aspects of character into the Plot section, and also, where relevant, in the sections that analyze the play. However, where there are a lot of characters, and the reader may get confused as to who is who, as in Hamlet, I agree that the cast list is helpful. I also think the cast list is more useful if we can list the original actors next to the character name. What do you think? Note that the project's article structure guidelines only represent a general consensus of those persons who considered the question at some point in time and are only advisory. -- Ssilvers (talk) 03:02, 24 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Ssilvers! This is a hard question...so you're saying that there's a consensus about character lists being appropriate in cases where there are a lot of characters? Any thoughts about the minimum number/etc.? As you know one of my students would really like to add a cast list to her Wikipedia article, but she is unclear as to what the "bar" is...thanks again for all of your help with this, and so many other things!! Amy E Hughes (talk) 02:54, 12 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I don't think you could call it a "consensus", but as a practical matter, I think that the plays with a lot of characters generally have one, so you could infer that people found it helpful. The Country Wife has about a dozen characters and no separate plot list section, although it does have a clever image that shows the original cast list. Compare The Relapse. See also Proserpine (play) (no cast list). I can't give you a number: If you read the plot summary, and there are too many characters to keep straight in your head, then that's the number. In any case, if a student, after thinking about it, feels that the character list is important, they should say so on the talk page and then add the section above the synopsis (not in the infobox). But, as I said above, if we do add a cast list, we could make it more useful by noting who the original players were (or, if the play had one or more very famous subsequent productions with lots of famous actors in the cast, then we could give a cast list for that production(s)). See, for example, Love in Several Masques, the cast table in Creatures of Impulse and, for an approach that deals with numerous major productions and notable casts, the casting table in The King and I. -- Ssilvers (talk) 03:16, 12 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Okay - excellent, I'll pass this along! Thanks! Amy E Hughes (talk) 04:00, 12 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Examples

edit

For excellent examples of theatre articles, students should see Hamlet, Colley Cibber, William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet, The Country Wife, The Author's Farce, Creatures of Impulse, Proserpine (play), and The Relapse. -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:49, 27 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

WP:LEAD

edit

Some of the students seem to be struggling with the guidlines for the introduction or Lead section. Our guideline on this is WP:LEAD, which gives a detailed description of what can/should go in the Lead section. It says, in part, "The lead serves as an introduction to the article and a summary of its most important aspects. ... The lead should be able to stand alone as a concise overview. It should define the topic, establish context, explain why the topic is notable, and summarize the most important points – including any prominent controversies. The notability of the article's subject is usually established in the first few sentences. The emphasis given to material in the lead should roughly reflect its importance to the topic [reflecting the focus of the sources cited in the article, and] significant information should not appear in the lead if it is not covered in the remainder of the article. The ... lead should not "tease" the reader by hinting at content that follows. Instead, the lead should be written in a clear, accessible style with a neutral point of view; it should ideally contain no more than four paragraphs...." (emphasis added). See, in particular, WP:LEAD#Introductory text. See also WP:LEADFOLLOWSBODY. A particularly good example is in Hamlet. -- Ssilvers (talk) 06:37, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

New course

edit

Thanks for the message, professor, and thanks to your students for their kind feedback! Unfortunately, I do not have time to serve as online ambassador this semester, but I wish you and your students the best! Some of the articles from last semester still need work on the referencing – for example, where books are cited, page numbers are often missing. It's wonderful that you are focusing on theatre articles. If anyone has specific questions about referencing or Wikipedia style or any questions about how to use the Wikipedia software, let your students know that they can contact me on my Talk page. I think it would help you, in supervising these Wikipedia projects, if you edited one of the articles yourself, so you could see what sort of issues come up and could get specific and deeper feedback on how Wikipedians bring an article up the ladder to B-class and then GA or even WP:Featured Article class. I would be happy to act as your reviewer and collaborator for that article. Happy editing! -- Ssilvers (talk) 18:01, 1 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks so much -- I will tell the students they need to take another look at their references (most of them reported that they are, indeed, still learning about proper citation). I know they will miss you and they will be happy to know they can ask you questions on your Talk page (thanks for that as well). And yes, I've been meaning to develop the article on nineteenth-century American actor Harry Watkins, and hope to make some progress on that this semester, if I can find the time. Very best wishes to you and I'm sure we'll be in touch again! 18:50, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

Education Program technical update, February 2014

edit

We've started working on "editor campaigns", a system that we expect will eventually be able to replace our current Education Program extension (and be useful for many other purposes as well). The early work with that project will focus on a system for signup up new editors for editing campaigns (such as courses, but also edit-a-thons, Wiki Loves Monuments, etc.). Because of that, progress will be slow on the current course page system. However, we have several improvements that should be available within the next few weeks.

