Hey Bedford! I have the perfect DYK article I just wrote. I think you are bound to be able to get a good one out of it. Check it out Christopher Harrison. Charles Edward 03:04, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I nominated it, but you'll get sole credit for creating it. Note that if you start an article on a person, you should type {{WPBIO}} on its talk page so the BIO WP knows about it as does the Indiana WP.--Bedford Pray 04:40, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

WQA on you

edit

As you know, a WQA was filed against you by User:Broooooooce. Some of the issues are not for WQA, but there are some that are cause for concern. However, you seem to be a talented editor, and I trust that a reminder will be sufficient: please remember that personal attacks and incivility drives away contributors, distracts others from more important matters, and weakens the entire community.

If someone is harassing you or something, you know the way to handle it, I'm sure. (ANI is probably the best option so someone uninvolved deals with it) But responses like the one at the WQA ("lament lament lament") are not going to help - they simply escalate the dispute, and you end up being (legitimately) dragged through the various forms of dispute resolution for something that's very avoidable - I don't want to see that happen here either.

If you can refrain from engaging in that sort of conduct, and be civil in your interactions with others wherever you are on wiki (even if it's on the WQA page itself) that would be great. If you take note of that, then I think the matter has ended and I will close the WQA. Cheers - Ncmvocalist (talk) 15:44, 1 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hines House Picture?

edit

Hey man, I took a picture of the house which should logically be at 1103 Adams Street. Well, this is what was there.

Since I couldn't find a numerical adress posted, I assumed this is correct. The architecture on the house certainly looks old and it would explain why you couldn't find the house when you looked for it.

On a different note, since you've done a lot more historic site entries than I have, I'd like your opinion on my write up of Riverview at Hobson Grove. Thanks in advance! I'm planning on adding two sites on the National Register of Historic Places, Cherry Hall and Van Meter Hall, both located on the campus of Western Kentucky University.

Regards,

OPMaster (talk) 21:10, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have doubts that that is the Hines House; doesn't look like a place where a man of Hines' stature would live in. I'll ask the Kentucky Historical Society. Your two article look very nice; your Cherry Hall article could get a DYK nom from me if some interesting fact is added and cited.--Bedford Pray 22:31, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've looked, and it could be; Hines House is said to be Federal architecture, which is mostly brick.--Bedford Pray 23:02, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I know it seems odd that R.C. Cola would now be using it as an office, but I've seen stranger things happen. I finished the Van Meter Hall article, if you're interested in having a looksee.

Bowling Green NRHP Sites

edit

Thanks to your initial message about the Hines House, I've gone a little bit bonkers documenting NRHP sites here in Bowling Green. I'm wondering, is this insignifigant, or is there a real drive on to document every single place on the NRHP? I added the Western Kentucky University Heating Plant, but I really wonder how many people would actually care to read the article about it.

Anyway, just thought you might get a kick out of inspiring somebody to write up a bunch sites in this area of the state.

Regards, OPMaster (talk) 00:05, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm glad to here I encouraged you like this. There are two monuments on the National Register in Fairview Cemetery. One I already have pictures of, but the other I still need. I'd appreciate you taking pictures of it.--Bedford Pray 00:58, 6 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

re: Indiana in the Civil War

edit

In theory, I can :) Two problems with this: (i) I'm very busy at the moment (the house is being extended, we've got builders everywhere, and things are going wrong) and (ii) it uses cite templates (which make copy-editing difficult). On the latter point, it might be a good idea to split it into notes and refs (see Operation Camargue): it looks neater for FAC, which presumably is your ultimate destination. I'll try to take a look in a day or two, --ROGER DAVIES talk 05:16, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I understood that :) I should have stressed the "I" to make it clearer. The problem is that I enjoy copy-editing very much and hate to see tasty morsels slipping away :) I don't know a good ACW copy-editor though Hlj has a great track record and can certainly tell you which bits need work (known, strangely, as "copy-tasting" rather than "copy-editing"). Qp10qp is an academic and a fine copy-editor (with a background in late medieval European history) but he can turn his hand to nearly anything and has done a fair amount of Milhist stuff. Otherwise, Ruhrfisch or Finetooth are both extremely competent. Finally, you could try Scartol or Yllosubmarine: they both concentrate on literature but are excellent as providing a copy-edit combined with copy-tasting (ie questions and suggestions as they go). --ROGER DAVIES talk 05:47, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

