Thank you muchly for your support in my recent request for adminship, which was successfully closed on 76%, finishing at 73 supports, 23 opposes and 1 neutral. Old Flag of France

Hello. Please don't enter the royal standard ( ) as national flag of the Kingdom of France. Its national flag was the white Drapeau blanc (File:Flag of the Kingdom of France.png), not the lily banner (see articles about the flag of France in the anglophone, francophone, German, etc. wikipedia). Thank you. Louis88 (talk) 12:58, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

It was the national flag of the Kingdom of France during the Bourbon Restoration see [1] --Barryob (Contribs) (Talk) 13:15, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Why then doen the 1820 painting "Surrender of Lord Cornwallis" show the white flag as flag of France instead of the lily banner? I doesn't seem to be the white naval ensign here... Louis88 84.131.233.202 (talk) 15:03, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Its possible that the white flag was the only one available or the painter got it wrong. --Barryob (Contribs) (Talk) 15:08, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, that seem's to be more theoretical than my explanation... ;-) I'd like to know where the author of that page has got the information from that the lily banner was the Restoration's flag... Louis88 84.131.223.73 (talk) 08:14, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Could you give some other evidence? Everything I've read before says that the pre-revolutionaty AND the restored Bourbon monarchy hat the white drapeau as national flag. Louis88 84.131.183.157 (talk) 18:49, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
As France was an Absolute Monarchy under the Bourbons, particularly with Louis XIV, in which France was the personal possession of the king (encapsulated in the possibly apocryphal, but nevertheless indicative, quote by Louis XIV: "L'État est Moi"), the Royal Flag of France should be used for the period 1624-1789. The Fleur de Lís of the ruling Bourbon family imposed on the white field of that flag demonstrates this. The idea of a 'national flag' predominating a royal flag at this time is an anachronism as the modern Nationalism idea of the French nation only comes into existence during the revolution. Wars during this period could only be conducted at the behest of the king of France, not the nation of France.Tttom1 (talk) 14:04, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

"Flags of France, 1682-1763. LaSalle planted the white flag of the Bourbon kings of France at the mouth of the Mississippi River in 1682, and Iberville made the settlement at Ocean Springs under the same flag in 1699. Three golden fleurs-de-lis appeared on nearly all the Bourbon flags, though sometimes it was entirely white. The blue field of the French flag had officially disappeared by royal decree of Louis XIV in 1659." Similarly: http://www.tfdc.org/FrenchFlags.htm
It appears there were at least 4 flags in general use: 1. White field with 3 gold fleur de lís( changed from the Valois dynasty blue field), 2. White field with many fleurs and the royal coat of arms in center, 3. White field with many fluers, 4. Plain white field. Adding to the general confusion, the royal french army carried a number of flags with each regiment having 2 colors, at least: the regimental color (drapeau d'ordonnonce) and a colonel's color( drapeau-colonel), the colonel's color is usually a white cross on a white field and there may have been similar all white flags for generals - this may account for the flag in the painting above. This plate shows some variations of white colonel's flags of swiss regts in french service: http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/dgdisplaylargemeta.cfm?strucID=589359&imageID=1236663&parent_id=585401&word=&s=&notword=&d=&c=&f=&sScope=&sLevel=&sLabel=&lword=&lfield=&num=48&imgs=12&total=63&pos=60&snum=Tttom1 (talk) 15:57, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Page moves

Hi Barry. Please remember to fix double redirects after making page moves. You left six of them when you moved Irish Government to Government of Ireland. Fixing links on templates, e.g. {{Governments of Ireland‎}}, is also advisable.

Also, please be careful of blind reverts - this added back in obvious vandalism (i.e. the ¾ sign at the top). Cheers, пﮟოьεԻ 57 12:25, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Er, I've just noticed you did exactly the same thing (i.e. not fixing double redirects) for Secretary-General of the United Nations. This is a major article, and leaving broken links to this is very unhelpful. Please go through your edit history and make sure you haven't left any other broken links after moves. Map at Kingdom of Scotland

Hi. Not quite sure why you reverted the change to the map at Kingdom of Scotland. New version is simply a zoomed in version of the old map, bringing the scale to that approximating to the map at the Scotland article. Not a change of content so much as a close up version with more detail seen as a result. Hope that explains things fully. Regards 80.41.209.149 (talk) 08:14, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Check it out:

Old version showing 'Orange dot' relative to whole of Europe

Close up version of same map showing greater detail.
It is not shown as an orange dot the image on the page is 250 px and cleary shows the Kingdom of Scotlands position realtive to europe. --Barryob (Contribs) (Talk) 17:17, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

