Sorry to see you go

Hope you end up reconsidering. Best wishes, El_C 06:43, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Hear hear.   AlbanGeller (talk) 08:36, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks guys (removing the bot-spam was a thoughtful touch too - these little things are noted and appreciated), but no, that's unlikely to happen in the short-term (I've long since given up trying to predict much more than that). I haven't been enjoying contributing much here lately anyway, so when admins exercise their petty grudges on noticeboards it pretty much convinces me I'm wasting my time. The close of that ANI in such a dismissive, insulting and downright hostile manner was just the final straw. I really don't want to donate my time to a community that empowers smug twats to strut around doing shit like that without taking them to task for it at all (with one notable exception - thanks Y). Karma will fix that in the end - it generally does, and I have faith in it in the medium term, but I'm not planning on hanging around holding my breath for that to happen.

I'm genuinely sorry to anyone who feels let down, but at the end of the day it's just a hobby, so if it's not bringing enjoyment any more then screw it as a way to waste time. I'm glad I used reply-link for this though - I needed to type Y's username from memory, and stunned myself by getting it right first time... -- Begoon 10:45, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Begoon, I don't know if this might be too forward on my part, but would you possibly accept payment for the sole task of Photoshop-reducing these images? It's just that the bot tends to reduce the unnecessary portions of these portraits, and my computer software is slow and limited. It's Christmastime and I'm feeling generous, and your contributions are certainly worth some kind of compensation. AlbanGeller (talk) 13:55, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
[1] Your money's no good here. I'm a sucker for a heartfelt request couched in a compliment though - so I'll try to hold my nose and look at them tomorrow - I'm not sure what time, because I have to travel tomorrow to see my daughter perform in a stage show, so please be patient. I wish I could just say "no", but I can see it's important to you, so I'll do it as a "one-off" favour.

I'm afraid it can't be an ongoing "thing" though - if you want to understand why good, experienced users are deserting in droves you could maybe take up the relevant aspects of their disgraceful behaviour with Bbb23 or, to a slightly lesser extent, ToBeFree, but I don't really recommend it if you're looking for anything more than trite platitudes or "poor old innocent me" dismissals. Culture change is hard, and not something I have time to fight for right now, so you seem to be stuck with the community empowered "losers" "rubbing their bloodied hands with glee" [2]. Sorry. I'm sure they'll help you crop your images if you ask them nicely - it's not like there's much skill involved. -- Begoon 14:49, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

To be slightly more serious - if you want some actually competent help in future when I'm not around, I know you're aware of WP:GL/PHOTO. The bot is a bot, so unintelligent, and makes poor reductions in cases like this - the graphists there would be happy to help. It doesn't matter if the image has been stupidly mangled by the bot, the graphist can always go back to the original source (but reminding them of that source doesn't hurt when you place a request). -- Begoon 15:07, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. I'll probably ask PawełMM in future. Again, I'm really sorry that you feel the need to take an indefinite leave of absence, since there are plenty of us who still appreciate you and all that you do. Will you hopefully still contribute to Wikimedia Commons? AlbanGeller (talk) 15:56, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
Paweł is a great graphist, and a selfless, helpful contributor. Asking them for help is a great idea, and I hope they don't mind me saying so. I'm not sure about the rest yet. We'll see. -- Begoon 16:04, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
Is there any particular reason why you're not keen on WP:PAID? AlbanGeller (talk) 16:48, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
I think probably you just can't afford me. Also, why should I be paid for editing a fair-use image. ? -- Begoon 16:56, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Thank you ...

missing Brian

... for improving article quality in December! There's a peer review open for Clara Schumann and a FAC for Jauchzet, frohlocket!, DYK? We miss Brian who would have helped.

I meant to send you this yesterday but got too tired. - Begoon, I'd miss you tremendously, ducks and fairness, - isn't it bad enough that people die? Please watch my talk for season's greetings, but my mood to write them just dropped even lower. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:00, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Gerda, thank you, as always. You're right, as always, but see my reply above for more details. I still have an outlook reminder set for you, and I won't overlook that, but otherwise, sayonara, I'm afraid. -- Begoon 10:48, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
While I understand, it reminds me of having being tempted to leave this place (in 2012) because I felt I could not be part of a community doing such a thing (no thanks, no heart ...), but deciding not to do some this favour. WP:Great Dismal Swamp is not on my watchlist, so I missed what you refer to. We missed 28bytes together, remember? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:55, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
Gerda, of course I remember - 28 is an editor for whom I have enormous respect and with whom I can't recall ever seriously disagreeing, who eventually, admirably emerged from disgraceful, shabby treatment with head held high.

