Your edits to Park Hotel

edit

In this series of edits you tried to convert a disambiguation page to an article about one of the many hotels named "Park Hotel" or "The Park Hotel". Such a disambiguation page is intended to list all the articles on Wikipedia which might be referred to by the same name. Please do not change such a page into an article about only one of the topics without consulting with other editors. Also, it seems that your edits included text published on gb.placedigger.com/the-park-hotel-experience1287644979.html, and apparently a violation of the copyright held by that site. The edits have been [[WP:REVERT|reverted because the page is more appropriate as a disambiguation page. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 23:26, 10 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Conflict of interest editing

edit

  Hello, Anthony Straeger. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the article Draft:The Park Hotel, Morecambe, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:00, 11 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi Anthony Straeger. After seeing your posts at the Wikipedia Teahouse, I have decided to add the following template to your user talk page. I am doing this not because you have done anything wrong so to speak, but because the template contains links to relevant Wikipedia pages which I believe you might find helpful. You should understand that if you have any connection to the hotel you are writing about that goes beyond a mere casual one, you likely have a conflict of interest (COI) with respect to anything written about the hotel on Wikipedia. Wikipedia doesn't specifically prohibit COI editing, but it does highly discourage it because it quickly can lead to more serious issues when its not done according to relevant policies and guidelines. As for writing an article about this hotel, you're going to need to establish that the hotel meets the criteria of Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) before any such draft is accepted. This can be harder to do than it seems because Wikipedia defines notability in a particular way and anything deemed promotional and lacking the significant coverage in multiple independent reliable sources is not going to be accepted. Moreover, Wikipedia articles are intended to written in the own words of editors based upon information found in such sources, so simply copying and pasting content from other websites onto Wikipedia (even if there are not copyright issues involved) is also unlikely going to be accepted mainly because the style of writing typically used on third-party websites is not considered the encyclopedic and neutral style that Wikipedia requires. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:14, 11 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for that concise and informative message. I understand the principles of COI, but I was brought in to sort out a series of deeds and documents to create and work out the chronology of the building, which has historic value being one of the oldest buildings in the town and area. The object for the company was to write an accurate history. So from a personal point of view there is no COI. I have contacted the company that took the material and have issued a take down, I will wait to see what happens there and then suggest that the owners insist that the copyright of the document is registered to me. Until this is resolved I will leave it and then suggest that if they want to create a page they should get someone who is independent. Thanks again to all who have helped me with this. I appreciate it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.207.255.66 (talk) 08:59, 11 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
If you were "brought in" to sort out things by anyone associated with the hotel, then for Wikipedia purposes you are considered to have a conflict of interest. So, you should comply with the guidelines I linked above. If you are being compensated in anyway for your efforts, you are also more than likely considered to be subject to WP:PAID. Please understand that even an apparent COI is potentially problematic, so you should try and be as up front as possible about whatever relationship you have with the hotel or anyone acting on its behalf. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:46, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Can I restart?

The company has taken down my article. Can I restart with my copy?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Anthony Straeger (talkcontribs) 20:33, 11 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

I moved your question to the bottom of the page since it was not clear who is was addressed to. I'll ping DES so that he can comment if he wants. Basically you can continue working on the draft Draft:The Park Hotel, Morecambe, but I strongly suggest that you submit for review via Wikipedia:Articles for creation when you think it's ready for article status. You're not required to do this per se, but AfC reviewers tend to be quite experienced editors who can provide suggestions on ways to improve the article to help bring it up to Wikipedia standards. They should also be able to point any issues with the content which might be due to COI. Your draft may be declined once, twice or maybe even more times, but if that happens the reviewers should provide guidance on issues which need addressing. If you follow their suggestions, the draft should slowly move closer to be being approved.
Just for reference, the primary reason drafts are declined has to do with Wikipedia:Notability or the lack thereof, so you should focus on clearly showing how the hotel meets either WP:GNG or WP:ORG. In many cases, a simple well sourced article which clearly shows the subject to be Wikipedia notable is better than an excessively detailed unsourced wall of text. You posted above ii #Conflict of interest editing that The object for the company was to write an accurate history, which is fine for the company; Wikipedia, however, is more interested in a "verifiable through citations to reliable sources" history of the company. So, if you keep that in mind you should be fine. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:03, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hello again. I agree with everything that Marchjuly wrote above. I will add that at the moment the draft Draft:The Park Hotel, Morecambe does not cite any sources at all. If you wish to proceed I would advise you to start by adding independent published reliable sources that support the information that you have already in the draft, or as much of it as possible, Please read Referencing for Beginners for information on how to format such citations. I personally advise the footnote method, using citation templates.
I would also mention that the draft should have a short (1-3 paragraphs) introductory section (known as a "lead section"). This should briefly describe what the hotel is, and indicate why it is significant. Key facts such as the date it was built and who built it can be mentioned here. The lead section generally summarizes the article as a whole, and thus may include facts stated at greater length in the body of the article. The lead section has no section header, while all other sections do.
Feel free to ask for further help, either on my talk page or at the Teahouse, if you are unsure how to proceed. Do make the COI disclosure, and the WP:PAID disclosure if you are being paid in any way.. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 22:01, 12 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thank you both for your help and kindness in putting this together. The information that I put together is valid and there are many sorces to add, so I will collect them and reduce the history as at present it is probably too detailed - as someone who loves history I had a blast looking through all these old deeds and purchase orders and looking into the history of the building. That was my prime reason for putting it up, it is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the town. So has some warrant I think. Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.170.9.84 (talk) 08:42, 13 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:The Park Hotel, Morecambe

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:The Park Hotel, Morecambe requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from http://www.places2goinnewcastle.com/places/25614436-The-Park-Hotel-Experience/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
