Over the last six months, this page has undergone considerable revisions, as part of the BNCBC bicentenary history project.

These revisions have included removal of various factual errors; addition of substantial detail on the early boat club; completion of a definitive list of Henley winning crews; improvements to the readbility of the text; and numerous references.

In light of the above, might I suggest that the box requesting improvements to the page (which was put there in December 2010) is no longer warranted?

Your username

edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "BNCBCHistory", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because it's promotional, and it asserts authority. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username, or you may simply create a new account for editing. Thank you.

I have some sympathy - see my user page for my academic history - but you really ought to abide by the rules here Philip Trueman (talk) 09:13, 4 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

Please see my note on the Philip Trueman user talk page. I am the official historian of the Brasenose College Boat Club, and am curently writing the history of BNCBC for the 1815-2015 bicentenary. The edits to the Wikipedia page are based on short extracts from the manuscript currently in preparation.
Somehow I seem to have put my first message to you on your user page not here on your talk page. That was a mistake, and I apologise. I've moved both message and reply here - your user page is for you to say something about yourself and your aims on Wikipedia.
There are several difficulties here. Your username is an issue because it indicates that you are posting to Wikipedia in an official capacity, not as an individual. That is against Wikipedia policy - see WP:ISU. Look at it this way: if you handed your duties to a successor, would you expect him or her to continue posting to Wikipedia using the same account? You would? That's not allowed here.
Secondly, you seem to have misunderstood the purpose of Wikipedia. It isn't a repository for historical accounts, no matter how well researched. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. It's a tertiary source. Articles should cite published secondary sources. (If only primary sources exist, that would be taken as an indication that the subject isn't sufficiently notable.)
Thirdly, you have a clear conflict of interest here - see WP:COI. That isn't allowed, and I hope it is obvious why it shouldn't be. It would harm Wikipedia's reputation for reliability.
As I've said, I have some sympathy with your aims. As you are doubtless aware, the rowing histories of our two colleges go back a long way. But there are rules here. If you do get your account written up and published then it would be fine for someone else to cite it as a reference in the Wikipedia article. If you wish to continue editing Wikipedia articles, and I hope you do, then I suggest you apply for a change of username, and familiarise yourself with policies such as WP:COI, WP:OWN, WP:V, WP:CITE and so on.   Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "BNCBCHistory", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because it appears to represent a role, rather than an individual, see WP:ROLE. Hello David,

It does not represent a role. I was at Brasenose College (BNC) and I write rowing history. It is as simple as that. I am one of a number of writers who write on a range of topics for Hear The Boat Sing, which is a well known rowing blog run out of the US. I am probably the foremost historian of 17th and 18th cetnury rowing, which has nothing to do with Brasenose College.

Welcome to Wikipedia. Because we have a policy against usernames which give the impression that the account represents a group, organization or website, I have blocked this account; please take a moment to create a new account with a username that represents only yourself as an individual and which complies with our username policy or request a change of username. It also appears that your account is intended to be used for the purpose of telling the world about an organization, person or cause that you consider worthwhile. Unfortunately, many good causes are not sufficiently notable for their own Wikipedia article, and all users are discouraged from editing in any area where they have an inherent conflict of interest. You may wish to consider one of these alternative outlets.
While user names that are the names of organizations are not permitted, you are permitted to use a username that contains the name of a company or organization if it identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Foundation", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87". Additionally, if your contributions to Wikipedia form all or part of work for which you are, or expect to be, paid, you must disclose who is paying you to edit.

Please also note that you are permitted to use a username that contains the name of a company or organization if it identifies you individually, such as "Sara Smith at XYZ Company", "Mark at WidgetsUSA", or "FoobarFan87".

If your username does not represent a group, organization or website, you may appeal this username block by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page.

You may simply create a new account, but you may prefer to change your username to one that complies with our username policy, so that your past contributions are associated with your new username. If you would prefer to change your username, you may appeal this username block by adding the text

{{unblock-un|new username|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}

at the bottom of your talk page. Please note that you may only request a name that is not already in use, so please check here for a listing of already taken names.

Request reason:

This was dealt with in 2015!!!!!! Really!

Decline reason:

I'm not sure I agree that it was dealt with, more like it was unaddressed. If you are(or were) "official historian of the Brasenose College Boat Club", this could be seen as a role account. I too think you should change your name. As such, I endorse Orangemike's action, and decline your request. 331dot (talk) 21:52, 26 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

It seems people cannot distinguish between BNCBC Historian and BNCBCHistory. I am not claiming a role as I am not saying I am the BNCBC Historian, I am merely stating I was in the BNC Boat Club and I like history.

Decline reason:

This is not truthful; "I am the official historian of the Brasenose College Boat Club," Yamla (talk) 10:37, 28 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