AlbanGeller, who was kind enough to post here, was also wise (and kind again) enough to say this to me: "you shouldn't let those losers get to you (and, by extension, Wikipedia). Personally speaking, I think you're an inspirational contributor to this site and, in my humble opinion, your defiance in the face of those who wish to sully your reputation would far better serve the greater good than to walk away with them rubbing their bloodied hands with glee.".

We'll see. Nothing is forever, as you, of all people know, but at the moment I'm really not inclined to donate my time here so I'm going to let the dickheads "rub their bloody hands with glee" for a while. It says far more about them than it does about me. I think I mentioned karma above - I do have faith in that (and I confess that sometimes I don't mind helping it along a bit...). -- Begoon 12:27, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

(ec) We'll see, - "new hope" is one of the terms ("radiance and light" another) in our gift to the world this year - guess what, to be on radio live on 26 December! - the pic is not ideal, wish I'd find something more recent, could be almost abstract. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:34, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
El C once kindly (I think...) described me as "formidable". I'm not big on self-analysis, but someone else (in my personal life) also once said to me: "Shit, you're a basically very decent and good, outspoken person, but I sure wouldn't want you as an enemy..." I think it was supposed to be a compliment. I confess I had to think about it for a while, but in the end I decided I probably wouldn't want me as an enemy either. We'll see how it goes here. Your continued concern is, as always, "awesome" and greatly appreciated. I'm very glad, and humbled, to continue to have such a selfless friend. Be well, and take care. -- Begoon 12:45, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Wow

Wow, I was just coming by to thank you for continued excellent watchdogging like here, and then noticed that you're leaving? Sorry to hear that. Your efforts were greatly appreciated. I regret not saying something sooner. Best wishes to you. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:07, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

Cyphoidbomb, It's a saga. I just got pissed off with self-entitled assholes. Tell me you'd be happy with a dickhead edit like this. Read the rest of the talkpage if you like and follow the links. I don't necessarily recommend that cos it's boring.

Listen. I'm pleased to hear from you because you're one of the people I always enjoyed working with. You have so much "clue" and it's always a pleasure to deal with you. Take care, and be well. -- Begoon 16:21, 20 December 2019 (UTC)

@Begoon Haii, I'm requesting you to please Convert & upload The logo of Kazi Nazrul University in SVG format. Thanks Regards. Kulbhushan Jhadav (talk) 06:59, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

Konfederacja Wolność i Niepodległość

Hello, you've uploaded this photo: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Konfederacja_WiN_Sondaz_1.svg#file without any copyright issues. My file was deleted: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Konfederacja_Wolno%C5%9B%C4%87_i_Niepoleg%C5%82o%C5%9B%C4%87.png&action=edit&redlink=1 It's from the same source as yours. Since it has been deleted, I can't upload it once again. Why was the logo deleted? How do I upload it so it's not deleted due to copyright issues? Avneet Kaur

Hello,

I had edited a page of actress Avneet Kaur some time back. I tried to update the picture of the actress. But a copyright claim appeared in my talk page. If possible please update her picture as the picture is too old. The picture was taken in 2015, more than 5 years ago. She has changed a lot in these years.

This is the link to her page : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avneet_Kaur

Notice of ANI that mentions you in passing

Greetings, FYI I filed a request at WP:ANI titled "CIR-based community-imposed site ban re: RTG". In providing a basis for my request I mentioned you and your prior dealings with this editor. Your input at ANI is optional, i.e., invited but not specifically requested. Thanks for reading. NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 12:58, 3 August 2020 (UTC)

A Help

Hi, I would like to ask your help on this particular issue on Ariana Grande article. The article is so decorated with unnecessary fancruft and puffery, especially propagated by the user Mirrored7.

