Yeah, I did see from the early reports that it was going to be a "buyout", but then when the Knicks stated that he had been "waived", I put that instead as that's what the official report said. Change it if you feel inclined to, don't mind either way actually. They are technically the same thing. DaHuzyBru (talk) 09:24, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
DYK for Conner Mertens

Page protection request
Hi Bagumba. Could you page protect 2010–11 Georgia Bulldogs basketball team so that IPs are no longer allowed to edit it? A long while back I removed a section called "Quality of officials" because it's clearly WP:UNDUE weight on a very biased facet of that season. At the time I removed it, I had no idea that another editor had already tried removing it several times, but some stupid anon with an agenda keeps re-inserting it. The section violates UNDUE, NPOV, and certainly doesn't belong in the article. It's tiresome to keep seeing notifications that my legitimate removal has been reverted by a disgruntled Georgia fan or player. Thanks. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:39, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
- Since there is only 1 IP involved currently, common practice is to not protect against all IPs. My suggestion would be to start a discussion on the article talk page about your concerns, and notify the IP of the discussion. You may also want to drop them a warning on edit warring.—Bagumba (talk) 16:14, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
DYK for Dave Butler (basketball, born 1964/1965)
On 12 March 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Dave Butler (basketball, born 1964/1965), which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Rhodes Scholar candidate Dave Butler played college basketball and was named to the Pacific-12 Conference Hall of Honor? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Dave Butler (basketball, born 1964/1965). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

Categories
Hi Bagumba,
Do you think that "child" categories like 17th-century Italian mathematicians would be better to place than a parent categories such as Italian mathematicians? This is assuming that an article has neither the "child" nor the parent category in the first place. Robert4565 (talk) 03:12, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
- Generally, its better to use the most specific cat that is applicable. If your question is if the 17th century cat should be created (not sure), Im not a cat expert, and there all sorts of rules on how detailed they can be.—Bagumba (talk) 03:31, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
Protect page request
Hey! Can I request to protect Global F.C. due to vandalism from IP editors? You can see its history here. Plus, when they add information they are not adding reliable sources. I am planning that the article may hopefully achieve GA status. Cheers! FairyTailRocks (talk) 23:02, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
- You may use WP:SEMI or WP:WHITELOCK for this. :) FairyTailRocks (talk) 23:08, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
- It doesn't seem to be persistent enough to warrant protection at this time. I would suggest to start a discussion on the article talk page, and it appears to be a content dispute as well.—Bagumba (talk) 23:53, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
- Sure! I left already a notice on the article's talk page FairyTailRocks (talk) 01:15, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
- Mate, I am about to lose my temper (well not really). Anyway, I already added a message, but it seems the IP editor still doesn't care about it. I tried to inform him by edit summary which you can see here. FairyTailRocks (talk) 07:53, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
- I've left an initial set of warnings at the user's talk page, as well as invited the to the article talk page.. Consider using the templates at Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace if there are continued problems. You should also be familiar with Wikipedia:Dispute resolution, if you weren't already. Since this is only a single user, protection would not be appropriate.—Bagumba (talk) 08:15, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Hey Bagumba! I need your help again, I noticed that you blocked IP User 83.45.160.173 from editing the article, but then another IP editor 81.32.205.150 keeps adding back the information I removed without any notice nor reply from me again.. [1] I am not sure if this will going to end or solve this edit warring, since I left a notice in the article's talk page and posted a message on his/her talk page. Can a protection request be appropriate? Btw, I will nominate the article for GA promotion.FairyTailRocks (talk) 12:14, 15 March 2014 (UTC)
- Protected for a week, and warned the new IP about warring. While its likely the same user, you should notify IPs of discussions on their talk page. They probably don't have watchlists to see edit summaries, and might not know to look in edit history. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 19:35, 15 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi, several people from the baseball wikiproject are getting together after Wizardman's sudden retirement to figure out a better way to organize the Wikiproject. One of the ideas we came up with is having our own IRC channel to help each other, as well as new users with collaboration and content. If you need help connecting to IRC join #wikipedia-coffeehouse connect. The IRC channel for Wikiproject Baseball is #wiki-baseball connect. Thanks Secret account 22:52, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

