Speedy deletion nomination of Draft:Michael Rhoades

edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Draft:Michael Rhoades requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be an unambiguous copyright infringement. This page appears to be a direct copy from https://www.bsu.edu/calendar/events/academics/planetarium/2023/03/30/7-antitheses?date=2023-03-30. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hello AugmentedIntelligence -- I've deleted the copyright violation from the draft article so that you can start again with it. Never cut and paste material into Wikipedia, we cannot accept copyrighted text. You need to rewrite the material in your own words, citing the source as a reference. If you need help with editing or referencing, the Teahouse is a friendly forum for new editors. Regards, Espresso Addict (talk) 16:04, 18 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you... will try again. AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 17:28, 18 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@AugmentedIntelligence I have moved your draft to Draft:Michael_Rhoades. That is the proper location for drafts (note the Draft prefix). You had it on your User Page at User:AugmentedIntelligence which is the incorrect location for drafts (note the User prefix). qcne (talk) 11:52, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 11:53, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Can I just check, are you Michael Rhoades? qcne (talk) 11:55, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I am... and quite a newbie...
Can you tell me where the Draft page is located? AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 11:56, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for confirming. Wikipedia is really complicated and can be pretty frustrating for new editors.
The full URL for the draft is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Michael_Rhoades..
I would highly recommend reading our guidance to writing autobiographies.
It's important to understand that Wikipedia has content guidelines and we only host topics about notable subjects. We use a special definition of "notability", an explanation of which can be found here for people.
The test of notability is usually determined if the topic has had significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. I am unfortunately not seeing that in the four sources on your draft. I am therefore declining the draft, but if you would like to present me three good sources that meet these criteria, let me know and I will be able to give some more guidance on if you meet our notability criteria or not.
Again, any questions just let me know. qcne (talk) 12:02, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for the offer of assistance and for the clarification as to where the Draft page is... This process is indeed quite challenging! Your assistance is greatly appreciated. I will ready the section on writing autobiographies when finished writing to you.
I have run into copyright issues when trying to cite sources to represent notability. If you look at my online CV, near the bottom in the "Recent Presentations" you can see that I have many presentations of my work at prestigious events and the same with lectures... etc. http://www.perceptionfactory.com/cv/
Also, in order to earn my PhD I had to create new knowledge, which seems noteworthy. The challenge is how to represent these with citations. There are few, if any, press releases for such things.
I realize that I may think my work noteworthy , when in reality it is not. So I am open to that if it is true... please let me know what you think.
Thanks again! AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 12:38, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's perhaps unfortunate that we've used the term "notability" in our policy, as it has connotations of "famous" or "prestigious". A better way to think about it is "noted in secondary sources". It's not necessarily what you've done but how that has been noted.
If I were reviewing a biographic article of someone in the creative arts like yourself, I would be looking for one of the following:
- they are widely citated by peers for their works or style;
- they have won significant critical attention for their works or style;
- they played a major role in creating a significant piece of work.
If one of those above things don't exist, then I would default to looking at the sources in the draft. I would be checking if at least three of the sources meet all those criteria below:
- discuss the person in a significant way: interpretation, analysis, debate, commentary, discussions. Not just a passing mention such as just being included on a list of exhibitors.
- be discussed in reliable places: newspapers, journals, books, periodicals. Social media and random blogs wouldn't count.
- be independent of the person: so not a piece based purely on an interview or from their own website. Interviews with analysis and discussion is okay, but if, for example, a profile in an arts magazine just consists entirely of the person talking about themselves then it wouldn't count.
If there are three sources that meet those, then I would usually say the test of notability has been proven and accept the draft.
Do you think you have three sources that meet those criteria? Sources can be offline, as long as they are published. qcne (talk) 12:53, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the clarifications. I have had several newspaper articles about my work in the past but when I look at the links to them they are no longer online.
It appears, that the long and the short of it is that I cannot meet this required criteria...
Thank you so much for your assistance here... and be well. AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 13:20, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Just a note, the newspaper article sources don't need to be accessible online, as long as the full citation is available to allow readers to go look it up in an archive or library. qcne (talk) 13:24, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hmmmm... Interesting... I have 5 of those. How would they need to be presented within my page?
It seems strange to publish broken links. AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 13:30, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
It would just end up being a plain text reference, so perhaps something like (fictional text):
Anderson, Jack (1996-10-16). "Local artist presented with award". p. 14. Danville Sentinel, Danville
Maybe difficult for a reader to verify if they don't have the copy of that newspaper, but offline sources are still permitted. Alternatively it might be available on one of the online newspaper archives? qcne (talk) 13:41, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see... Unfortunately, I do not have any information about the article except the (broken) link to it on my web page. One example looks like this:
W-Shop Wunderkamp January 2015 at the Wunderkammer Company – Michael Exhibited paintings of various sizes both for viewing and for sale. Here are two newspaper articles and interviews about the event:
Journal Gazette (With link on the name)
News Sentinel. (With link on the name) AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 13:44, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Perhaps they've been archived at https://archive.org/?
The alternative would be to check newspaper archives at your local library and such. qcne (talk) 13:48, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, I did not seem to be able to locate any of them. I actually found another one on my site... there are 6... but all broken links.
Thank you so much for your time. Your insights have been greatly appreciated. AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 13:56, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
No worries. Drafts are deleted after six months of inactivity, so do feel free to come back and edit if you do manage to find those newspaper sources. qcne (talk) 13:57, 19 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello,
So, I found three newspaper articles that will hopefully satisfy the notability requirements without any copyright infringement. Another editor challenged the image I had put on the site since I had used it on the IDIA Lab site before attempting to put it on Wikipedia... Again potential copyright issues.
Are we getting closer here?
Thank you for you time. AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 10:11, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi again @AugmentedIntelligence.
Potentially, if those three newspaper articles all meet the criteria we need.
I notice you have been trying to edit your user page again. Your draft is located at draft is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Michael_Rhoades. You will be able to edit that page. Please don't create any more drafts or edit your user page as if it were a draft. qcne (talk) 11:41, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I understand. When I wanted to edit the draft you and I worked on yesterday, it had been deleted. Unless I am missing something (very likely) I had to re-create it in order to edit it further.
At least, I finally understand the difference between my user page and the Michael Rhoades page. It is quite confusing.
Thanks again for your help! AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 12:26, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi again @AugmentedIntelligence. I notice that you've moved the draft to Michael_Rhoades, bypassing the AfC process. That's totally okay, and within your powder to do, but I'd caution you that the article might be re-draftified by the New Page Patrollers (experienced editors who "review" all new articles).
Ideally you will want to place those three newspaper articles as in-line citations within the text, supporting whatever part of the text they are referencing. qcne (talk) 18:54, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I had not received any negative comments from the editors for several hours so considered that meant that I should try and make it live. Again, not sure of how the process works and am completely unaware of the best practices so just trying things.
Should I move it back to the draft space and wait for another level of reviewers to ok it? Would they then move it to being a live article or would they just notify me?
I completely appreciate your help with this. Learning a lot!! AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 19:03, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ah, well- reviewers are all volunteers and sometimes articles can go months without any comments or reviews. We have hundreds of new articles per day so that's just the nature of it.
I think let's see what happens with it now published on the encyclopaedia. A New Page Patroller might bump it back to draft but that's okay, it happens.
If you can fix those three newspaper references, there's a better chance of it staying. qcne (talk) 19:05, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
OK... I will do that...
Thanks!! AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 19:06, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

