My Recent Rfa

I would just like to say thanks for the neutral vote in my recent RFA. I will still say thanks as from your comments and the other users comments that opposed me and gave me a neutral vote have made me make a todo list for before my next RFA. I hope I will have resolved all of the issues before then and I hope that you would be able to support me in the future. If you would like to reply to this message or have any more suggestions for me then please message me on my talk page as I will not be checking back here. Thanks again. ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 16:34, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

LAA's page

Could you give me/LAA advice to tweak it? If you had to chose, between only Keep and Delete, what would you say? LAA is trying to take a big step. I want him to feel that sense of accomplishment, like when you make your first edit or get your first barnstar. Thanks. WikiZorrosign 20:00, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks so much for your support in myRfA, which closed successfully this morning. TravellingCarithe Busy Bee 16:58, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Lapidarium

A tag has been placed on Lapidarium requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. ~**_mustafarox_**~ (talk) 02:51, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Been looking through some of the articles I creatend when I first started here a few days ago and I'm beginning to think they aren't really important at all. Particularly the fictional character ones about the Santangelos. I wouldn't mind seeing the back of them, how do you go about getting them deleted FTR? I know which ones. Gino Santangelo, Lucky Santangelo, Dario Santangelo, Steven Berkley, Enzio Bonnatti and Santangelo family Also, how do I change my signiture? Secret pages

Are you aware that your secret page has been deleted? - DiligentTerrier (and friends) 19:07, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

I left your "real" "secret" page, User:Basketball110/76876876726734 intact (even along with the redirect, User:Basketball110/2) per the "leniency towards established contributors" crap (for now) and deleted all fake ones and related barnstar myspace-ism (one page dedicated for this nonsense is more than enough). But since you don't care may I understand that I can delete the "real" one as well? Миша13 08:44, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Userpage layout

Hi. Have you ever wondered how your userpages look in non-monobook skins (which, conversely to what one might think are in common use, especially by long-standing contributors)? I happen to use the modern skin (a popular alternative) and I must say that the tricks with floating images completely obscure the action buttons (edit, watch, etc.) and generally look messy as you can see for yourself. Do you think you could do something about it? Thanks, Миша13 09:06, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

RE: Eco

Thanks for stepping in, I appreciate having you at my back. :) Speaking of which, any way I can help you out? How's life been? And why don't you enable your email? Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 04:58, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Guys, please do not talk about me behind my back, okay? That is just plain rude. And BB110, please (for the second time) stop inserting yourself into conversations I am having with MoP. That is extremely rude.

I deleted the text I left on MoP's page, as my problem with him was resolved and there is no further reason to keep it front and center. BB110, if you have any respect for me (which, quite frankly, I've not seen to date), you would delete this section of your page immediately (this is blatantly insulting) and remove your message on the MoP Talk Page that relates to me (since it is not connected to anything). Ecoleetage (talk) 15:43, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

  • Excuse me, but "everyone" is not talking behind people's backs. That is a lame excuse for bad manners. Having this section on your page holds me up to ridicule. You should be ashamed of yourself for keeping this here. Ecoleetage (talk) 19:53, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
I keep everything for record, and this is part of everything. And I agree, everyone is not talking etc. I gave you my suggestions, because I knew someone else was going to do that anyway, and I thought you might take it better if it be someone you knew. I don't exactly appreciate you calling me a "rude kid," as I consider that an attack. Also, the only reason I replied to you on MoP's page was because I saw you leaving messages on his page w/o a reply, and the same on Diligent Terrier's page, whereas I am watching both. Basketball110 My story/Tell me yours 22:08, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Okay, this is where I am coming from: I never insert myself into a conversation (online, offline, whatever) where I am not being addressed. If I have to add something, I prefix my messages with something along the lines of "Hello, I am sorry to intrude, but if I can..." etc. That's how I operate.

Eco's world: If I ask a question, I like an answer. If someone promises a commodity delivered at X date, I expect it delivered at X date. If someone is nice to me, I will go the extra mile for them.

As for me being civil -- for the past couple of weeks, I have been under constant and often nasty criticism from a variety of people here on WP. I am not going to ID the people here, since it is not in my character to talk about people when they are not present to defend themselves. Some of these comments were in AfD discussions, which I found astonishing -- who the hell are these guys to ridicule me in front of my peers?