Nikola Peković
What are you thinking you are here, a big brother? I am highly aware I was involved by him in edit war. Because of that I wrote him on his talk page to stop with these edits, he hasn't listen. Then I stopped, wrote on NBA wikiproject about issue, and to another respected editor. I am just so sick of these Balkan nationalists here on wikipedia, who just like this user, don't respect others work and putting insanely stupid tabloid references, or make edits based on people's tattoos, and other [stuff]. Don't tell me what is war edit and don't be rude and warn me with some bans and stuff. My 6t+ edits represents me as valid contributor, mainly of European-based basketball articles. Don't act like a professor to me. AirWolf (talk) 14:24, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
- Maybe I've gone a bit too far with first sentence, you kind of pissed me off a bit in post to my tp. But do you understand the point of my writing? Just read which references he provided on his tp, in edits, and you will see what is more valid. His contributions or mine. If you take a closer look, his whole contributions are based on some kind of Serbo-Croatian "war", wanting to say he in my opinion is a bit patriot/nationalist, can't make clear line in his case between these two. AirWolf (talk) 14:35, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
- I can sympathize with your frustration. Unfortunately, WP:EW is clear that "it is no defense to say 'but my edits were right, so it wasn't edit warring.'" Continue with WP:DR, as you have, and you'll be fine. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 18:29, 11 April 2014 (UTC)

NBA Rookie of the Year Award
Hi, Bagumba. Could you please page protect NBA Rookie of the Year Award? Persistent vandalism.Hoops gza (talk) 20:29, 3 May 2014 (UTC)
- I'll add it to my watchlist, but don't think a protection is appropriate yet. It seems like you have a dispute with a registered user, so semi protection would not help, and full protection doesn't fit either. Consider looking over Wikipedia:Dispute resolution: discussion is probably the best bet for now. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 20:46, 3 May 2014 (UTC)

Verifiable resources...
Hi. Me again. Are birth certificates reliable/verifiable resources? I even have some of the old Athletics rosters with pictures and names. I think it would be nice to be acknowledged. Really not a big big deal, but it would be nice.TiffanyDDuncan (talk) 17:23, 13 May 2014 (UTC)
- Wikipedia:Verifiability states that "verifiability means that people reading and editing the encyclopedia can check that the information comes from a reliable source." A birth certificate would not be readily available for others to verify. Also, a birth certificate is considered a primary source. Per Wikipedia policy at Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons#Avoid_misuse_of_primary_sources, editors should "Exercise extreme caution in using primary sources." Perhaps you could identify secondary sources such as a newspaper article or a book e.g. team media guide, that reports the births or Mr. Duncan's children? —Bagumba (talk) 01:08, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
- If you willing to share the pictures of the Athletics with the community, you can look at Commons:Contributing your own work for information of sharing them.—Bagumba (talk) 01:08, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Andray Blatche
Would you consider temporarily semi-protecting Andray Blatche? This citizenship thing has got out of hand. Tbh, should Filipino even be listed? He technically now has dual nationality, but what has happened with previous cases like this (if any)? Was the newly acquired citizenship added i.e. "American-Filipino"? DaHuzyBru (talk) 13:32, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
- As he seems to have both American and Filipino citizenship, how it is presented is a content issue, and not suitable for protection. I'd recommend dispute resolution, such as starting a discussion. Robert Sacre is one similar example, but I'm not sure if there is a standard convention.—Bagumba (talk) 00:29, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Barry Bonds Vandalism and Hate (Nothing New)
This is vandalism on his page, though it is outdated. There is also vandalism on his talk page, but I do not know if it matters. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Barry_Bonds&oldid=582064862 Joey Gallo (talk) 00:41, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- @Joey Gallo's Homeruns: Thanks for using user talk pages. Is there something specifically you are requesting?—Bagumba (talk) 01:01, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps the page for Barry Bonds could be semi-protected. Bonds is not active, so many comments from non-registered users much are vandalism. Unless something major happens with Bonds, it will not really help Wikipedia to allow random users with no account (and thus no fear of prosecution) to make changes. Joey Gallo (talk) 01:09, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- The article has been under indefinite semi-protection since 19 July 2011.—Bagumba (talk) 01:16, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- I got confused when I saw a different caption on his page compared to Miguel Cabrera. Do the two pages have the same protection? Joey Gallo (talk) 01:24, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, not all protected pages consistently show the lock symbol, if that is what you are referring to. A definitive way to see the protection (if any) for a page is to click on "View History", then click on "View logs for this page". That will show the log history for the page like the one I provided for Barry Bonds earlier.—Bagumba (talk) 02:23, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
- I was referring to the different caption on both locks. I thought Cabrera has higher protection. I do not know much about editing Wikipedia since I am new. Joey Gallo (talk) 13:04, 22 June 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, Bonds has the high form of protection compared to Cabrera: semi-protection vs pending changes. You can learn more about protection at Wikipedia:Protection policy.—Bagumba (talk) 15:49, 22 June 2014 (UTC)

