About the source files..

I have read all of the comments, but none of the less I do not know what you mean by "source files". Are you asking for me to cite sources? I am just confused on what you want me to do lol. But I read all of the comments and I saw what you were talking about on regard to Photoshop. Unfortunately, I do not have Inkscape or Illustrator. Keeby101 (talk) 02:02, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Oh. I think I am starting to see what you are talking about now to an extent. Re-reading what you said in the comments, I saw that you were having trouble with the file being a JEPG. I will indeed go back to the original psd file in Photoshop, but unfortunately since I do not know Photoshop all too well and since I do not know what tools to use on Photoshop to do what you are asking me to do, I still find it difficult to understand what you are talking about for the most part. I also still have trouble understanding what you are talking about on regards to the sources that you are asking for. Apologies. :( Keeby101 (talk) 02:06, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

P.S. I hope I am not frustrating you with this. I am just having difficulties understanding all of this fully. Regards. :) Keeby101 (talk) 02:15, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

I just mean that the jpeg is your final product. You have a psd file with layers, containing the topographic stuff in one layer, and the colours you added in other layers, yes? Begoontalk 03:46, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Images help

Is there any chance you could help me out on my other image? It would be great to see some type of marker to point out Jassini (written Jassin on this map) on File:Map of German East Africa showing Jassini.jpg. Could you do that by adding a dot or something? Ryan Vesey 04:14, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, but give me a little time to see if I can do something about the watermark, too. No promises on that, it's a bit intricate but should be do-able. Begoontalk 04:20, 21 September 2013 (UTC)
Done - as best I could - it's a very low resolution image, but I think it looks just about ok at that size. Begoontalk 06:47, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Contesting Deletion Notice

Good day Begoon, a lot of time was spent ensuring that the Pearce Robinson article met Wikipedia's requirements. Also in terms of citations and reference verification, you are free to check with the very institutions in question. If official notification and or documentation is required that can be provided to you as soon as possible. If you require the university of kent to place a notice on their website with the information, it will also be done as soon as possible. But instead of deleting just say what you require and it will be fixed Capture2015 (talk) 17:59, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Bot gone wild

You should read my 1714 30Sep2013 post at “Bot gone wild”.Sammy D III (talk) 18:10, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

I read it. I also read the post where you said my comment "sounded crazy", and that we should "believe you, because you know crazy". My only post in that thread (a thread which was not about you), was also not about you, or aimed at you. I realise you feel strongly about this bot, but calling my comment crazy, and on other people's talkpages, calling my comment a "shill" for the programmer, when it was nothing of the sort, has hardly endeared you to me, Sammy. You took it all far too personally - the thread was about more than just your issue. I've made the one comment I felt I needed to in that thread, where I gave my opinion that Cyber was doing his best in difficult circumstances - I also suggested improvements or changes he might make. I don't really have anything to add at this point, there's quite enough noise there already, but thanks for the note anyway. Begoontalk 18:21, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Good work on the Hohlraum diagram!

File:Laser_hohlraum_target_energy_coupling.svg looks really great! Well done! --Slashme (talk) 08:34, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Heh... thanks for the note. I actually remember thinking it was a pretty "ordinary" image, at the time, after I finished it. I tried to recreate the bitmap, but I didn't think I'd done particularly well with the gradients on the "explosion".
But that was a while ago, and now you made me look at it again, it's fine, I guess.
It's always nice to get feedback on something you've done, because you can't see the "wood for the trees" sometimes when you're fiddling around creating it, and you get bogged down with fussy little details that don't matter.
Glad you enjoyed it - because if nobody did, well, what would be the point...? Cheers. Begoontalk 14:40, 2 October 2013 (UTC)

Brunei

Hi there, I'm just wondering if "Recognized" is suitable to describe English on the Info-box for Brunei in regards to the reference used on footnote(b) which has got to do with section (2) of Article 82 on the Consitution http://www.agc.gov.bn/agc1/images/LOB/cons_doc/dokumen-dokumen_perlembagaan_2008.pdf Alevero987 (talk) 21:09, 3 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi. I saw your message about the map changes.