On several occasions, I thought of quitting WP because I hated the mean spirited comments I was receiving. Except for MoP and two other good folks, I've received almost nothing in the way of no-strings-attached positive support.

As for being rude, do you know that I've given Barnstars to people with whom I've had fights -- as a way of saying sorry and making amends? That takes a grand total of 30 seconds to do, but the effects can resonate forever.

As for lacking civility, please go to the talk page for Pontius Pilate's wife -- please see who is trying to keep order in the face of attacks by a malicious editor who openly belittles efforts to expand the page. Yeah, me -- I am getting knocked about and no one comes to my defense. That page just got WP:GA status based on my work -- and do you know how many people spontaneously congratulated me for my efforts in doing this? Zero. Isn't that nice?

The only thing I would ask of people on WP is simple: A spontaneous word or gesture of praise when someone feels I did something worthwhile. I am making a serious effort to contribute to WP, but I am not getting the feeling that anyone cares. So please excuse me if I am a bit cranky -- it can be difficult to be pleasant in a less-than-pleasant atmosphere.

That's quite an aria, no? Ecoleetage (talk) 22:53, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

I agree with you, but in the case of butting in on a conversation, I was just trying to help you and MoP with a suggestion or comment. As before, I was just trying to help. Basketball110 My story/Tell me yours 23:36, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

I know. And do not think you are not appreciated.

P.S. Honestly, I don't know why I bother. Absolutely no one has spontaneously reciprocated the gesture with me. I guess people think it is better to receive than to give. Or maybe they just don't think? Ecoleetage (talk) 01:07, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

P.P.S. Actually, someone just did -- and I am happily shocked. I guess people read this talk page! Ecoleetage (talk) 01:55, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Why don't you get email? It would make off-wiki communications so much easier. :) And don't worry, you handled the situation well... something I can't say for myself... heh. Oh well, cheers! Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 02:28, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Clarification It seems that someone (who will not be ID'd) read my comments here and claimed that I was "begging" for awards. That is absolutely not what I intended to get across. I was simply expressing a general sense of frustration regarding my WP experiences. Obviously, my rambling went on a weird detour -- I am sorry for any confusion. Ecoleetage (talk) 03:02, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

As the person not being "ID'd" here, I'd just like to point out that the "give a barnstar to a user," then complain that no one reciprocates it, is basically begging a person to reciprocate it. Metros (talk) 03:09, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
Well, I would apologize (again) if my comments were misconstrued. I was only venting my frustration about my WP experience, and I obviously went off on a stupid tangent that was not well-considered. I would ask that you please Assume Good Faith and acknowledge that people are apt to insert a foot in mouth on occasion. Thank you. (P.S. And also -- English is not my primary language. I am just a Portuguese guy trying to get a grasp on this language. A luta continua.)Ecoleetage (talk) 03:50, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Oh, before the door closes

I just wanted to comment on something you said in your retirement letter:

"My contributions aren't being taken seriously by most anybody. Since my minor incident, I'm just a joke to some "big time" admins. I've worked it all out with one of them, and partially from that decided that I should, as Basketball110, shove off."

I take your contributions seriously. And if you determine your sense of worth by what other people think of you, then you will be stuck in a never-ending cycle of paranoia and self-doubt. Trust me, anyone who thinks you are "just a joke" isn't good enough to clean your toilet -- don't put any value in what those type of people have to say. Ecoleetage (talk) 03:14, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Well, my door is always open for you. And don't worry about your "minor incident" -- in the scheme of things, it doesn't register. Besides, intelligent people learn from the mistakes they make and forgive the mistakes made by others. Ecoleetage (talk) 03:43, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Regarding your comment: "Do you know what my minor incident was?" As a matter of fact, I do. I never do this, but for this occasion I dug deep and pieced together what transpired. Yes, that wasn't your finest moment. However, I have very serious reservations about the manner in which this was handled. In fact, that circles back to my previous rant about some WP people holding others up to ridicule. In any event, you've apologized for your lapse and no one is holding it against you. I might suggest just taking a breather from this place and then come back and pick up where you left off. Ecoleetage (talk) 12:20, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

You're coming back? Hooray! I know you couldn't keep a good man down! Ecoleetage (talk) 10:19, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Man, please... :(

Please man, I know this may sound really stupid, but don't let the grind get to you. I'll say right now, even as an admin, there are those on this encyclopedia that have their heads in places where they can't feel the real world anymore. And please, don't let them discourage you. Screw being a great editor; you're a great person, hell, awesome even, and way too awesome to be picked on by some stupid drama. I've seen countless friends get knocked off by the idiocy that lingers around dark corners rearing its ugly head from time to time, and I hate to see that happen. Nobody deserves to get stressed out of this.