2014 NBA draft
Bagumba - Any way we could restrict editing except for autoconfirmed users? Every year there is "funny" vandalism leading up the draft, then there is total chaos on the article on draft night as everyone wants to update the picks or goof off. Perhaps more palatable - could you (or another admin) keep an eye on the article and restrict it if (when) this comes to pass either on draft night or before? It's the same story every year. All the draftee articles are going to get wrecked as well, but no way around that I suppose. Thanks. Rikster2 (talk) 14:42, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- Been eyeing it for a few days, and went ahead and protected until Friday. I had been holding out hope since I didn't see any of the past articles protected, but I guess its because nobody bothered reporting it. Don't know if I'll be around draft night, so post to WP:RPP as needed.—Bagumba (talk) 15:57, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

- @GiantSnowman: As it's looking like the same arguments that nobody else seems to agree with, I'll stay out of it for now. Since there doesn't seem to be any supporters, one strategy would be to just stop responding in hopes that it just goes away. Revert in articles if needed if proof by assertion is claimed. DYK for Anthony Watson (basketball)
On 1 July 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Anthony Watson (basketball), which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that former college basketball player Anthony Watson set the San Diego State single-game scoring record in 1986 and was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year later that year? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Anthony Watson (basketball). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
Zach LaVine
Hi,
Bagumbo, all I changed was his height and weight nothing else. His combine stats are listed as follows: http://www.nba.com/draft/2014/prospects/zach_lavine?ls=iref:nba:draft:tracker so for my nxt edit I will add that for you. I would understand if it was something to do w false background information but it was his height and weight. Here is ANOTHER source to VERIFY my findings: http://www.nbadraft.net/players/zach-lavine
THANK YOU,
-THE BOSS — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheBoss2008 (talk • contribs) 15:33, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
- @TheBoss2008: The difficult part is that without a citation or a note in the edit summary, an edit that conflicts with another reliable source might sometimes be mistakenly considered inaccurate. When there are conflicting sources on an NBA player's height, the convention is usually to use what is listed on their NBA.com profile. Afterall, Template:Infobox basketball biography displays it as "Listed height", which accounts for the cases it might differ from their actual height. If there is consensus, a note can be placed in the "height_footnote" parameter of the template. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 17:14, 2 July 2014 (UTC)
Zach LaVine Edit
Bagumba,
I am not trying to start an editing war over Zach LaVine. Just bc NBA.com says 6'5" doesn't mean it's rights. This was his height freshman year at UCLA, he has since grown. Don't get me wrong NBA.com is a great source but he's a Rookie just moving up to the NBA. His combine stats were a measured height w/o shoes of 6'4.5" and 6'5.75 w shoes on. I've seen this on paper from the combine and numerous workouts he had w teams along w different websites. Like I said I'm not trying to start an edit war but for someone whose seen the results I'm just trying to make sure they are right. Even NBA.com draft profile http://www.nba.com/draft/2014/prospects/zach_lavine?ls=iref:nba:draft:tracker has him listed that way, hey just haven't changed it yet. Sorry to create a commotion I didn't know filling out the right statistics would cause people to freak out just trying to list correct biography.
TheBoss2008 (talk) 16:54, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
- I'm sure you're trying to improve Wikipedia, and dealing with conflicting information is tricky because people can have different opinions on which source is "more right" than others. I'm not sure if you saw my earlier suggestions to you above about how conflicting heights can be handled. Regardless of which way you think it should be presented, it is never acceptable to resolve disputes by reinserting the same information repeatedly. Thanks for your understanding.—Bagumba (talk) 17:50, 5 July 2014 (UTC)
List of Arizona Wildcats in the NBA Draft
This article is now filled with broken cites. Would you mind cleaning it up? ~EDDY (talk/contribs)~ 23:49, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
- If you look at the version before my edits, the mass amounts of broken cites were already there. I am a volunteer here like yourself, and anyone can pitch in and improve it. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 23:59, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Editorofthewiki: Also, they look more to be unused as opposed to "broken". That style of footnotes used (defining them in a separate section than where they are referenced) is hard to maintain e.g in this case when they were cut/pasted from another unrelated article and its tedious to find which are not needed. I do try to make sure my edits have a net positive effect; in this case, cutting out wrong information while adding to the existing unused ref problem seemed to be a fair trade off.—Bagumba (talk) 00:09, 8 July 2014 (UTC)