Spain is still 13 because the law has not yet been finally approved, but will (probably) soon be. Also could you please also change on the map the shade of blue for the age of 12 to another color (yellow maybe?) This has been requested numerous times on talk pages because there are way too many shades of blue and they get confused with each other. 188.25.159.68 (talk) 04:01, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

And Sierra Leone is 18, if you could change that too. (Ages_of_consent_in_africa#Sierra_Leone).188.25.159.68 (talk) 04:09, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

I can - and I'll check that out in a couple of hours. Begoontalk 04:23, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for updating...

the age of consent world map. I was astonished because the author said "anyone is free to update it". Anyone who is some kind of member of wikipedia or how does it work? Or really anyone with the right software and knowledge? I'm just curious. Thanks again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.42.105.36 (talk) 01:28, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Well, it's a wiki, so anyone is free to update anything.
I think you need an account to be able to upload files (images are files), though, so that would be one tiny restriction, but that's free and simple, see: Wikipedia:Why create an account?.
Then if you have the technical knowledge you can do it. If you break it, it can be reverted to the previous version, but you'd probably annoy people if you did that to files that are used in articles, so you'd need to test it first to make sure it worked.
For this file, you can actually do the simple kind of change you needed with a decent text editor, like Notepad++. (not Windows notepad, that can break things because it doesn't understand UTF and other text encoding types properly sometimes...)
That's unusual though, it's easy on this image because the author set it up well and neatly. Mostly you'd need software like Inkscape for vector files (svg) or GIMP for other graphics types. Those are probably the most popular - there are others...
Those are all free programs you can download, and I blue-linked them for you, so you can find out more.
Many people also use software like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator because they prefer them. Some people don't. Those are not free, though.
You can find lots of free tutorials on using the software by googling, and folks at The Graphics Labs here are usually pretty helpful. Begoontalk 02:11, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

Ok, that's fine, but means anybody could also spread wrong facts through wikipedia. So it's the community that needs to check everything back. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 109.193.198.6 (talk) 22:50, 9 October 2013 (UTC)

That's absolutely correct, and that's how it works. It certainly doesn't always work perfectly - but it usually works surprisingly well. Begoontalk 01:27, 10 October 2013 (UTC)

Thank you so much. You did such a good job of articulating everything that I was thinking when I saw the tags. The only reason I was even on Wikipedia (after such a long absence) is that I recently started teaching a GED prep course and one of my students was asking me trivia about the Mt. Washington Cog Railway locomotive and I was a bit embarrassed that I did not know the answers considering I had written that article. So, I told the class that I had written it and then came home and decided to look at it, only to find the tags. Then I was really embarrassed. Yes, that's the problem. If the things were just "improvement" tags that sat on the talkpage, then I'd have no problem with people using them to say "this is how I think this could be improved", and have a discussion about it. But whilst they sit atop the article screaming "broken - fix me now!" then they should only be used if that is unambiguously the case, and there was certainly no need for them there. Your example is of the very thing that bothers me the most - what the reader sees. You don't keep your mops and buckets on display in your showhome, you have a closet for them, and in the same way, the talkpage, an area the reader will not encounter, is a fine place for notices and discussions about improvement or maintenance. Thanks for taking the time to leave the note, and the barnstar too - tags on talkpages, you see - it could catch on  ... Begoontalk 01:33, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately, there's a certain mentality that doesn't care about a good faith editor being upset and possibly giving up on editing, so long as they can "win" or "save face". And even more unfortunately that is tolerated by way of inaction far too much. I'm truly sorry that you were treated in this way, and I know that a proper approach to discussion, without the unnecessary tags, rudeness and pointiness could have resulted in whatever changes may or may not be needed without any bad feeling or upset. But how did you make pie chart on a SVG type? :) — иz нίpнόp ʜᴇʟᴘ! 17:17, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

With Adobe Illustrator, which I have, you can draw a flat pie graph from the numbers, then I did a basic 3d transformation to get kind of a coloured "wireframe", but did all the shading/shadows and moving the slices around by hand, because Illustrator creates monstrous 3d shading SVG code. There's some opacity masking for gradients in there too.
If you've only got inkscape, then you have to look at extensions I think (I remember something called NiceCharts) - or OpenOffice/Gnumeric I think can export SVGs. There are also perl scripts around. Begoontalk 17:28, 12 October 2013 (UTC)

Mistakes? Don't see any...
It's a fantastic rendering of the png - very talented. I might have missed out the thin black keylines around the "floor" and "walls", but it's a diagram - so matching the original perfectly is not important. You did match it pretty perfectly, though, which takes great skill and patience, and I think that's some of the best work I've seen recently.
I guess the only thing you didn't mimic is the holes in the centre wall where you left them plain white and the original has them coloured. Nothing wrong with that - looks fine.
There's no need for the (svg) in the filename - the extension tells you that. If the upload wizard moans at you that there's already a png with the same name, just ignore it and save as .svg with same name anyway. Begoontalk 06:20, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Got some free time at office and draw that this one. Thanks for reviewing. :)--FreemesM (talk) 06:36, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your guidelines. As I am new to the work, I made certain mistakes. Your guidelines were so helpful and I will never repeat those mistakes hereafter. Thank you Mmahesh207 (talk) 08:05, 22 October 2013 (UTC)Mahesh