1. I removed the superfluous autograph image from the infobox and that user keeps adding it back. As we all know, Grande is prominently known for being a singer and an actress. However, that specific editor keeps adding the "songwriter" bit to the prose. I've reverted it thrice; and I don't wanna do it anymore. Yes, she writes some of her songs, and that is why "songwriter" is in the infobox, but further putting in the first line of the prose? That's misleading. She's not primarily known as a songwriter.

2. Just because I removed "songwriter" from the lead line and short description, Mirrored7 tracked my contributions and learned that I primarily edit on Taylor Swift articles, and has started to unnecessarily disruptive-edit the lead of the Taylor Swift article, over things that have already been discussed, resolved and settled with other users. This is petty fan war behavior and feels like WP:POINT.

Please look into this, as I believe you're experienced with dealing this, and also because you've warned this same editor for such disruptive activity before. Thank You. Regards BawinV (talk) 12:09, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi! There are already two users who disagree with your editing. You can discuss it on the talk page, but no edit wars please, this can be resolved constructively. My edit on the Taylor Swift page has nothing to do with the problem. I just wanted to clear some puffery there. It's a fact that the top is too long. Mirrored7 (talk) 13:33, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

@Mirrored7: Ok and? There’s already two users who disagree with your editing, BawinV and I. You’re the one edit warring and your edit summaries make no sense. Also, your edits to Taylor Swift are part of the problem. You’re doing the same thing that you do to the Ariana Grande page. Please stop your disruptive editing. Doggy54321 (talk) 14:05, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
The problem with you is simple. You're a biased Ariana Grande fan. And you engaged in WP:POINT by editing on Taylor Swift articles with edit summaries that literally make no sense. Define "puffery" please? Unlike AG, TS is a featured article. There's no place for puffery and fancruft on the article. You also failed to explain what's the "puffery" in the article. Next, you're yet to answer me why TS's lead is "long" when AG's lead, which you obsessively defend, is much longer than TS's? BawinV (talk) 14:28, 3 October 2020 (UTC)

Notice of noticeboard discussion

There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. The thread is Disable MDanielsBot. Thank you. Sorry I forgot to notify you earlier. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 13:57, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

No problem. Thanks for the note. Begoon 14:01, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Notice of ping

Hi Begoon, you have been mentioned at User_talk:DuncanHill#Not_ignoring_you,_sorry. As you have last edited 3 days ago, I assume that a ping does not necessarily reach you quickly enough; a talk page notification may. At least that's what it would be in my situation, as I have enabled emails for talk page messages, but disabled them for pings.

It's probably too early for seasonal greetings; unless there is objection to receiving them, I'd like to return here later for these. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:29, 21 December 2021 (UTC)