NHLs by Fourth of July, or bust

edit

Hi Bedford -- I don't know if you follow wt:NRHP closely or not; maybe you saw this thread: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#NHLs by Fourth of July, or bust. Anyhow, I and some others are on a drive to create stubs, at least, for all the remaining NHLs lacking them, and i notice that 24 or so of the remaining 100 are in List of NHLs in OH. Sometimes when i do NHL stubs, i have been putting in just a sentence or two (leaving no problem if anyone wants to beef it up to 1500 chars and get a DYK later), the NRHP infobox, and adding NHL designation date to infobox with a link to NHL summary webpage. It would be great if you would help out with any of these.... Cheers, doncram (talk) 21:43, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I did see it, and am planning on taking pictures of NHLs in Indianapolis this weekend. I'll try to do those in Indiana and Kentucky.--Bedford Pray 22:17, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Great, though i didn't mean to imply we were going to try to get photos for all the NHLs by July 4. List of NHLs in KY and List of NHLs in IN are, by low standards, "complete" already perhaps, but i note with just a few clicks that there are problems. For example, KY's Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site has an infobox showing it is an NHL at the top, but the infobox doesn't have a designated= NHL date and does not include the nearly-standard NHL summary webpage link (which would document the NHL date). It's not clear what we'll try to do, standards-wise, but perhaps getting the NHL summary link into every article is one goal. Also that article doesn't include the NRHP text/photo PDF file links which are nice too. Your checking for that kind of stuff, and fixing it and/or mentioning such in the Fourth of July checklist column, would be most appreciated. Thanks! doncram (talk) 23:39, 12 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

references for DYK articles

edit

Hey, we overlap considerably in our interests, and i would like to continue to get along well. It offends me somewhat, however, to see in many of your DYK articles (sometimes expansions of stubs that i started) that you use bare references. It offends me because it seems sloppy and sorta mean, leaving it to me and others to clean up after you. For example, in the Harrison article up for DYK tomorrow, I could add NHL and NRHP related references, and otherwise improve the article somewhat, but I pause because it appears to me you didn't describe the references you use properly. I don't know if I should "help" or not, it sorta feels like you want to exploit my good will, that you wouldn't bother to do the basics yourself. In one article recently that was an expansion of a stub i started, you added what i view as poor, bare references, which in fact were the same references as the good-quality references i had already added, but it appears that you didn't bother to notice. Anyhow, I just want to ask you to try to do better. I think it would be relatively easy for you to deliver proper references. I hope you will take this suggestion in a positive way. sincerely, doncram (talk) 05:16, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I use the reference style that I did when I went to college: AUTHORLASTNAME, AUTHORFIRSTNAME. NAMEOFARTICLE(IFRELEVANT), NAMEOFPUBLICATION (PUBLISHER, DATEORYEAROFPUBLISHING). pg.PAGENUMBER. If its a webpage, it's usually easier to just give the site address. If I did all the fancy citations style, which makes it almost impossible to decipher what is reference and what is main article, it would be easier on me not to contribute anything. It's the ridiculous reference style that is why I only have 2 GAs to my credit when I could possible have 20-30 by now; it's not worth the effort. I can happily live with a bunch of B's.--Bedford Pray 05:25, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bedford, you do know you're supposed to archive the previous set of hooks when you post a new update to the front page, don't you? You haven't done it on several occasions lately. Gatoclass (talk) 06:08, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes. However, I've heard I should do it immediately, and then I've heard to wait until its taken off before I put them on the archive. As a result, I tend not to do either, although I would if I knew which way it is supposed to be.--Bedford Pray 06:32, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I left some instructions on the discussion page, but basically, all you need to do is archive the previous set of hooks either just before or just after you post the new ones. I prefer to post the new update first, and then I just reload the previous edit from the history page and delete/unprotect the old image and then archive the old set of hooks. It literally only takes me a minute to do both, so it really isn't an onerous job. But it really needs to be done because you can't assume the next updater will know you didn't archive. On the other hand, not doing the notifications doesn't matter so much because they are left up until someone does them. Gatoclass (talk) 15:15, 23 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fyi, there are 2 NRHPs in Magoffin County, not including the courthouse building which does not appear to be a NRHP, now listed in table format at List of Registered Historic Places in Kentucky (Madison County to Owsley County)#Magoffin County. doncram (talk) 00:59, 27 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

NPS NHL photo contest

edit

Hi Bedford -- See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places#June 30 email deadline for 2008 NPS NHL photo contest. I didn't know about this contest before. You should submit a couple pics! Ten percent of submissions last year (12 / 125) were winners. doncram (talk) 20:17, 28 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I hear their email inbox is full up. But CDs postmarked by tomorrow are ok. Also, i wonder if you could tally your own NHL pics, at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/PhotoCreditsForNHLsByState. It would help me greatly right now if you right away could visit what is there for u ( i spotted 3 NHL lead pics in IN for u so far ), correct, and add your others. If not, that's ok, it just would be a real help if done right away. Thanks! doncram (talk) 03:19, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I just got back. I have a lot of NHLs in Louisville, and took one for the Daniel Beard House on Wednesday I need to put up.--Bedford Pray 03:20, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
