Speedy deletion of The Sphinx:An Independent Magazine for Magicians

edit

A tag has been placed on The Sphinx:An Independent Magazine for Magicians requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company or corporation, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for companies and corporations.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the article or have a copy emailed to you. Notability of Richard J. Weibel

edit

A tag has been placed on Richard J. Weibel requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article, which appears to be about a real person, organization (band, club, company, etc.), or web content, does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Kingpin13 (talk) 18:26, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Joe Berg

edit

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Joe Berg, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Sources show he existed, not that he's notable

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Speedy deletion of Aldo Colombini

edit

A tag has been placed on Aldo Colombini requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Copyediting request

edit

I put in a request at Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors, but thought I'd also ask a prolific editor who might be able polish the prose of a would-be featured article. Millennium '73 failed FAC last year mostly because folks said the prose wasn't up to FA standards. I fixed every specific example they gave, but I'm not sure what else needs to be done. Would you be willing to help?   Will Beback  talk  05:13, 13 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Wikibooks Queried Book

edit

Hi, I'm putting this here as you seem to be more active on WP than WB. A user has queried one of your books (twenty questions for twenty preachers) asking if you intend any further development. As the query has been in place for 7 days without a response it is now considered a candidate for speedy deletion. If you do plan to continue work on it, could you surf over to WB and respond to the query please? thanks. Unusual? Quite TalkQu 08:42, 1 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Grab some glory, and a barnstar

edit

Hi, I'd like to invite you to participate in the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. In May, about 30 editors helped remove the {{copyedit}} tag from 1175 articles. The backlog is still over 7500 articles, and extends back to the beginning of 2008! We really need your help to reduce it. Copyediting just a couple articles can qualify you for a barnstar. Serious copyeditors can win prestigious and exclusive rewards. See the event page for more information. And thanks for your consideration. ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 14:38, 10 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

The drive will begin on 1 September at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 September at 23:59 (UTC). The goals for this drive are to eliminate 2008 from the queue and to reduce the backlog to fewer than 5,000 articles.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars
A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants. Some are exclusive to GoCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive!

Ref Desk

edit

As with Wikipedia at large, there is no process to become an active editor at the Reference Desk -- you simply start editing! Of course, as with many other places on Wikipedia, the RD has its own styles and conventions, both formal and informal. These are mostly laid out at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Guidelines, but here's my take on a short version:

  • We don't do medical or legal advice
  • Where possible, reference your answer, and if you offer opinion, make it clear that it's opinion
  • If a question (or answer) appears to be objectionable, the best response is generally to ignore it.

Happy editing! — Lomn 18:24, 24 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Bddmagic,

I've made extensive edits to IBM to give it better organisation and focus. I see that you've invested time in the article, too, and I want to assure you that my only goal is to improve the article for readers and bring it up to WP's high standards. Please forgive me if I've stepped on your hard work -- no harm intended.

Userpage design

edit

Hi there. You indicated that you wanted your userpage to be redesigned. Do you still want it done? I would be happy to do so, but I charge a fee for my services:

  • 25 constructive mainspace edits. This means adding verifiably sourced content, not just spelling fixes, vandal reverts, that sort of thing.

or

  • 15 new pages patrolled. See here for quick instructions on how to get started. The most important thing is to start at the back of the log, with the oldest pages.

or

If you would like me to design a userpage for you, please do one of the above, and leave a message on my talkpage with the relevant diffs (or a link to your patrol log), as well as any notes about colours or whatnot. → ROUX  23:48, 6 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

November 2010 backlog elimination drive update

edit
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

We have reached the midway point in our backlog elimination drive, so here is an update.

Participation report — The November drive has 53 participants at this point. We had 77 participants in the September drive. In July, 95 people signed up for the drive, and in May we had 36. If you are not participating, it is not too late to join!

Progress report — The drive is quite successful so far, as we have already almost reached our target of a 10% reduction in the number of articles in the backlog. We are doing very well at keeping our Requests page clear, as those articles count double for word count for this drive.

Please keep in mind the possibility of removing other tags when you are finished with an article. If the article no longer needs {{cleanup}}, {{wikify}}, or other similar maintenance tags, please remove them, as this will make the tasks of other WikiProjects easier to complete. Thanks very much for participating in the Drive, and see you at the finish line!

GOCE Drive – Final push

edit

Greetings GOCE Backlog elimination drive participant, We are now coming up to the last few days of the drive, the last for 2010. Currently, it looks like we will achieve our target for reducing the backlog by 10%, however, we still have huge numbers for 2009. We have 55 participants in this drive. If everyone just clears 2 articles each, we will reduce the backlog by a further 110 articles. If everyone can just do 3 articles, we will hit 165. If you have yet to work on any articles and have rollover words, remember that you do need to copyedit at least a couple of articles in this drive for your previous rollover to be valid for the next drive. There are many very small articles that will take less than 5-10 minutes to copyedit. Use CatScan to find them. Let's all concentrate our firepower on the first three months of 2009 as we approach the end of this final drive for the year. Thank you once again for participating, and see you at the finish line! – SMasters (talk) 04:09, 25 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

edit
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

We have reached the end of our fourth backlog elimination drive. Thanks to all who participated.

Stats

GOCE November 2010 backlog elimination drive graphs
  • 58 people signed up for this drive. Of these, 48 people participated in the drive.
  • Although we did not eliminate the months we planned to (January, February, and March 2009; and August, September, and October 2010), we did reduce the backlog by 627 articles (11.2%), which was over our goal of 10%.
  • 49 awards will go out to 33 of 48 participants. Check out the complete list of barnstar winners here.

Barnstars

If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you participated in the September 2010 backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). These roll-over words count as credit towards earning barnstars, except for leaderboard awards. We will be delivering these barnstars within the next couple of weeks.

Our next drive is scheduled for January 2011. In the meantime, please consider helping out at the Wikification drive or any of the other places where help with backlogs is needed.

Thank you for participating in the last 2010 backlog elimination drive! We look forward to seeing you in January!

Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors wanted at LSU

edit

Hi! I'm leaving you this message because you are listed as a Wikipedian in Louisiana. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors to help with Wikipedia assignments at Louisiana State University, which will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester. The role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).

If you live near Baton Rouge and you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador, or know someone else from the area who might be, please email me or leave a message on my talk page.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 17:08, 6 December 2010 (UTC)Reply