Making mistakes is how we learn. Nobody can get everything right first time, especially in a complex environment like Wikipedia.
I noticed that you have mainly been concerned with adding good, reliable content and a couple of great little articles about Coimbatore and railway services and the like, which are cool.
That's far more important than accidentally putting a silly little template in the wrong place.
Thanks for the note, and for the great work, and if you ever think I can help with anything, please feel free to ask. Cheers. Begoontalk 08:38, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Regarding wrong cite sources/unreliable information

Hello, I am Mahesh. I am a new user. I read an article. The information provided in a statement is not as per the citation provided to it, How can we guide that user (who added/edited that statement) that the citation he/she mentioned is wrong, or the statement is wrong? Mmahesh207 (talk) 11:49, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Well, the source supports the existing content, and they didn't provide a new source to support their change, so as far as I can see reverting it, and leaving the message you left here: (link...) was fine, and correct.
I wouldn't have made the addition you subsequently made, (here...), referring to vandalism, though - since the user may be editing in good faith, and may believe they are correct. The term "vandalism" should only be used in clear cases, as the links I left for you explain. Merely using the term can upset other users, and in general it's best to avoid doing so unless the issue is very clear-cut. Again, as explained in the links I left on your talkpage, the term is very narrowly defined here: WP:VANDALISM.
Regardless, they should provide a new/better source if they want to change material that is cited. Begoontalk 12:08, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Thank you, and sorry!!! :), for misusing the term 'vandalism'. And also is there any team in wikipedia to revert (within a short period) the changes that have made wrongly to an artice? Why I am asking this is :), the people who read the article (globally) while a wrong information is being placed in it, will not get the actual information no? Mmahesh207 (talk) 12:25, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
There are a lot of editors who patrol the recent changes page, looking for unconstructive editing, and a great deal of it is reverted very quickly. There's also a bot, User:ClueBot NG which does a great job of reverting some kinds of obvious vandalism. Most users have a WP:WATCHLIST of articles they have edited, or are interested in, and monitor them for recent changes. If articles are regularly subjects of unconstructive editing, they are sometimes protected for a period so that new users/unregistered editors cannot edit them. This is kept to a minimum as much as possible.
There are tools like Twinkle which make some of this easier.
All of that said, the way wikipedia works is that it relies on editors like you and I to constantly correct and improve articles, and you can be WP:BOLD and do that yourself at any time, provided, as I'm sure you would, you exercise care that your edits are themselves correct and well cited. Begoontalk 12:37, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

It's not the first time we've agreed. You tend to talk sense.
There's 2 ways of looking at this wiki thing - one is to fit in for the sake of fitting in - that works short term, sort of..., the other is to be yourself and wear your heart on your sleeve and act accordingly.
The latter, I believe, works in the long term. I think it's what you try to do - it's certainly what I try to do. We'll see which one works - but my money's on us. Honesty has never really failed me in my life yet. Begoontalk 19:30, 24 October 2013 (UTC)

License info

Hi Begoon, I am going to ask you something. Could you please tell me, If I vectorize and modify (by coloring, scaling or redrawing) this sort of image, which is taken from a NASA's publication [5], what should be the corresponding license? Should that be similar to this one? I mean should that be my own work?--FreemesM (talk) 07:49, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