Anyone can edit the main text of course pages

As part of the effort to make course pages behave more like regular wiki pages, we've enabled editing of course pages by anyone. Users who currently have the right to edit courses will have access to all the fields (so that they can change the start/end dates, and change the enrollment token). Users who currently cannot edit courses will be able to edit only the "page text" portion. This change should take effect on 2014-02-27.

Simplified course editing interface

We've considerably simplified the interface for editing course pages, removing the options to rename courses. Changing the title of a course would also move the course page, creating confusion and leading to a number of bugs. Several other parts of the course editing interface were not very useful, so we've removed them to make it easier on newcomers. This change should take effect on 2014-02-27.

Additional Notifications

Two students participating in the Facebook Open Academy mentorship program are currently working on additional Notifications for course pages. For the first of these, users will be notified whenever someone else adds them to a course.

Once again, if you have feedback about these new features, or other questions or ideas related to course pages, please let me know!--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 17:38, 21 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Education Program technical update, April 2014

edit

Since the last update, development of the editor campaigns project has been continuing, and it's almost at the point that it will be useful to users running edit-a-thons and other non-course outreach events. (If you are planning such an event soon and would like to beta test it for tracking the contributions of newcomers, get it touch.) In the meantime, we've made a few small improvements and bug fixes to the Education Program extension:

Default course end date

The default end date for courses is now approximately six months in the future, instead of immediately. This will prevent the common problem where a user creates a new course page but does change the default dates, resulting in a course that is immediately considered "ended" and thus cannot be enrolled in.

Notifications when you get added to a course

Whenever a user gets added to a course by someone else, they will now receive a Notification.

Disabling individual student profiles

The student profile special page (Special:Student/Username, not to be confused with Special:Students) is a page that lists the courses a student editor is enrolled in, and is also supposed to list the articles that user is working on. However, the list of articles can include incorrect data in cases where an instructor or volunteer assigned the articles to the student editor. Article edit notifications for students coming soon

A nearly complete patch from Facebook Open Academy student Jeff Lloyd will add a new type of Notification: students will be alerted to edits made by others to the article(s) they are assigned (as well as the corresponding talk pages). Expect to see this feature within the next several weeks.

Duplicate courses and API deletion

Bugs in the course page creation process (now fixed) led in some cases to duplicate listings for the same course at Special:Courses. This happens when the same course page had two (or more) different course ID numbers. It is possible to clean up such duplicate entries using by making calls to the API. I've documented this process and written a Python script for it.

If you have feedback about these changes, or other questions or ideas related to course pages, please let Anna Koval or me know!--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 19:23, 22 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

This is Jessie B. from your Theatre History to 1642 course. After learning some basic tips from the training modules, I made a few small edits to the East Carolina University page, focusing primarily on creating a consistency in comma usage when making lists. I look forward to class on Monday!

The Witch of Edmonton

edit

Hello, Amy! I claimed a couple of articles from the list. For the third, I'd like to consider The Witch of Edmonton. The article as it stands is C class largely because the content is not succinct enough. I think I remember you suggesting Stub or Start class as the best places to begin. Should I stay away from C class for our assignment? Thanks! Mcraab123 (talk) 17:21, 18 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Mcraab123! I think you can definitely consider it, but yes, in general it's harder to get a C-class article to B-class status than it is to get something that Stub/Start-class to a higher class. I suggest going through the evaluation process for The Witch of Edmonton (as well as the other articles you're considering) as a way to imagine more concretely what you could enhance, augment, improve, etc. The Wikipedia Article Evaluation Form is on Blackboard in the Syllabus/Handouts area. Although you will only submit to me the completed Eval Form for the article you ultimately decide to work on, the form is also designed to help you make the decision, based on what has already been done to the article and what (according to Wiki standards and your own professional opinion) still needs to be done. Let me know if this makes sense? Happy writing... Amy E Hughes (talk) 15:04, 22 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

finding sources

edit

After reading OrangeZappo's comment about not being able to find sources, I listed a few resources (where to find articles) on his talk page. I figure I should list them here as well to forestall students thinking that their topic is not covered in published literature. These electronic database are all available by way of the New York Public Library's "Articles and Databases" (usually only within an NYPL library branch).

  • Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive (has lots of important periodicals, though OCR is not perfect; ends in the year 2000)
  • International Index for the Performing Arts Full Text
  • International Bibliography of Theatre and Dance with Full Text

Hope this helps! -- kosboot (talk) 17:13, 2 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes! Thanks a million, Kosboot! I told them about IBTD (which the Brooklyn College library subscribes to) but I will also let them know about these other two resources at NYPL. Overall, things are going pretty well with their research, although if you have any feedback on their preliminary bibliographies (in their Sandboxes), I know the students would be very grateful for your professional guidance! Thanks again. Amy E Hughes (talk) 16:29, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello Amyehughes, Thank you for your feedback, and thank you for the link. It definitely clarified some things for me. I did use the Wiki referencing tool. "Bibliography" section in an article?

edit

Hello Amyehughes, Thank you for the feedback on bibliography! Yes, the names of the electronic databases had to be italicized, and I fixed them. On another note, there is a the Noh article I'm trying to work on has "Bibliography" section that's not Reference section. Is this a section usually called "Further Reading"? Decafespresso (talk) 20:47, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I think that is usually called "Further Reading," and if you think the section heading should be changed to reflect Wikipedia's standard conventions, you should do that! Amy E Hughes (talk) 16:01, 6 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Kosboot confirmed that there's nothing wrong with citing foreign language sources, by the way. Decafespresso (talk) 22:56, 3 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

This is great news!! Thanks for checking, Decafespresso! Amy E Hughes (talk) 16:01, 6 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Okay. I was able to change the formatting so that each citation stood alone. Also, I took out some texts and added others. Now that my plan is taking shape, it's easier to see what references will be useful to me and which ones would just be repetitious. See you in class! Deliirving (talk) 21:13, 5 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! That makes more sense! I guess I'm still getting the hang of Wikipedia...Deliirving (talk) 16:37, 14 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

If you use a foreign source, then at the end of the ref, before the ending ref tag you should add, for example: (French language) or (in German). -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:53, 22 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Harry Watkins (actor)

Hi, Amy. I added a photo to this article (please take a look), but I don't know much about the photo, and I bet you do. Can you tell me when/where it was first published, who the photographer was, when it was taken, and anything else you know about it? Thanks for any help! -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:58, 18 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Great to hear from you, Ssilvers!! There's no date. On the back is "C. D. Fredericks & Co." -- the photo is at least late 1850s because (also on the back) Fredericks's studios in Havana and Paris are listed in addition to the NYC location (which is probably where this photo was made). I think ca. 1860s is likely the best guess. Hope this helps! Amy E Hughes (talk) 14:13, 22 October 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Where did you get the photo? BTW, I am hoping that you will beef up Watkins' bio article a bit more, describing more of his major roles, most popular plays and naming which theatres he managed (and when), and, if possible, giving a little more about his personal life. It's still pretty bare bones. All the best! -- Ssilvers (talk) 16:30, 22 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations, Keith! I look forward to looking at it more closely. I hope you can also "de-orphanize" the article by linking to it from other relevant articles -- perhaps by adding a bit of text to the articles that yours links to, i.e. the writers, texts, or theatrical traditions mentioned in your article? As for the TOC, I just looked at it and it appears to already be located under the lead...? Did this get fixed since you left me this message? Again, congrats. Amy (Eric Ort here). An original author of the Provincetown Players article had a citation for an article in cambridgescholars.com. The citation had an old (and unusable) link to the article. Hi EDOrt -- yes, I see it there -- possibly what you need to do is eliminate the http (URL) when you add the image. If you look at the code for the other two images in the gallery, you'll see what I mean. Since you are linking internally in Wikipedia you don't need the http/external link; instead you would just list the file in double square brackets, e.g., File:Sg12th.jpg. Or at least I think so...! Good luck. Amy E Hughes (talk) 11:37, 19 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Amy - just wanted to check in and let you know that I was surprised to see that someone has chosen - out of the blue - to do some editing to the Provincetown Players article. It sat dormant for years and just now there is some activity. . . Anyway, I sent a talk message to that individual giving him a heads up that I would be doing a fair amount of writing and that I would then be nominating it for peer review and that I hoped he would provide feedback. Just thought I would fill you in on that. Otherwise, all is going well. EDOrt (talk) 22:50, 31 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Sohphie Treadwell image

edit

Hi Amy, I'm not sure why my image was removed as I obtained it from the Wikimedia commons. I wanted to put an image of a typewriter, specific to the era my subject was a journalist in, in the journalism section of my article, but perhaps this isn't relevant enough? The rights to her work and images printed in them are owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson. I have their address and am going to write them to ask for permission to use images on the wikipedia page, but this may take a good length of time to receive approval. I am also going to inquire with the Public and other theatres which have produced her works, for permission and access to post playbill or production images. Hopefully at least one of my inquiries will pan out. 69.122.39.176 (talk) 17:16, 21 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it sounds complicated! I think these are great ideas, but in the end I don't want it to take so much time that you sacrifice writing/research for the article! Another tactic might be to add an image already in the Commons that's related to Treadwell (e.g., picture of a theatre where a particular play premiered?). You can do that at any point and it will be a good contribution. Thanks for keeping me posted! Amy E Hughes (talk) 16:22, 22 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Wiki Loves Pride 2016

edit

As a past contributor, you are invited to participate in the third annual Wiki Loves Pride campaign, which runs through the month of June. The purpose of the campaign is to create and improve content related to LGBT culture and history. How can you help?