Chandler Parsons, restricted free agent
Hey, Bagumba. Can you put the Chandler Parsons article on your watch list? Parsons is a restricted free agent, who just signed a letter of intent with the Dallas Mavericks late yesterday. Pursuant to the NBA rules on restricted free agency, his former team, the Houston Rockets, now has 72 hours to match or decline the Mavericks' offer to Parsons. The Rockets have already indicated publicly that they intend to do so. In the mean time, the usual crowd of IPs and newly registered users is doing their crazy dance on the article, changing this BLP article to read that Parsons is already a member of the Mavericks without any supporting sources. GoPhightins semi-protected the page last night, but the problems have continued overnight and this morning with registered users continuing to make such changes to the article and the Mavericks roster template. I already used my three reverts, with edit summary explanations, on the article yesterday evening. Can you add this one to your list? It's going to be a problem until the 72 hours expires. . . . Thanks. 12:14, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
- Also, as a separate, but tangentially related question -- why do the NBA roster templates link to the player's colleges and not to their college teams? On the space-limited rosters, I would think the college team links would be preferred. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 12:14, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
- @Dirtlawyer1: Roster templates use {{Player2}}, which uses {{college}}, which only links to the college article. Was there an existing template that links to the college basketball team article?—Bagumba (talk) 22:31, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
- Template:Dallas Mavericks roster: all of the players on the list have a link to their college, not their college team. In a player bio, I always link to both the player's college and the college team in the article; as you know, in text, I like to introduce the college team by stating the college's fully name first. Normally, in space-limited infoboxes, etc., we link only to the college team as the most closely related article. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 22:54, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
- The Mavericks link you provided links to players' colleges, not their college teams, which is consistent with my findings. However, your original question was: "why do the NBA roster templates link to the player's colleges and not to their college teams?" My original followup question was whether you knew of any existing templates that linked to college basketball teams that NBA project could leverage. Thanks.—Bagumba (talk) 22:59, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
- That would be a matter of changing the template coding, right? I'm a little out of date, but Freitjes and Technical 13 both used to do template coding work. If your looking for an example, Template:Infobox college football player converts "Florida Gators" in the "college" template parameter into a piped link to "Florida Gators football," as well as tying the team colors to the infobox display. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:17, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
- OK. I guess the answer to your orig Q of "why do the NBA roster templates link to the player's colleges ..." would be that nobody has bothered to change it. I usually don't have interest in that type of gnomish work to update 100's of entries. You can post at WT:NBA to see if there are any takers. Higher on my personal list of gnomish work (which I might never get to either) would be to coordinate a bot to tag all articles under Category:National Basketball Association as being part of WikiProject NBA.—Bagumba (talk) 23:29, 10 July 2014 (UTC)

Chris Bosh has agreed to a 5-Year 118 million dollar deal with the Miami Heat.
Also it says: "the Miami Heat in the National Basketball Association (NBA)." When it should say, "the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA)."

- The way we handle sports transactions is to wait for a definitive announcement from an identified representative of the player or team that the contract is official. Those references you provided are anonymous sources. Sure the deal is likely to happen, but as an encyclopedia we don't need to be in a hurry to report things that are not fully confirmed yet. This is consistent with WP:BLP: "We must get the article right." Reporters are paid to break news, but they are not always right. Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 23:46, 11 July 2014 (UTC)

- Gotta say, if we can't take being listed on the official roster on the official site (when he wasn't there last year) then we are painting FAR too fine a distinction for WP - one that makes no sense in real world terms. The Cavs site has a landing page welcoming LBJ back that you get before you can get to the content - it's official. Right now the article looks ridiculous with "Pending contract" sitting at the top and already showing him with the Cavs in text and club history reflecting it.