Yeah - if you do the licensing exactly as per the example you give, that would seem fine. Orionist is a very experienced graphist, and you can trust them to have done it correctly.
You might want to look at using this (DerivativeFx): http://toolserver.org/~luxo/derivativeFX/deri1.php for uploading derivative files to Commons. It does all of the copying and creating of file descriptions for you, and saves a lot of time/errors.
One "gotcha" - at the last stage, when it's created the full description for you, copy the whole thing to your clipboard or a text file, because it's recently started "losing" that, and you need to paste it in again when it throws you back to the Commons Upload page. (at least that's what it's been doing to me). Still a great timesaver for generating good file pages of derivative files, though. Begoontalk 08:04, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick response. :) --FreemesM (talk) 08:22, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Just done this one [6]. I have faced a problem there. When I put text on that illustration, after uploading that was not visible. Thats why I transform the texts to path by using Object to path command. But still now I have another file, where those texts are in text format. What will be its remedy? I will be great full, if you review this illustration.--FreemesM (talk) 07:47, 27 October 2013 (UTC)
Heh - fonts are fun, aren't they? You should read this: Help:SVG#Font_issues, which answers most of the questions.
Basically, it's a trade off between filesize and ease of editing, and perfect reproduction of your design.
When it's only a small amount of type, I often prefer to pay the small increased filesize "price" by converting to outlines (paths) (which should always give a perfect match) rather than trying to substitute the font (which might not). With more type the size becomes more of an issue, and if you don't leave pure type in a hidden layer when you convert then it's got to be recreated from scratch for future edits.
Mostly with logos, which have a small amount of type, it's more important to get a perfect match visually, so paths/outlines is a better option than relying on mediawiki or the user to have the correct font available.
You should always include the plain type in a hidden layer if you convert to paths, so that it can be edited later (I forget sometimes, but that's lazy).
Your image looks fine - but that does seem like a lot of type in an image - typically you'd have that as accompanying text in the article or description. It does make the file pretty huge as paths/outlines. You can try different fonts, as indicated on the help page I linked - and if you want to test how the wiki software will render them before you upload - this is useful: http://toolserver.org/~jarry/svgcheck/stable/index.php - it shows you pretty much how wiki software will deal with your svg. It's subjective, anyway, and even though I think you both probably made much better edits overall than I did, neither of you took that horrible hard stripe off the poor guy's forehead, so it's all in the eye of the beholder... That's irrelevant, though - my concern was, and is, for collaborative editing and etiquette. Not everyone will always feel that way. I understand that. I also don't wish to pursue this as it will not be productive. I've already said everything I wanted to. Thanks. Begoontalk 20:26, 31 October 2013 (UTC)

Thank you (MarioSoulTruthFan)

Your advice was much needed. Sorry for what I have done. If I have more doubts I would ask you first, thanks one more time for the help.— Preceding unsigned comment added by MarioSoulTruthFan (talk)

That's fine. So now that you have had time to read WP:NFCC#8, what is your reasoning that the image "would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding"? As far as I can see, text saying he performed is more than adequate, and an image doesn't significantly increase people's understanding of that, or who he performed with. We can't include non-free images just because WP:ILIKEIT, or because they are decorative.
Also, I don't know what you did to produce the odd "signature" on your post, but it lacked closing </span> and </small> tags (which I added), causing stuff after it to appear in small type too - I assume you copied/pasted it from somewhere your post got autosigned - you should, instead, sign with 4 tilde characters (~~~~) which produce a signature automatically for you. See WP:SIG for how you can further configure and use your signature. Thanks. Begoontalk 12:59, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Well, nobody is fond of reading an article withouth a picture illustrating the subject. It might awakening people towards that post, instead of having only writting concerning the subject of live performances.
Let me just say I copied the post signature and thanks for editing I had no ideia how to do it.Yours truly, (MarioSoulTruthFan 15:04, 28 October 2013 (UTC))
With the signature, you should read WP:SIG (link...), which I linked for you. What you just did has no link to your user/talkpages, so it's against guidelines. As I said, the easiest thing to do is just add 4 tildes (~~~~), right at the end of your post, or click the signature icon in your toolbar:   or  , to add the four tildes for you.
As far as the image is concerned, "nobody is fond of reading an article withouth a picture illustrating the subject" and "It might awakening people towards that post, instead of having only writting" might be acceptable reasons to include a free image if a suitable one exists and you can find it.
This isn't a free image, though, so they're not enough - it fails this (#8): "would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding", and it absolutely needs to meet all of the rules at WP:NFCC, or it can't be included.
Have another read of WP:NFCC (link...) and let me know if you understand what I'm trying to explain to you as the difference between free and non-free images.
You really do need to understand this if you're going to be uploading images or including them in articles. It's policy, it's not negotiable, and you'll have no end of problems if you don't take a little time to understand it, but you carry on adding images. Yes, it may seem complex, or unfair, but it's the way things are, for good reasons - we are trying to build a free content encyclopedia, and keep non-free use to only essential content. I see no point in the picture being there I guess you are correct. The next time I upload a picture I will seek the reason on those four topics. I can't seem to add my signature with the four tildes, I can but it doesn't redirect to the tal page or user page. Any ideias what might be wrong with it? Thanks
Well, you're learning WP:INDENT, which is good.  . Have you changed your signature at Special:Preferences ? If you have, and it's not working properly, go back there and remove whatever you did from the "signature" box, then save. Then just by typing the tilde characters you should get a signature. It sounds to me like you tried to customise it, but didn't do it right. Read this for details: Wikipedia:Sig#Customizing_how_everyone_sees_your_signature. The "Treat the above as wiki markup" tick box matters too. Begoontalk 21:48, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Done. Thank you so much. From now on I will try to upload copyrighted material more carefully. MarioSoulTruthFan (talk) 23:04, 1 November 2013 (UTC)