  1. Create or improve LGBT-related Wikipedia pages and showcase the results of your work here
  2. Document local LGBT culture and history by taking pictures at pride events and uploading your images to Wikimedia Commons
  3. Contribute to an LGBT-related task force at another Wikimedia project (Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, Wikivoyage, etc.)

Looking for topics? The Tasks page, which you are welcome to update, offers some ideas and wanted articles.

This campaign is supported by the Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group, an officially recognized affiliate of the Wikimedia Foundation. The group's mission is to develop LGBT-related content across all Wikimedia projects, in all languages. Visit the affiliate's page at Meta-Wiki for more information, or follow Wikimedia LGBT+ on Facebook. Remember, Wiki Loves Pride is about creating and improving LGBT-related content at Wikimedia projects, and content should have a neutral point of view. One does not need to identify as LGBT or any other gender or sexual minority to participate. This campaign is about adding accurate, reliable information to Wikipedia, plain and simple, and all are welcome! If you have any questions, please leave a message on the campaign's talk page.

Thanks, and happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:08, 30 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

on editing everyman

edit

I ride herd on the everyman trope closely, because it's commonly subjected to drive-by edits where people insert examples without citations. Of course it goes without saying that college students should know about citing their work ;) but if they don't there's a good chance in this case that they'll be reverted quickly. I wanted to warn you in case there are complaints. Mangoe (talk) 19:36, 26 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Citations for upcoming project

edit

Hello. I came across notices for your upcoming course assignment on a number of theatre/drama pages. Wikipedia's coverage of the subject isn't great, so it's very encouraging to see there'll be some improvements. I noticed that you had a note for the Week 4 assignment:

For your actual Wikipedia article, you will use Wikipedia's referencing tool to automatically format your citations in APA style. However, you will write your MA/MFA thesis using MLA style, which is why I want you to use MLA in for this Sandbox assignment.

so I thought I'd drop you a line about that. Wikipedia doesn't prefer any particular citation style overall, instead leaving it to editors on an article-by-article basis. Many of the drama ones do actually use MLA, in the particular form of MLA author-date system (I just upated Konstantin Stanislavski, for example, which uses multiple sources frequently, in which case MLA author-date makes for a cleaner and clearer read). I wanted to encourage you to get students to be consistent in citation style for whichever particular article on which they might work. Sometimes there's a section on the talk page that offers a list of conventions for that particular article, including citation style; other times, it's apparent from those already in place. Many thanks and hope the project goes well.  • DP •  {huh?} 10:42, 27 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank so much for your note, DionysosProteus! I'll edit the assignment to make it clear the students should follow the style conventions on a page. They find it easiest to use the citation tool, but would that potentially cause problems? Amy E Hughes (talk) 15:54, 27 August 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Amy. I posted my bibliography, and am possibly successful at changing the easy input provided by wiki into MLA style. I'll share with the class if it worked. RaineRules (talk) 00:07, 26 September 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello Amy! I posted my bibliography but wanted to let you know that JSTOR and ISBD would not connect through the CUNY Library cite. I plan on finding more sources once I figure out the glitch. See you soon. Emily Giant 17:35, 26 September 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Giantek (talkcontribs)

Add to course

edit

Hi Amy! I tried to add myself to our course but it says I need a passcode from the instructor. I figured I would ask you this way, to try out using a talk page. Thanks! Ee1013 (talk) 16:23, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Ee1013! The passcode is on the handout that I gave in class (you can also view the electronic copy on Blackboard).Amy E Hughes (talk) 20:28, 3 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Your user page

edit

Just a thought, Amy - it may not be a good idea to link to your books from your user page as this could be interpreted as advertising. Deb (talk) 12:53, 19 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Deb - I didn't realize it would be read that way. I have removed the link. Amy E Hughes (talk) 22:27, 26 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

I've also published my preliminary Bibliography to my sandbox - I’ve landed on Black American Theatre right after the Great Depression, and specifically looking at the "Federal Theatre Project", "The Negro Actors Guild of America", and the "American Negro Theater".