Now, that being said, I respect your decision no matter what it is and I'll back you up 150% wherever you go. And I know that you have very good reasons for leaving, nobody should say differently. You may never read this, but if you do, and happen to get email, please do email me so that I know how things are going. I hope life turns around; you'll make it through, I know you will. :) Rock on, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 05:04, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Yo. Allow me to insert my comment here. If you keep editing, then those "minor incidents" become less and less important. Of course, there will always be idiots that will try to use the incident to attack you, but those attacks become less and less effective with time, until they just become useless. Of course, if remembering the "minor incident" really pisses you off, then maybe you should just start over under a new username, but remember that there is a good chance that one day someone notices your link to this account, so the best thing is that you get a wikibreak to get yourself over the incident. --Enric Naval (talk) 00:15, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Hey, I was wondering if you're going to do that thing we discussed earlier. If you're interested, I certainly don't think you're a "joke", and have found that the community is very kind and forgiving to people that demonstrate a will to reform... hell, I've made deleting the main page and indefinitely blocking other administrators a sport around here, and I don't think that I'm looked upon in that bad of a light. Send me an email if you want to discuss things. east.718 at 23:21, May 31, 2008

My RFB

Thank you for your comments in my RFB. Since it was only at 64%, it was a shoo-in to be unsuccessful, so I withdrew. I didn't want it to run until its scheduled close time because my intent in standing for RFB was to help the bureaucrats with their workload, not give them one more RfX to close. Through the course of my RFB, I received some very valuable feedback, some of it was contradictary, but other points were well agreed upon. I have ceased my admin coaching for now to give me time to revamp my method. I don't want to give up coaching completely, but I'm going to find a different angle from which to approach it. As for my RFA Standards, I am going to do some deep intraspection. I wrote those standards six months ago and I will slowly retool them. This will take some time for me to really dig down and express what I want in an admin candidate. If, after some serious time of deep thought, I don't find anything to change in them, I'll leave them the way they are. I'm not going to change them just because of some community disagreement as to what they should be. Will I stand for RFB again in the future? I don't know. Perhaps some time down the road, when my tenure as an administrator is greater than one year, if there is a pressing need for more active bureaucrats, maybe. If there no pressing need, then maybe not. Useight (talk) 03:05, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Just a heads up

I thought you might like to know that the Awards Center page has been deleted, along with its newsletter.  :(

So, where do we go from here?

To new and even more interesting projects, of course!

As announced in the newsletter, I've been preparing to co-coordinate a large collaboration/competition called Around the World. It was going to be run at the Awards Center, but since that no longer exists, the collaboration will be hosted somewhere else.

Around the World will begin July 15th as planned - it's location will be announced soon.

It'll be a blast. In the competition, participants will be helping to develop over 200 pages (drafts, which will be moved to article space once they are ready), using advanced tools to edit every single one of them!

This is going to be interesting.

And the event shall have awards which are being created specifically for it as we speak!

If you would like me to keep you informed of this and other interesting collaborations I'll be working on and/or organizing in the future, please drop me a note on my talk page, and I'll be happy to keep you in the know.

I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

The Transhumanist 21:40, 26 June 2008 (UTC)

What is Around the World?

It's a collaboration!

A collaboration using advanced wiki-tools!

The event is being co-sponsored by Wikiproject Lists of basic topics and WikiProject Geography, and participants will be "traveling" all around "the World" visiting each country online (here on Wikipedia) as they apply advanced wiki-tools to improve pieces of the profiles of each and every country on Earth!. Each pass through these pages is a "trip around the World..."

The set of pages we are working is currently located at Wikipedia:WikiProject Lists of basic topics.

Each page presents essential information on each country in a topic outline format, for ease of overviewing and navigating. Most of the topics presented are linkified, which turns these pages into a hypertextual map to material about each country on Wikipedia. When completed, they shall all become part of Wikipedia's contents system.