And while I'm at it, I'd like to clarify that, without any irony or attempt to condescend, I believe, and have really agreed all the time, that the AIV report has described an actual problem. I tried to phrase this as "having merit" back then, which was a silly language mistake, as the idiom "having some merit" is probably usually used in an ironic or negative fashion. I have used smileys way more often back then, and friendly words, too liberally, in situations where I intended to express a genuine smile yet probably came across as ironic. I interpret your last ":)" to me as coming with an slight irony that I genuinely did not intend to express back then. The "Please, Begoon" line was a serious one, yet it condescended, such as by judging someone more experienced with content creation than me as an editor.
And no, there was no grudge. There really was no grudge. I genuinely didn't even think of the situations you had referred to.
There's a grudge at the moment though, or perhaps until now; it was created by a misinterpretation of my words and actions that I seemed to have no chance to explain. It was created by the ANI discussion and your words describing others when leaving, which had left me with a "Good riddance" feeling. All I personally am probably looking for is an acknowledgement that we have been misunderstanding each other. Mine is here.
I may travel to Wikimania one day, and I'd be happy if I could notify you in advance and meet you there. I have issues expressing and reading feelings though text, at least in some cases including this one. I believe that a classical/normal/nonCOVID/offline conversation could resolve the last doubt that any grudge from me to you didn't exist before the ANI discussion that accused me of having one. And perhaps it is resolved here on this talk page today.
Best regards,
~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:47, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
PS: Here's a Quarry query for block reasons containing the text "ignoring community concerns" on the English Wikipedia: https://quarry.wmcloud.org/query/60802 – I had added it to my standard repertoire as a result of your criticism, and nearly all of these blocks were made in response to AIV reports that, strictly speaking, could have been declined with a message pointing the reporter to ANI. I have also manually moved multiple reports to ANI instead of telling people to do so, after noticing that telling the reporter to do so themselves usually makes them feel trapped in a bureaucratic mess of institutions. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:00, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
As I said at ANI, if, as a result of our interactions, you have found ways to improve, then that's a positive thing, which I encourage. It's never easy to put spilled milk back in bottles but you can, at least, try to avoid kicking over any more, encourage others to be more careful, and see if you can do anything to mitigate the damage from other spillages. Begoon 22:21, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
I don't have email set up for any notifications. Pinging me is generally enough, I read wikipedia logged in (for personal gadgets/CSS etc) at least every few days. As you've discovered, I also may notice mentions without a ping - they seem less polite to me though, particularly when attempting to use me as an example on high-profile noticeboards...
I'm not particularly interested in a general chit-chat, though. You're probably a lovely person in real life but as far as wikipedia goes I only have our interactions to go on, and they have been relentlessly negative. I'm not going to hash it all out with you again - you've shown you are perfectly capable of finding the old discussions by linking to them, so I'll leave you to reflect on how I ended up with such a poor impression of an admin who said, in the discussion you linked: "It may seem strange to you, but I was honestly unaware of our previous interactions each time I declined one of your reports" (there was, as you are aware, more than "declining reports" involved) There are, as I see it, two possibilities - firstly that you were telling the truth and were unaware that you took at least three actions within a short period of time that would piss off the same editor (that's very poor situational awareness for an admin and something that you should urgently address, in my opinion, before you end up in a similar position with others) - the other possibility is that it was not the whole truth.
As I also mentioned at ANI you weren't the only (or even main) person to get under my skin at that time - merely a straw the weight of which happened to break this camel's back, at least for a while. It was unusual for me, because I usually don't give much of a shit about the idiotic, incompetent or malicious actions taken on wikipedia when I am the only 'victim' - such things are so common that I could never have been here for so long if I did. The upside to it all is that it did make me see how much time and effort I was basically wasting here, and I truly haven't missed that at all.
I suppose what I'm saying is basically thanks for stopping by but I don't really expect this to be the start of a beautiful friendship, under the circumstances.
If you want to take something positive away from it I guess I could tell you that I was initially inclined to just remove from my talk page without comment a section from you entitled "Notice of ping" as sarcastically disingenuous but didn't, because I judged that you probably didn't intend it that way, and didn't consider that it could be thus perceived. That's probably understandable, given that you've obviously been knocked out of your comfort zone a bit by having your linking of the two people you did without notification at ANI objected to by both parties. We live, we learn. Begoon 22:15, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
I also note that you added everything including and after "And while I'm at it" while I was composing the above reply (I got no e/c warning). There's not really anything I want to add to what I said above (and I replied to your "separate" post.) Begoon 22:32, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
In response to the second paragraph, I swear that is the truth, and that's what made the situation so weird to me. Yes, I forget usernames, or I perhaps don't care enough about who made a report when processing it. Of course, there are exceptions such as fancy signatures that unavoidably catch my eye, I guess. This may also well have changed since the ANI discussion of 2019. I really don't know. I have no way to measure this, nor would I have expected it to be a problem before it became one, at least once, with a loud bang.
In response to the rest, yeah. I didn't expect nor seek friendship; I was hoping to be in a situation where I could finally credibly re-iterate that "honestly unaware" was an honest statement, to finally resolve that misunderstanding. I see how our interactions have led to the current situation. Sorry again. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:42, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
Ok, well if it makes you feel any better it would be churlish of me not to accept your assertion that you were "honestly unaware". Not to do so would equate to accusing you of dishonesty, and I don't want to do that.
I'm a very direct kind of person, in general, and there are occasions, of which this is probably one, where I could perhaps have been more moderate and even more considerate in my tone.
My advice though, and that's all it is, is to aspire to being "more aware" that actions you take will not necessarily be viewed in isolation by all concerned.
Thanks again for stopping by. Begoon 23:19, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