British House of Commons

Since your move of the aforementioned article to House of Commons of the United Kingdom last February seems to have passed without a comment (so far as I can see), perhaps it would be equally uncontroversial to move Speaker of the House of Commons, in order to resolve the current mismatch. However, Speaker of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom is rather long and convoluted. What is your opinion on this? Waltham, The Duke of 01:25, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Speaker of the House of Commons (United Kingdom) isn't a bad idea the only reason I did not choose that for the HoC article is that nearly all legislatures us the format chamber of country --Barryob (Contribs) (Talk) 21:42, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
Sorry—I had forgotten to reply. Busy watchlist...
Your idea solves the problem of length, but, as you say, it introduces a new inconsistency. And I am not very fond of introducing acronyms in titles. If it weren't for the inconsistency with the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, I might actually be rather content; British does mean "of the United Kingdom".
So... Stumped again. Waltham, The Duke of 02:06, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Irish constituency maps

Hi Barryob, you created all the RoI constituency maps like Image:Cork East (Dáil Éireann constituency).png. I was wondering if there was one of the Republic of Ireland with the current constituencies drawn but without any of the constituencies highlighted? Likewise for the Dublin constituencies. The maps would be useful on Parliamentary constituencies in the Republic of Ireland. Tx, Snappy56 (talk) 18:27, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

This is one fuck of a coincidence (sorry for the foulmouthiness, but the extra workload implied by today's ToL rejection is...well, it's so big that the English language has not yet developed a word for it) but http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1b/Results_of_the_June_2008_referendum_on_the_Twenty-eighth_Amendment_of_the_Constitution_of_Ireland.png here may fit your bill. I've checked it as per Irish govt and I think it's right (if it looks gray when you look it, it's 'cos there's a cache problem - I think. Just click on it once/twice to see it in all its pastel glory) as per the May 2007 election. If you want me to upload an uncolored version, just ask. The reason why I'm here in the first place is to ask User:Barryob if he could rattle off a SVG map of same, since he seems to be SVG map dude. Alex Salmond

Why did you revert my edit to Alex Salmond's infobox? Thanks. --Philip Stevens (talk) 16:21, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

The Brown page is quite different. Dunfermline East was abolished and most of the constituency became Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath. With Salmond however, he was the MSP for Banff and Buchan until 2001 when Stewart Stevenson took over, then Salmond became MSP for Gordon in 2007. I think my edit should be returned as they show the dates and successor of Salmond's first seat. --Philip Stevens (talk) 17:45, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
I think the year should be changed, he wasn't MSP for Banff and Buchan (1999-2003) as he resigned in 2001. --Philip Stevens (talk) 18:26, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Lisbon Treaty - Belgian federative entity governments

I really don't get what you are talking about: In Belgium, for a federal bill to become the law of the land, it must be approved by the federal parliament and then receive Royal Assent (the King being part of the federal level only). For every federative entity, it's just the same - approval by the relevant parliamentary assembly and assent by the entity's government. How can you mention the assent on the federal level, but not the assents on the level of the different federative entities? There is strictly no difference between the legal value and necessity of these different assents! And an international treaty cannot be ratified without the approval by a law/decree/ordinance of every entity whose competencies are concerned (in the case of the Lisbon treaty all entities are concerned). Finally, there is no "hierarchy" with some kind of superiority of the federal level either; where a treaty would concern regional and community matters but not touch on federal competencies, no federal Act of Assent is needed and thus no Royal Assent, but indeed the approval of the competent assemblies and the assent of the regional/community governments.

I can find you the relevant sources in legislation if you need it (in French or Dutch - and when I have the time...), but in the meantime take it from me that I do have a Belgian law degree and I know what I'm talking about. Sigur (talk) 21:28, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Using Whyte as a source for Government discrimination isn't quite wrong, but is a gross simplification. "The most serious charge against the Northern Ireland government is not that it was directly responsible for widespread discrimination, but that it allowed discrimination on such a scale over a substantial segment of Northern Ireland. " Whyte is not an adequate source for what you claim it to be.Traditional unionist (talk) 22:36, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Scotland the Brave

Hi Barry, I notice you removed my entry for Scotland the Brave from the Scotland entry as a National Anthem. Someone linking to the page for the National Anthem of Scotland might end up a little confused: on the Scotland page there is only one 'de facto' entry, yet on the National Anthem page there are several. I'm not suggesting there are only those two- I'm just trying to make it more equivocal, and a bit more reflective of its source page.--Stevouk (talk) 19:54, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