The pages share a standard format, with the information on each country presented in the same general order. So rather than tediously working on a single country to complete it, each participant works on all 200+ political entities, completing a single data item or detail across all of the pages!

For this they use advanced tools like WP:AWB, Linky, etc. It goes fast, and since others are doing this at the same time, it makes "the World" feel like a beehive, and the participants are its bees.  :) The energy is contagious.

And since you are moving from country to country, the tasks make it feel like you are traveling around the world, and you get to learn a little about every country as you do so. This approach also allows for greater efficiency, because by the time you've done 30 or so of a particular item, you've figured out how to finish it faster and more effectively (such as where to find the data or how to make adjustments), and this specialization speeds up development - but more importantly it reduces errors.

The tasks are varied, which adds even more variety to the project. Some tasks are look-ups-and-fill-ins, some are copy and paste, some are image hunts, some are maintenance adjustments, some are link fixing, some are blue-linking (creating an underlying redirect so a link turns blue), some are fact checking, etc.

Standing by to help are co-coordinators, who can lend a helping hand to participants, provide instruction and tips on how to use the tools, and help them find what they are looking for. Co-coordinators also use advanced tools to inspect the work of participants, and touch it up as needed, or if a task was done wrong throughout, point this out to the participant so he or she can make the necessary corrections.

Co-coordinators are working on the set of pages right now, to familiarize themselves with "the World" so they can help more effectively by the time the main event starts. But there's still lots of preparation left to be done, and we are looking for editors experienced in advanced wikitools who would like to become co-coordinators.

  • The project has a new GA: Gazette Building, thanks to User:Broooooooce.

Featured article

Featured Arkansas article of the month:

  • Monte Ne is an area in the Ozark hills of the White River valley east of Rogers on the edge of Beaver Lake in the U.S. State of Arkansas. From 1901 until the mid-1930s the area was a health resort and ambitious planned community. It was owned and operated by William Hope Harvey, a financial theorist and one time U.S. Presidential nominee. Two of its hotels, "Missouri Row" and "Oklahoma Row", were the largest log buildings in the world. Oklahoma Row's "tower section" is one of the earliest examples of a multi-story cement structure. The tower is the only structure of Monte Ne still standing. Monte Ne introduced the first indoor swimming pool in Arkansas, and was also the site of the only presidential convention ever held in Arkansas. (more...)

Re:Email test

I tried, but i don't think it worked. Try using Gmail instead. Much better, especially if you don't want to give out personal information. -- RyRy (talk) 21:34, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, you can always go to Special:Preferences. Go to the bottom, and you should see a box. Type in your email address there. You then have to checkmark a box, or two. Well, you'll get it when you see it. -- RyRy (talk) 19:17, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Beatles News
Project News
  • As you may have seen, the talk page banner changed a bit. It has a couple of bugs (most notably the categorisation problems), but the {{WPBannerMeta}} standardisation was long overdue. Thank you to Dendodge for sorting it.
  • The newsletter's back after a very positive reaction, and thanks are again due to Dendodge.
  • Article adoptions: Heather Mills will be a hot topic next month, as the truth will be referenced.
  • The hottest Project page this month has been The Quarrymen (now a GA). It reveals the most accurate history of their early days, because so many other web pages tell a completely untrue story (one web page said they lost a Carroll Levis competition to a woman who played the spoons :)

Issue of the Month

Apart from the usual vandals, there is an ongoing problem with Wikipedia editors deleting free and fair-use photos because they don't think they are of any value to articles, even though this sometimes leaves articles with no photos at all. These editors do not leave notes on talk pages, so if you see that a photo has vanished, check the talk page and the history log.

From the Editors

It's been a while, but the newsletter's back! After a short discussion on the project talk page, seemingly unanimous consensus to bring it back was reached. This issue, and subsequent ones, will probably be shorter - as we kept running out of things to say before! There's a lot to say this month, purely due to the long absence of a newsletter, but we'll keep it as brief as possible.

In order to get delivery by Denbot sorted, the special delivery interface has been changed slightly - but existing delivery options still stand. Inactive participants who want delivery should place their names on this list.

If you've just joined, add your name to the Participants section of Wikipedia:WikiProject The Beatles. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!

Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 014 – August 2008). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!