@HitroMilanese Courtesy ping, see the conversation above. Looks like the three new sources are:
Wunderkammer Art Exhibit
Lotus Gallery Exhibit
Three Rivers Festival Installation qcne (talk) 11:43, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Qcne
Hello Qcne,
I was unable to access the sources cuz they are behind the paywall. However, I reviewed Michael Rhoades' website, specifically under the "Presentation" tab, where all the listed galleries and exhibitions are mentioned. Based on this, I believe he did exhibit at these events. That said, I could not locate any reviews of his artwork during my Google search. Unless these three references include reviews from reliable sources, he does not meet the inclusion criteria for artists.
Since the draft has now been moved to the main space by @AugmentedIntelligence, the responsibility to demonstrate verifiability rests with them. I guess this should be moved back to draftspace for improvement else it will certainly be AfDed.
@Qcne I’m deviating slightly from the main topic, but have you checked main public logs of this article on main space, it has been deleted earlier twice but discussion does not mention the subject at all. Regards. Hitro talk 21:50, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I just realized that the AfDs were about a different Michael Rhoades who was a martial artist. Please disregard the third paragraph of my last comment. Hitro talk 21:56, 20 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

I think I see what is happening here... Sounds like I need to abandon this project.
Thank you. AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 15:16, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I do not believe you do unless you cannot prove that Rhoades passes our notability criteria. It has been returned to draft for you to do that in peace, assuming it to be possible. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 15:19, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Does not look like it is possible to prove. There was one article I know of that was written about Rhoades by a prominent figure in his field but that link is not longer available and the person is deceased. AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 15:22, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi again @AugmentedIntelligence, just saw the latest updates on this draft as I had this page on my watchlist.
I guess one question is if those three newspaper articles (all behind the journal gazette archive wall) provide that significant independent coverage we're looking for? I can't personally access so cannot verify. qcne (talk) 15:22, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi... Thanks for checking in. At least one of the articles is about Rhoades and his exhibit. I have to pay again to get the other two. I did not realize the links would only work for one day and then only for me. I should have downloaded the pdfs... but as I recall they do the same.
Is there a way I can post the Pdfs and then link to them without running into copyright issues? AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 15:28, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
You may use it as a reference without paying for it (again) if it is WP:RS 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 15:40, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
And please do not upload the pdfs. That will be a copyright breach 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 15:41, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I thought it might be. So how do I prove that the articles are "about" Rhoades work? If they are sufficient does the article then meet the notability criteria? AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 15:45, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
If yu know they are aboutRhoades, then you have no need to prove it. That is left to others. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 15:46, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
So we should be good on that issue... What is remaining?
I have removed the images for now. AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 15:48, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
I just downloaded pdfs of the three articles. Each seems to be speaking about Rhoades' work. AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 15:42, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
And, I think they are reliable sources being the Fort Wayne Indiana Newspapers. AugmentedIntelligence (talk) 15:46, 26 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
This is useful knowledge. Now please add the references (as citations) to the draft. They may be sufficient to save a decline, and might be sufficient to gain acceptance.
