WikiProject Genealogy - newsletter No.6

Newsletter Nr 6, 2018-12-25, for WikiProject Genealogy (and Wikimedia genealogy project on Meta)

Participation:

This is the sixth newsletter sent by mass mail to members in Wikipedia:WikiProject Genealogy, to everyone who voted a support for establishing a potential Wikimedia genealogy project on meta, and anyone who during the years showed an interest in genealogy on talk pages and likewise.

(To discontinue receiving Project Genealogy newsletters, please see below)

Now 100 supporters

At 3 December 2018, the list of users who support the potential Wikimedia genealogy project, reached 100!

A demo wiki is up and running!

You can already now try out the demo for a genealogy wiki at https://tools.wmflabs.org/genealogy/wiki/Main_Page and try out the functions. You will find parts of the 18th Pharao dynasty and other records submitted by the 7 first users, and it would be great if you would add some records.

And with those great news we want to wish you a creative New Year 2019!

Advice on awards articles

Hi! I've been working on a series of articles for the Canadian Comedy Awards and as part of a DYK promotion I've sandboxed an expansion of the 29th Genie Awards. If you have time, I'd appreciate your advice. The articles are at User:Reidgreg/sandbox4 (29th Genies), Draft:10th Canadian Comedy Awards and User:Reidgreg/sandbox3 (expansion of Young People Fucking to tie them together). If you don't have a lot of time, could you just check the Genie expansion, I want to make sure that's okay with you since you've been curating the existing article (also, since this would use up its DYK eligibility). – Reidgreg (talk) 15:09, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited 1st Canadian Folk Music Awards, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Aquarius Records (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).

Requesting assistance for an AfD ❗️

Your assistence will be greatly needed over the AfD for model Kätlin Aas (and the RfC I started on it) ASAP because it seems you’re the only one who patently understands the policy about models articles. For the same reason you vote to delete model Carrie Salmon’s article is the same reason people want to keep Aas’s—even “speedy keep”! Even so far as believing directories create notability, significant coverage, or improvement of article quality! I went through this on model Julia Dunstall’s article but they claim I somehow misunderstood general notability. Please explain this to them (!) because they think I’m proposing deletion for a personal vendetta against Aas. It’s so beyond goal post moving that they’re now trying to rewrite the rules. But there’s a “we should keep it because she’s Estonian” bias over there by some editors as well. Thanks. Trillfendi (talk) 21:08, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Re: Dubrovnik

Thanks for the heads up - was not aware of that! GregorB (talk) 12:52, 14 January 2019 (UTC)

Nicolas Canniccioni

Hi Bearcat, I am Nicolas Canniccioni. Are you from « The Little Girl Who Was too fond of Matches » promotion team? Cause this page under my name looks like it... I don’t need any Wikipedia page, i feel it’s very very pretentious to have one at this point in my career. I will kindly ask you to erase it please. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of LGBT events, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Cranbrook (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).

Daniel Cockburn

Hey Bearcat, I just found an interview, confirming more vague statements on the subject in another one I'd found before, that goes into some detail about Cockburn's issues with mental illness for want of a better word (paranoia) which informed the process of making You Are Here (2010 film) (under Production/Inspiration). You are welcome to plumb the sources I've used at the article, which I expanded a lot today, for the cockburn article. ZarhanFastfire (talk) 06:26, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Redesigning WIkipedia's Spam Defenses

Hello,

I’m King, a current Junior at Stanford University. You’ve spent many years on Wikipedia and you also mentioned that you have created bots to do mundane work. I am curious what you think about the current system of flagging articles and issues and how it could be optimized. Maybe Machine Learning tools could be implemented? I can also be reached at iamking-at-stanford-dt-edu. (Formatted weirdly to protect myself from bots) Would love to hear from you either on Wikipedia talk or via email. Thank you for your time!

P.S. I grew up using Wikipedia and would love to have the opportunity to contribute back to this community-powered knowledge base. Speaking with you would be greatly advantageous. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kingalandydy (talkcontribs) 04:56, 18 January 2019 (UTC)

Paul Hellyer

Could you please unprotect Paul Hellyer? You semi-protected it 8 years ago but the reasons for protection have long since lapsed. 199.7.157.17 (talk) 17:40, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Current & Former Professional Athletes From Maryland listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Current & Former Professional Athletes From Maryland. Since you had some involvement with the Current & Former Professional Athletes From Maryland redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so.
